GUIDELINES TO MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL ETIQUETTE

FROM VARIOUS SOURCES IN RELATION TO SHARED TRAILS AND NON BIKE SPECIFIC TRAILS

PERSONAL SAFETY
-Wear a brain bucket(yes..that's a helmet) whenever you ride
-Do not travel into remote areas without informing others
-Ride within your capabilities.Ensure that if you want to push your limits, you buddies are around to support you.
-Know your bike and bring the necessary/essential spares.

RIGHT OF WAY IN RELATION TO OTHERS(NON RIDERS)
-Give way to non motorised trail users, i.e. hikers, horse riders, because people judge all cyclist by my actions
-Give way to motorised trail users, ie. motor cross bikes etc, because generally we will end up worse off in an accident.
-Alert others when approaching.Get a bell, or "Excuse me" works quite well

RIGHT OF WAY IN RELATION TO OTHER RIDERS
-Riders have the right of way.If you are pushing your bike, leave the riding line open for others to go past.
-Rider up hill has the right of way.
-Allow faster riders to past

SPEED
-Approach turns and bends in aniticipation that there's someone there
-Make your presence known when approaching someone or any turns

IMPACT ON THE TRAIL
-Leave the wildlife and fauna alone.Magic mushrooms are bad for you.
-Stay on designated trails and avoid destroying vegetation if possible.
-Dont't take short cuts over /around technical sections. If you can't ride it,walk it.
-Learn how to use your front brakes so that you minimise skidding your rear wheel. If you refuse to learn, then ride only in bike parks where people are afraid to maintain the trails.
-Do not litter.Take out whatever you take in.
Practise minimal impact riding, take only photos and memories with you

FUN
-You are to have loads of fun, talk lots of cogs, and make good friends on your ride.
-Develop sense of humor. Some people say it's good for the soul.

hi bro, thanks for the advice.
is it ok if use "normal power" running tap water on hubs and other places which have grease inside???
and is it ok to use car detergent on the whole bike?

tap water for whole body is enuf; soap is no point.

The only chaindrive part need to brush off the soil+lube and relube.

but if wan change bike, start to blast it with waterjet.

Morning all ....

Helmet Replacement Policy : FAIL

Yesterday I went to Specialized to ask them about this.... they said they dont have it here...and mentioned that the policy varies from country to country...
Saying if they have that policy the helmet will be more expensive ...(but a check online shows they re not)

I actually dont buy it....they just dont want to give out the 50% discount...I wonder if I should email Specialized about it...

One would think its a win2 policy because logically one will only use the helmet for 2 years without replacing..if one crashes and needs a new helmet Specialized will be able to maintain that customer ..cause of giving 50% to replace the helmet

I ve bought a Flux helmet to replace but had they given me the 50% I would have got a Specialized...maybe even the SWorks helmet...

is there such thing as helmet replacement policy ah bro? even the carbon D3 1.8k LTD helmet also if koyak - padan muka kthkbai. unless factory defect. but if factory defect then you fall - thn you die. so tak guna also nak claim warranty.

like last week a fellow DH-er fell in BR and his helmet pecah, darah keluar like mud brown colour from his nose, bit thru his tongue, bibir koyak and all but cannot claim helmet replacement. helmet pun 1 week old. if factory defect sure dah die.

got some companies that offer discount on helmets when your helmet is broken in a certain time period. not about claiming warranty, but about retaining customers. i think road helmets a few brands have this policy (not in malaysia) cos a fall on the road will usually break the helmets.

I got this online:

"Helmet crash replacement Policy
If a helmet is damaged during a crash within 2 years after the purchase date, the
Specialized dealer will replace this helmet for 50% of the original purchase price.
Therefore, the dealer needs an original proof of purchase and the damaged helmet."

Like Radsmazel said...its more about retaining customer ....eventhough I Specialized kaki...this leaves a sore point la ...

I tot it is better to pecah helmet than pecah kepala? huh.gif

If fall so hard, confirm pecah helmet. I think the warranty covers things like if your strap suddenly putus out of nowhere, or the buckle is loose, or foam inside helmet stinks, etc. Stuff like that.

