If you want to work as an electronics engineer you've come at the wrong time. Because our national design and manufacturing is in the shitter.

The most lucrative electronics work is for defence contracts and they only hire citizens. Automotive is crap because the government has pulled back all subsidies, the last car manufacturer in Australia, Toyota is aiming for a 2016 pull out. Plus electronics jobs are a lot more prevalent in Sydney.

Move to Sydney instead. Or even better, join us hardhat wearing bastids in the gas fields, good money while it lasts. Somemore can surf LYN while working laugh.gif

Holden is closing their plant in Geelong. Ford is closing shifting their platform to Thailand. Toyota pull out 2016. Well, we're buying all imported cars soon. Bye bye to local Ozzie made cars. doh.gif
However, heard that the car price will drop a little....hopefully

Well, market is pretty quiet lately. Even my company housing sales drop with the housing price hiking like nobody business.

Why choose Melb?

I've not really made a full decision yet just that Melbourne seems like a nice place to try out at. A good mix of art, urban and nature. Truth is, the first place I considered when I first contemplated moving to Australia is Melbourne, because I actually got a reply from there for a job offer. Needless to say I didn't get it because I was overseas.

Manufacturing for cars is out but I believe maintenance for them will never die out? That's the automotive side I was thinking about though I realize I won't make a good living from that.

Any good places for giving birth?

Guess its advisable to getting another qualification as I step into Australia.

Why not? It's not like this business is based off rocket science wat. If you have a degree and enough experience, they'll hire you.

Well to maintain a car and work as an automotive electrician or any other form of automotive tech you need a Cert III, to get a cert III requires you finish a 3 year apprenticeship, which is crap because they pay apprentices about 12 dollars an hour. To open your own business you need a Cert III to apply for a license anyway.

I generally know because I did an electrician's apprenticeship while working as an engineer under my employer's sponsorship. Remember that many jobs here are "regulated" by the states and their laws.

I'd hold back on getting any potentially "unrecognised" qualifications and just jump in with savings, hope for the best and tough out the first 2 years. That's how we all start out.

I reckon that you have to do deep research on where to settle down. Of course you won't want to settle down in Hobart based on your profession. You'll freeze and starve till death.
Anyway, the bigger city give a better opportunity to work but living expenses is mad.
If you wanna settle down, think whichever the best for your job prospects. Good luck

Not a good time to immigrate to Australia especially to SYD/MEL. Plenty of professionals looking for jobs.

Unless you're aiming for CPEng or RPEQ status it isn't really required in industry.

Well, my friend, you just pin point the actual situation! haha
My job now is for angmoh is very stress and dealing with numbers. However, after been thru 14 years in KL really paid off. Sometimes it's like bushfire but consider small fire. Not like KL we're really working in 'forest fire'!
Anyway, I would say for new migrants really need to jump into those jobs which no angmoh wanna do. Get experience at least a year then jump.  smile.gif

I feel it was the other way around for me, maybe because I'm in the Risk area.. rclxub.gif
