got some companies that offer discount on helmets when your helmet is broken in a certain time period. not about claiming warranty, but about retaining customers. i think road helmets a few brands have this policy (not in malaysia) cos a fall on the road will usually break the helmets.

I bought MET helmet because BikoPro boss ciakap..

"If you fall, and cracked your helmet, you can get 2nd unit for 50% off".

I think, diff distributors, will have diff local policy...

QUOTE(Draken @ Sep 14 2011, 07:21 PM)
Greetings lads.

Total noob here determined to start biking as a form of exercise. As age catches up, the knees are showing signs of wear and football/futsal has to take a back sear.

After shopping here n there, I've set my sights on the Raleigh MMIX Race. The shop guy says that a hardtail is a good start and upgrade to FS later. (Fits within the 2k budget as well)

My question is, would it be better to start of with a FS to avoid the "upgrade bug" later?

I would start of mainly on flat roads, get the hang of the bike before moving on to trails (if ever).

Am looking for advice before I splurge on the bike. Any Specialized bikes that you guys would recommend?

Appreciate the comments and advice. Thanks.

if you want to get an FS and want to avoid the upgrade bug, your budget has to be at least RM12k. laugh.gif

for hardtails it would be rm7k (at least for me la)

lol. fanboys. if get top end shock i doubt you would be disappointed. got alot of highly rated forks from RS, DT Swiss, Fox, X fusion on bikeradar.

even got 1 rider very happy with his tora laugh.gif

admittedly i'm using a crappy fork, but i would get an RS 2nd hand since the 2nd hand value is cheaper than fox. laugh.gif

just need a folder for point a to b commute. 1.5k is probably max. so far only see the polygons, urbano 4.0 but only nexus 3 spd hub, scared cannot climb the hill on the route.
plan to pimp it out like Sniper's Giant Halfway, proper bar, 2.0 slicks and maybe a tiagra RD and rcoket saddle! walao wei! sure over budget already!
*
what proper bar? commuting must use proper road bike handlebar.

How many "teeth" found on those let say 27 speed bikes? the smallers and biggest ring. (the cogset)

for rear cassette a typical range is 11-32 or 11-34. 10 speed 11-36

tbolt is actually an ok frame. carbon fibre, 3.5kg for such an old frame is decent.

it can do most things ok except for pedaling laugh.gif laugh.gif tongue.gif

and yes, i've used one before. never ever ever stand up and pedal on a tbolt. 1 time stand up it sucks up your life force laugh.gif

32 FLOAT  100 FIT RLC
32 831  100 FIT RLC

i'm guessing the damping and rebound different. 831 is for DJ, so the rebound should be much slower. dunno lol tongue.gif

Guys,

Why do bikes like Banshees, OnOne, Van Nicholas dont get the same exposure/bandwidth to the likes of Giant, Trek, Scott, Specialized?

Am sure they re just as good (if not better) but you ll hardly see them on trail or magazines...
*
economics of scale. trek, scott and specialized produce much more bikes compared to boutique brands, and have more money for marketing. obscure brands dont have such a wide range, not all shops will bring in cos low quantity shipping not as cheap. thats y not many shops carry yeti, banshee, ibis, intense and other brands.

its a cycle: more volume+more products>more sales>more money>more marketing & r&d & sponsoring pros>more volume+more products>more sales.

thats y scott, specialized, merida, cannondale, giant and all mainstream brands every year each model is updated.

buy santa cruz chameleon ppl dont really care what year, only got 2 types, 1st gen and 2nd gen. 2nd gen got eccentric bottom bracket, can run single speed.

i used salomon trail running shoes for mtb, after 1 year the outsole disintegrated. feel like crying. b4 mtb the shoes lasted 5 years, damn durable. if i buy salomon i will use for trail running and posing, too expensive for mtb. hahaha