Helmets are design to break or crack. When they break or crack, it is to absorb the impact of the fall.

Yup ...Helmets are meant to break/crack on hard impact..in order to protect the head it will crack ....its inevitable

The policy is not a form of warranty but serves as a customer retention and to encourage people to use helmet for safety...

Rather than allow the person to choose other brands (which might be better etc) ...the policy will have retain the customer... and in return the customer saves...after all most fall are accidental...win win la...

But like dickybird said ....this is Malaysia...taking care of customer etc is not important ...you can be treated like that ...

The policy is there... Malaysian bosses think they so great.
So, they don't give.

Just like do you know that you can return anything you bought to whatever place you bought from within 30 days and they should refund money to you regardless what notice they put there big big? That is Malaysia's consumer rights. But try go and argue with any shop on this... Sure kana diao kao kao...

Greetings lads.

Total noob here determined to start biking as a form of exercise. As age catches up, the knees are showing signs of wear and football/futsal has to take a back sear.

After shopping here n there, I've set my sights on the Raleigh MMIX Race. The shop guy says that a hardtail is a good start and upgrade to FS later. (Fits within the 2k budget as well)

My question is, would it be better to start of with a FS to avoid the "upgrade bug" later?

I would start of mainly on flat roads, get the hang of the bike before moving on to trails (if ever).

Am looking for advice before I splurge on the bike. Any Specialized bikes that you guys would recommend?

Appreciate the comments and advice. Thanks.

Another cheaper solution is to get whatever bike you have, then...

1. Always ride alone
2. Never mix around with riders
3. Disconnect your internet at home
4. Only use your working hours for work, no surfing
5. Plan your driving route to avoid all bike shops at all cost

how old are you? if your still in the 20s then no need. you still have strong legs. do you know the feeling when cheap bike overtaking uncles with expensive bikes in a race?? no money can buy, priceless.  thumbup.gif

get this bike. bikeradar got positive review on this one.

fox is easier to maintain, and setting. it's THE std.
most rider whom tried both will also prefer char of fox.
dont waste time and $ on others.

most bike shop prefer promote RS cause it's main disto is not here so it's open market where as fox is under KS Spore, they have shop in dsara and Bikepro is also their main local shop.

Ello everyone! I've stopped biking for about, 11 years now, recently I've an itch to pick up this hobby again.

Am in the budget to get a XC Hardtail with a RM2k budget - My eyes are currently set on GT's Avalanhe 3.0. Any comments?

Or would there be an equivalent recommendation from well let's say, Kona, Giant, or other brands? Hope to recieve some advise from you guys here.

There is three places to service fox: bikepro, khcycle and ag suspension. no need special tool unless your damper is shot..Any other fork is a compromise..,

lol. fanboys. if get top end shock i doubt you would be disappointed. got alot of highly rated forks from RS, DT Swiss, Fox, X fusion on bikeradar.

even got 1 rider very happy with his tora laugh.gif

admittedly i'm using a crappy fork, but i would get an RS 2nd hand since the 2nd hand value is cheaper than fox. laugh.gif

Smart because they know how to spend the right amount of cash for a brand new branded and usable fork? Epicon is just another Fox (Kashima-coated) fork wannabe, it's a good fork but it's just the type of fork where you can forget it after a ride.

The only thing not good about it is if you don't use gloves, it becomes slippery. icon_rolleyes.gif

That's Danny Hart's Glory. Since his victory recently, Giant promotes heavily on their Maestro link technology. Like how Trek does with their EVO one-piece-design link.

Anyway, I saw one local rider just joyriding with his bike with full-face on. thumbup.gif

Fell in love with slopestyle! My friend had a Specialized P1, hardtail DJ bike. I always switch bikes with him whenever we ride. I did my first barspin and tailwhip, seriously. Landed on my shoulder for the first few tries of the whip.

I always watch Brandon Semenuk's video, and most mountain biking movies have those discipline so it helps.

Those tricks are not that smooth for me, but overall I'm really happy that I did it. What's a good bike to start with, any idea?

