As far as I'm concern, the game has evolved quite a bit and being a typical English no. 9, strong, tall, good header of a ball and a good finisher may not be as good to watch these days.
I'm not convinced that Andy Carroll has lost his touch, looking at his goal in the League Cup, it was still powerful and accurate, it's just that strikers these days are required to do so much more, the same goes to wingers, fullbacks, midfielders even central defenders are expected to make plays.
Carragher's playing may be accepted in Liverpool and in England, but if you look at Cannavaro, Nesta, Maldini, Lucio, Puyol, Thuram, etc. Most of them peak after the turn of the 21st century. You don't see them hoofing the ball as much as English defenders do. Instead, they make plays from the back. That's besides the point.
Carroll under Hughton, I must admit, I did not pay much attention to Newcastle Utd, but according to my brother who is a huge Newcastle Utd fan, their tactics were mainly long hoofing balls to Carroll and he has never played as deep as compared to our playing methods. What I noticed is that King Kenny preferred Luis Suarez further up front rather than Andy Carroll. Perhaps, utilizing him as a target man? And playing Andy Carroll on the flank rather than a better dribble, crosser Luis Suarez after Charlie Adam's red card was also debatable, arguably, I would say that Suarez is definitely a player with better vision and Carroll definitely has stronger shooting legs and height to take crosses. Perhaps those are also reasons why Carroll is struggling.
Playing a lefty on the right is never wrong imo, as in, a player who knows how to cut in ALA Gerrard, Messi, Ronaldo, Young. But for a lefty who we signed mainly because of his crosses, I'm not too sure about that, Downing isn't really a player who cuts in, the fact that he has got a very good cross baffles me even more. But who am I to judge? Perhaps King Kenny wants Stewart Downing to shoot even more?
I don't think Jordan Henderson is as bad as some of you guys think, yes he can be a tad bit slow when it comes to making plays, but isn't Barcelona the same? They don't really play with a high tempo, you hardly see them making good counter attacks, they often play the ball among each other, sometimes with no purpose, but that's football ain't it? They usually have 2-3 players around them to enable short passes, Henderson's position is pretty similar to Lucas, both are very mobile players who has no one to accommodate them. Charlie Adam prefers to hit long killer passes rather than playing it simple, hence no place for Henderson to contribute offensively. And I see him also as another connector of our defenders and midfielders, not exactly a flashy player, a reliable simple player, it's just that his price tag gave us high expectations.
*note, I'm not a big Adam, Henderson or Carroll fan.
My thoughts exactly.
