No, I've been to Australia a few times and have friends there so I've been looking for jobs that way. I'm trying to be a bit clever though, having a local aussie address (tumpang a friend) and an aussie number that forwards to my mobile in KL.

But I'm still here in KL. Can't beat going to work at 830 and leaving at 5pm with decent benefits and a very nice boss. What will make me leave? Primarily money/career advancement so if I do get that high paying job I might just quit KL and move.

Ic..hope you can get what you want soon! smile.gif

Either Sydney or Melbourne, hopefully the new list will be updated soon, I think I will have to re-apply for the visa to go through. Let me know if you need any help!

It really depends on the bosses as well, not all bosses are nice and not all places you can leave at 5pm. I know that construction field does not leave sharp at 5pm and have to OT quite often.

I guess people have to understand that although the currency is high, cost of living is high as well. Unless you're getting 6 digits yearly then I can say that you're getting a high paying job in Australia, otherwise its a big NO.
*
Are you in construction field and working in Aus now? Is that hard to get a job for your field?

Any 6 digits consider getting a high paying job in Aus? Even with 100k yearly in Sydney?

Very true, the cost of living in Sydney for example is significantly higher than say New York or Los Angeles which is why I'm aiming for $200k or more. Sadly it doesn't seem so easy to find jobs at that level, not by just applying online. It'll take time and lots of networking. Or I pickup a trade and do what empire23 suggested biggrin.gif Or I continue staying in KL...

Yes, I think living expenses in Sydney is really high especially when I look at the accommodation and public transport is not cheap. That's why I was confused..

The median salary in Australia in general is $70k. Go do a google search and see how much you can afford with $100k in Sydney. Everything is relative.

If you want to finish work on the dot, there's no place like oil and gas. Working the field for more than your allowed time is grounds for dismissal due to safety laugh.gif

In my old workplace I used to do 8 to 3 lol. Days off were whenever you bloody wanted em. Most times the boss would say fark it, we won't take it out of your annual.

But of course your home you go home to is a small room in camp though tongue.gif

100k is pretty good if you're single in Sydney. Generally you're looking at 75k take home and with that you can get a 500k house on loan, of course you'd be shooting about 3 grand a month but hey it's an investment.

You're working for an engineering consulting firm right? Thiess? Monadelphous? Aecom? How's the work like? Do they pay more if you have CPEng?

Erm, I am working for an operator and I felt that my department is very technical. Partly because the company is planning to move most of the jobs in-house rather than contracting out.

Nah, don't think so. But if you meant for consultants then I guess yes.

what is your idea of weekly expenses?

Cost of living is high but many people exaggerate. Personally I feel that Malaysia can be characterized by low income (on average), expensive to own urban housing, but affordable or relatively cheap goods, whereas food in Australia is cheap though housing is expensive. When someone has lived and worked in Australia and Malaysia, he/she can compare the income level, expenses, overall quality of life, working hours and attitudes etc. One-sided or second-hand accounts are not reliable.

I particularly enjoy the culture where I can go out for a coffee in the morning and afternoon, and nip to the gym in the afternoon, and have some flexibility with my work hours.

That said, overall I work longer hours as I'm still responding to emails etc when I'm outside the office. It's not an issue though as I have controls over my time so it's not stressful, even if I have to do that.

It's one aspect of Australia that I really enjoy compared to UK.

This thread really motivates me to move over to OZ. Having a legitimate VISA myself, I think i will move myself over on the beginning of 2015. However, what worries me most is my VISA which expires in Sep 2015. With 9 months of VISA Validity, not sure what am I employable or not assuming I am there at January 2015.

How's the IT market right now?

Not as rich as offshorers or blackfaces laugh.gif

Depending on camp it is sometimes good and sometimes bad. But after 21 to 25 days straight work without rest days, some people begin to lose it. I guess that's what the hazard pay and flexibility is for lol.

But if you're OnG office in the city, everyone is flexible and generally doesn't give much of shit about anything. Unless some idiot let his IVMS or token go off.

Yeah, employers tend to be less rigid in the engineering business. Not sure about other industries though.

I'm not sure if "ultra sampah" is a real term, but I figure it is at that level for generalist IT.

If you're very specialized IT with good certifications, the market is pretty ok.

that's nice to know

if I responded to emails outside of the office, I would hardly count that as work - though in my role/type of work, much of it needs to be done on a computer in an office, it's not possible to accomplish much with only email

also I think in Malaysia if you respond to emails outside the office no one really appreciates it that much... in Australia maybe people realise that answering emails is still working and you don't have to live in an office 24/7 - varies by type of job of course

It is not tiao geh la and I didnt kao beh kao bu, just a bit lost because it is a bit too sudden..because when the hiring manager asked me if I am interested to work in Aus, I thought to just give it a try and accepted the interview because I thought I would fail and won't get the job offer, that's why I am still a bit unbelievable when I got it  smile.gif

u have nothing to lose moving to aus really, even if you end up dont like it u can always come back and say that u had overseas work experience and the exposure of working in a different country... it will definitely look good on your resume