Added on September 24, 2011, 9:44 pmFor the barspin is pretty explanatory and for the tailwhip, once you in the air just kick the frame to the side. From there on, it's all arms.

kaizer, he got the full bike.

From my understanding, if I were to do tricks and stuff, I might as well get FR bike because most FR bikes have shorter travel and smaller geometry frame. I can still shred in trails.

If I get the DJ bike, it's just another BMX frame with 26" rims fitted. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Added on September 24, 2011, 11:55 pmBy the way, is it possible to fit in 2 x 10 drivetrain in an 8-speed RD?

FR and Slopestyle different mah rite? Slopestyle bike are round 4~5" slack angles travel bikes while FR is more like DH territory?

I would love to get the P1 frame. Short chainstay with ISCG tabs. Sweeeeet! thumbup.gif

For DH is more to the speed and controlling... for the FR is more slightly like DH but it ride with a style... like trick stuff..

For the DJ, before you get in to the FR u need to practice how to ride with a style first rite.... smile.gif

DJ are pretty much like that. Just you don't feel like the bike too small like BMX.

I recommend get a slopestyle bike then if you wanna go on trails as well.

Freeride travel 7incher. Heavy

Dirtjump bike travel 3-4 incher only. And suspension usually hard. Frame super light but strong.

Kurt Sorge rides Giant Faith in Slopestyle events. But most of them lowered their front to 140-160.

Guys, any LBS have hydraulic gyro cables? I'm planning to remove my front derailleur and the gear shifter that operates the 3x10 chainrings since the T-Bolt have weird noise issue when shifting it. Plus I don't really use that much. I'm gonna drag the gear shifters to the lower part of the frame where the bottle is placed. Just like how Semenuk and McCaul did it. The only gyros are the brakes. What do you say? Any advice?

Sounds crazy right, hehe. I'm gonna treat it as a freeride bike. Most LBS in my area doesn't have much option for a DJ bike and that's a setback.

Any idea on how much is the full price? I'm currently looking into NS Bikes, their Holy and Majesty hardtail DJ is perfect. I've decided to go back to hardtail and use single chainrings and maybe 100mm FOX Float fork. Sweet!

You mean KH Cycle is selling the Scott Voltage? That's a great deal. That's what I'm trying to pull off here, been trying to push my T-Bolt as a FR bike and that's the maximum line it'll cross. Pushing as a DJ bike is just not it.

By the way, this is Cam McCaul's Trek Ticket. The price cost an arm and a leg again, probably more than that.

I see. Anyway, Banshee Amp, Giant STP, NS Majesty/Holy/, and Specialized P1/P2/P3 are in the choice list. Will look into my LBS to have more information if I can order. Perhaps only frame as I have most of the components. I might need a smaller sprocket for the single chain rings.

Added on September 26, 2011, 3:36 amCyphereza, you're so right. Scott Voltage is the one that I'm looking for, medium fat-looking body frame is the perfect DJ bike. Most DJ bike have small and thin-looking frame, makes it looks cheap.

Knee Pain

Guys recently I ve felt pain on my knees after riding, just want to know is there something wrong with my set up? Is my seatpost too high or too low?

I do have problems with my knees but never felt any pain after rides before.

I ve heard using clipless will minimize the pain...but I tak berani lagi pakai clipless

Try playing with the saddle's fore, aft and height. Even small changes has effect on it. Also cranking a too hard of a gear too long will have problems.

Try those knee wraps in sporting goods store, it might help too.

Too low also will cause.
Anyway, if you already have the knee problem, with strenuous exercise like biking can inflict more damage to it.

Most docs will ask you to rest for few months.
For me, I take glucosamine to counter it. He! He! And it works for me.

hehehe at the moment. my aim is to get fit first. so my plan is to cycle around my housing area making loops mainly on the road not off road. have been asking around, meeting people but still confused but majority said get mtb.

at first was considering a roadbike, but many said, have to go for distance to enjoy the ride plus the tyre very sensitive and prone to puncture.

so please advice.

If I were to remove the FD on my bike and only depend on the gears shifting, anything I should keep in mind? Some word on the net is that when you shift to gear 1-3, your chain will switch rings. Does bash guard come in handy on this situation?

