Hey Melbournian, just thought of surveying around good place (or safe place) to live in Melbourne. Please share your experience? I am planning to move out soon from my current place.

I have just started working here like 4 mths back, somehow I enjoy my new life here. The whole city is still new to me, so full of surprise everyday. smile.gif I have also met a few malaysians here who have been working here for the past 10 years (including 4 years studying). Most of them intend to go back to Malaysia in the near future. It is kind of a big surprise to me. Nevertheless, grass is always greener on the other side.

It actually depends on where you want to live and what you want to do as each suburb is practically different. But generally the eastern suburbs are relatively safe.

Well, if you're single, yes, you'll feel lonely everyday. Same situation like me 10 years ago.
But, after i'm working in KL for 10 years, my life was miserable as Malaysia economy performance very bad, inflation and the worst houses and cars need to be loan more than 5 years.
I've been working stressfully for 10 years.
If you intend to come back here, you MUST start your own business / family business. Malaysia is a SME country. Our worker union is weak.
If not, you better stay back.

i have a gf here and living together for more than 3 years. and of course i wish can start my own business or get a higher position in a company if i go back for good but no one can guarantee that.

i'm in the IT industry and is start to dying here in australia. outsource and the cloud computing will take over the jobs.

but the worst case for me is i'm not even a PR here. visa expire next year and the only chance to get PR is to look for work sponsorship

Except for WA, we're the highest paid workers around. Freshies easily get 100k. Even for my cushy office job I'm paid around the same.

IT is a dying industry so if you're into computers, this isn't the place for it.

But if you have engineering, hands on technical skills, geological skills among others, its easy money. Most of us get 200 dollars a day bonus for call out. Free phone and internet. Free makan.

If you're on a FIFO rotation, even better better. You'll easily do 30 to 50 percent more than most people. If you're into the next big thing, which is unconventional resources and are qualified, just pit companies against one another, they'll pay.

Oil/Gas, Mining services and the related whatnot.

I was paid 80 as a freshie.

Now add 100 bucks a day (200 once you're done with grad program) for field bonus and say you're given a 15/15 roster. That's 98k easy. Not inclusive of other allowances.

Heya, currently an undergrad student at Uni of Adelaide majoring in Biotech with a little experience in food technology. Just looking for some opinions, are my chances to obtain a full time work in the food tech industry after graduation okay?

don't be picky is the main thing to remember once you graduated. i've been doing that for a month choosing the job that i want(nearest location, company and a position that require higher experience) but it won't work that way. then i just don't care and go for any jobs that were advertised and BAM, got one finally.

yes. going to look for another job as a move on or possible work sponsorship. it's easy to land for the interview once you got your first job with experience but still not easy to get a job.

Hi guys,

I've currently got an employer in Sydney interested to take me there (sponsored work visa).

But I've got a lot of concerns regarding tax, rent, basically will I be able to survive with the salary package given. (80k including allowances and super.)

Assuming after taxes, I have around 4.5k disposable cash, how much is the minimum I need to survive and still be able to save? thanks

If you rent a 1 bedroom apartment, it costs about 400aud (per week)? I suppose 4.5K should be enough if you are single. You should be able to save if you spend cautiously. Living expense in Sydney is the highest in AU. Working in Sydney will be interesting, it will be like another 'KL' city, though I have not worked in Sydney before.

Dear malaysian in melbourne, where is the best place to count down? tongue.gif

My ideal place is somewhere nearby Alberk Park or South Melbourne, so that I can go to the MSAC stadium anytime that I want. I am a bit picky, prefer to live in a house with a garden, which I think it is a bit hard to find in those area. I don't mind sharing. The current place that I live is 7km away from the city. Hence it is a bit hassle for me to travel especially after a late night sport session. I am happy to live in the current place, in fact I am living with an aussie landlord. The experience is terrific. Tough decision, to move or to stay.

Oh, but I won't be alone, I'm bringing my fiance along. The office is not at CBD though, 30km away. Suburb I suppose?

I was in sydney before. Which suburb are you allocate to? At least i could recommend you some of the places.
I think you should stay near to your workplace, which around 10km radius.
Since you're saying the workplace is a suburb, i think you can get yourself a car which is very cheap there.
Sydney is like KL, sometimes there's traffic everywhere (of course not as serious as KL).

http://www.realestate.com.au will give you an idea of how much you'll pay for rent depending on where you are.

http://www.coles.com.au/Shop-Online.aspx will give you an idea of what you need to pay for groceries etc.

http://www.131500.com.au/ is Sydney's public transport info to find out monthly pass prices, how long it takes to go from your work to home etc.

Sydney is expensive, do a bit of homework because only you know what you spend every month and what you consider to be a minimum.
