since artificial plants doesnt have any roots, maybe you should tie them with rock first before buried them into sand.
tetras would be good idea if you want schooling fishes. cory does dig hoses and uproot plants.
small golden plecos will clean green spot algae that grow on glass. i dont think they will go for harder algae such as BBA or hair algae etc.

Thanks for the quick reply. Most if not all the plants I bought are already fitted with weights so I think that's not much of a problem. What IS a problem is that I use the sand to cover up the fishing weights I used on my 'tree branches as per the picture below. Incidentally I bought an Ikea spotlight to make a more natural sunlight look. However, I'm worried that it might get too hot and overheat. And are submerged lights gonna be a problem? Been toying with the idea a bit.

My 3feet and 2feet aquarium is fully automated system. Lol.
Complete with solenoid, electrical timer, automatic food timer. I can leave home for about 10days without worry about it at all.
Unfortunately, problem is nobody help me to trim rotala, my tank will evolve into jungle whenever i go trip.
I only need to find someone to help top up water once every 3days only. hehehhe

heh, i got timer too. but no food timer. >_< well... for a week, so far i never had a fish died starving at least so far. the only thing is, POTASSIUM!!!!!!!!!!!! heh, i dont know but usually i just leave my tank just like that since no one gonna take care of it anyway and so far nothing been wrong so far even without potassium (shorter photoperiod). i dun have any problem to topup water also since my water evaporation rate is damn slow unlike using fan. just, afraid of algae if it occured anytime during my absence and when i came back... walla!! algae took over the tank already (crossfingers.. so far never happened)

wah..!!! shocking.gif 29C? u not using fan but not using chiller? im using chiller and keep my temperature around 23-25. above 25 is consider 'hot' for me already for my tanks. LOL!!.. i wont ever let it go beyond that. average temperature around 24C for my tank.

eh btw bro, can tell me ur rotala is which type of rotala? full name? or pic would tell...

I feed my shrimps once a week or sometimes twice a week. It is protein based food that will induce breeding. Basically from 4 shrimps to over hundreds. Fire shrimps will eat algae but occasionally require protein. In the wild, they got it from eating dead fishes and so on.

Contradict to what people may believe, captive fishes usually die because of over feeding which pollute the water faster than bacteria can process.

I will not worry much if you are not going to be around for few days. Just let it be and your fishes will be fine especially in planted tank.

Please take note not to put too much food in the auto feeder. I would suggest putting 50% of the food amount that you will feed for x days. You obviously do not want auto feeder to fail and start dropping all the food into your tank. Test it a couple of time just to ensure everything is working in proper order.

- looks like water flea to me. i have those too sometimes in a matured tank ... but they usually stay at the bottom area and hardly visible. i usually leave them because it never got serious like snails.
- this might comes if your gravel dirty with fish poos which those fellas survives for it. most tank have this but usually it's hardly visible because they're in the gravel or sand unless ur tank is overpopulated with it.
- u cant totally remove them 100% tho, but to minimize it, make a big waterchange often and vacuum ur gravel as much as u can in between foreground plants leaf.
- fishes would use them as 'alternate' food source but they would ignore them if already being fed nicely. starve ur fish and they'll dig over these pest. hehehe...

You can leave the shrimps without feeding for over a week but not fishes.

I am using various shrimp food..given them variety as I am testing out the product

Current brand/product i am using for:-
Fish
BW Staple S (day to day food for my fishes - Rainbow threadfin, Galaxy Rasboras, Pygmy Cory and Pseudomugil getrudae )
BW Pro Color - crush and feed together with Staple S from time to time (maybe once a week or twice if i can remember)
ADA AP-2 (sometimes just feed for fun cause it is quite old. Bought it like 1-2 yrs back)

Shrimp
BW Grow
BW Color
BW Spinach
CRS Haven protein food (CRS Haven is one of the LFS in Singapore and they market their own shrimp food).
Mosura Specialty CRS food (previously i keep CRS)
Mosura Excel (previously i keep CRS)
I feed very little and mix among the brand. My pygmy and fishes will nip on the food too especially Pygmy Cory and Oto.

I know it is a little crazy to have so many food but I think we need to give a little variety.

Wait till you keep marine fish..more food rclxub.gif

My previous 5ft shirmps population went crazy..from initial 10 fire red to hundreds. Possibly 300-500?

Protein base food will help to make them breed. They wont thrive if you only rely on algae in the tank.

I also keep some high grade CRS previously so that explain the premium food. Basically your fish/shrimp stay healthy for a longer period and free of disease. Like I said, the food can last you very long so the price is quite alright actually. If you can afford expensive fish, food is nothing. Frequency of you buying again is very low. I haven't even finish mine despite a year of using it. I guess it will expire instead of finish.

You can look out for other seller ie Sisaiko and Petsmart88 if you want to get it. I am currently trying out G Series product.

don't worry they won't die one. I've left my RCS shrimp tank for longer periods and never saw any deterioration.

Last time left my tank for 2 months, started leaking after 1 month away, had to switch off filter cause the water was lower then the inlet. And my housemate that switched off the filter switch off the lights also because its in the same extension. So 1 month no filter and no lights, come back still got half the population of shrimps left cool2.gif