That little piece eh, hmm. Some bike setups are with it with the FD and some without. IIANM, it's supposed to keep the chain only on the chosen ring right?

Thule is wwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyy much better than BnB.

About Thule (taken from website):
The Thule Brand

The Thule brand was established in Sweden in 1942. Thule is a premium brand used globally for a wide assortment of products with a focus on solving the problem of how to bring equipment with you when using a car (roof racks, bike and water sport carriers, roof boxes). There are also other product areas such as accessories for recreational vehicles, trailers for active life (horses, boats, etc), snow chains and luggage.

Thule is the largest brand in the Thule Group.

With its origins in Sweden, Thule is now a truly global brand

In 1942, Thule was founded by the Thulin family, when Erik Thulin, a true lover of the outdoors, put the Thule name on a Pike Trap that he designed and began selling to the fisherman of Scandinavia. It wasn’t long before he added other practical things to his company’s portfolio. Business boomed, gaining profitably year after year.

By the 1960s, the company began to concentrate its business on car-related products, and before long the first roof rack was born. New product categories were added in the 1970s and new markets were opened worldwide (e.g. US, Japan).

The Thulin family sold Thule to the publicly listed company Eldon in 1979. It continued to grow both organically and through acquisitions (trailers and rooftop box manufacturing), and Thule has been in growth mode ever since. New markets have been opened, product categories have been launched and several companies have joined.

In 2004, the Thule Group acquired Italian snow chain manufacturer König. An ensuing close collaboration resulted in a series of Thule branded snow chains for passenger cars. A year later, in 2005, RV Accessories company Omnistor was added to the Thule Group portfolio and integrated with Thule.

By acquiring towing systems company Brink in 2006, Thule Group added yet another product range to its portfolio. This integration has resulted in a series of towbars and bike carrier solutions.

Since 2007, Case Logic has been part of Thule Group. As a consequence of the collaboration between Thule and business area Carry Solutions, a range of Thule branded luggage, bags and cases was launched in 2010.

About BnB (taken from website):
BN’B Rack is designed by a team of experienced engineers who enjoy spending most of their time in outdoor life – cycling, kayaking, canoeing, skiing, fishing, and camping. Our racks are customized to carry and protect your gears and precious cargo. Ultimately, your interior space is maximized for your family and pets. With our ingenious design, we will surely make your trip more convenient, safe, and exciting.

Have you bought the downhill bike?

Post the picture for us to 'cuci mata'

I rode the bike (Trance) to Bukit Cerakah recently. Really enjoy it. Thanks.

I also rode it around Shah Alam, but becoz I was not experience in riding bicycle/motorcycle, it was really dangerous. It seems that I have to stop road riding at busy streets.

Another thing is that I dont understand the adjustment of the fork. On the right there are two types of adjustments, the blue lever and the red button. How to use them?

Went to my local bike shop today, surprisingly the Specialized P2 is so heavy for a DJ bike. However, the components are solid. Running Avid brakes and SRAM groupset. Just change to hydraulic cables and you're good to go.

Btw, anyone wanna let go their FOX fork box or more? I'm willing to pay ya. biggrin.gif

I didn't use the roof type. I'm using the rear bike rack type. If not mistaken should be 986. Looks "cool" with the rear rack but the bike look out of shape, thus spend RM120 for bicycle adaptor... sad.gif

Reason why U didn't choose the roof is because my bike too heavy... Now feeling little regret as with roof, at least no need to worry kena curi.

My rear brakes are having issues, the lever is usually hard when I pull it but on this one it just soften until the grips. Might be cable or calipers issue?

I didn't use the roof type. I'm using the rear bike rack type. If not mistaken should be 986. Looks "cool" with the rear rack but the bike look out of shape, thus spend RM120 for bicycle adaptor... sad.gif

Reason why U didn't choose the roof is because my bike too heavy... Now feeling little regret as with roof, at least no need to worry kena curi.

shimano is easiest to used for nub. main key is it 'click' so u know it's engage and if you fall the clipless will disengage.

CB is bling-er and lightest (for eggbeater) but if fall, it wont disengage. you will become like transformer transforming..
