dear friends, i have an iphone 4 here that has just been updated to ios5, i don't know which version it is. and the problem is, it's an us set. use gevey sim. now i can't even pass the activation part. what should i do, i'm a total noob. reading the thread does'nt get me anywhere.

No, you use Gevey Sim to unlock the iPhone so that it can be used with local carrier.
And if you had upgraded to iOS thru iTunes, you probably had already update the Baseband to 04.11.08 as well, which is not supported by current Gevey Sim.
Baseband cannot be downgraded.

First, iOS 5.0 signing window is closed; so if you're not currently on iOS 5.0, then you have no way to go to 5.0 anymore.
Second, the jailbreak for iOS 5.0 & 5.0.1 is still tethered for now, only exception is the old bootrom 3Gs.
Jailbreakers had warned that if you want untethered for 5.0 (they're working hard on it), you should just stay at 5.0, don't upgrade to 5.0.1 (it's not downgrade-able).

now i'm at 4.2.1(like u said cant go to 5.0 that is from iTUNES or from custom ipsw iclarified?) BUT if i use custom ipsw from iclarified & using tinyumbrella to sign for me? possible to update to 5.0?

Miscellaneous

1) There is no jailbreak (yet) for A5 processor devices (iPad2 & iPhone 4S). It is being worked on. It will be released when it is complete, and tested.

2) There is no untethered jailbreak for iOS5 yet (except for old bootrom 3GS which will always be untethered when Redsn0w is used)

3) Ultrasn0w is not (yet) compatible with 5.0.1

4) There is no software or hardware unlock for baseband 4.11.xx.
There is no method to downgrade a baseband.
Software unlocks are probably a thing of the past, seven new basebands have come and gone without any exploits to software unlock them. If you require an unlock buy a FUL phone or a used phone which can be unlocked (Hint: Do some research first, many used phones are sold at cheap prices because they CANNOT be unlocked. Buying one without knowing it can be unlocked is a waste of your time & money)

5) Flashing the iPad baseband to newer 3GS phones may kill the cellular radio rendering the phone worthless forever.

6) It is too late to upgrade to 5.0. Apple closed the window

7) Hashes do not work for iOS5. If you have 4.x.x hashes, you can still downgrade the firmware (not the baseband). Make sure your host file is pointing to Cydia.

8) There is no way to downgrade, get rid of or fix the GPS issues with the iPad baseband. Just like the warnings said, it is forever. If a method should be found to remove it, we will announce it. There is no reason to keep asking post after post.

9) If you want to try jailbreaking but have no idea what you are doing: iClarified.com has tutorials, read the blogposts at the top of each page and read some posts asking about problems similar to your issue.

wtf... like tat i missed the chance of upgrading to 5.0 & maybe a possible untethered la? dam like tat i need to go 5.0.1 tethered...

1 more thing.. if i update to 5.0.1 my old bootrom is forever will stay OLD right?

you can always do a manual update by pointing to 5.0 ipsw

so now i want to jailbreak my ios 5.0.1, what should i do? i've got redsnow 0.9.9b8 which is the latest software but then when i downloaded the IPSW which is for 5.0.1, redsnow says it does not recognize it... i'm stuck now... plz help! =(

you cannot either automatically or manually update for iOS5 anymore and the server blobs wont work

if MOD is here i would like to suggest to pin up a tered about current jailbreaking status in order to have less new tered asking about downgrade or jailbreaking the new iOS.

although i would gladly help new users sometimes its better they read themselves rather than being spoon fed
