Sifus,

I just checkout my hedgehog and there is spikes everywhere.

He is not really botak and i can't find any mites.

So i think its quilling period for him.

Is there anything i should take more caution??

Thanks!

check some of your hog's quills. see if it still has the follicle on it, if there isnt, it's a tell-tale sign of mites. sigh of relief otherwise :)

then your hog's just quilling x)

try giving it an oatmeal bath, drying it then applying some ointment. he'd be comfortable enough to sleep for 20 hours a day i assure you, with minimal to no scratching at all :P

He is still new to me and i try not to bath him yet as the old owner get him to bath b4 i bring him home.

As he is quilling now i plan to but i'm scared that might stress him out.

By the way he is not scratching and everything.

He just seem fine with his sleep all day and eats well.

This is my girl..

Name - Cottie
Age - 2 months +
Color - Snowflake SNP
Got her from leonhooi
Loves - exploring, jumping down a cliff (have to stop her from doing that all the time) and rolling her toilet roll on poop
Dislikes - ppl waking her up, she will hiss and become spiky

Attached Image

Lately, Cottie has been biting me many times. She showed signs that she wants to come out from the cage when she wakes up, I put my hand beside her, she put her pawns on my hand, and sniff and BITE. It's not like she is cranky or bad-tempered, so I'm afraid she may be using bite as her way in getting things done.

Any ways to keep her from biting? I tried blowing air into her nose everytime she bites, she would let go but now my hand has 2 punctured holes and bled a little after trying to stop her from biting.

no! by wail i mean, okay i know what i said but what i really meant is try to get her attention by showing that you're really hurting xD

while a gush of the wind to the face might be more of "let go, now" a soft wail might be more of "you hurt me ;-; how could you!". i remember reading how an owner did that before and the hog stopped biting altogether :P

Hmm I'll try my best becoz she tends to sink her teeth into my finger and pull hard several times before letting go. @_@

When yr hedgehog bite u, dont pull your hand away as this can cause more injury. I have been bitten several times but not more than 10 times and the biting never cause bleeding.

Several tips to avoid biting, avoid put your hand or finger at her face when she is not in good mood. Make sure your hand is clean and odourless/ perfumeless. When she start sniff your hand, quickly put your hand away as biting is imminent after sniffing and licking or without licking. I always call my hedgie name to wake him up as he dont like to be disturbed while sleeping. Just be patient, I also had the same problem, maybe he was in bad mood last month because of quilling process.

Now after i bathed him last two days he become more calm. The last time i was bitten was last 2 days during the time i dried him with towel after i bath him first time.

My Hedgehog now can sleep on my lap while i watch tv but i must hold him with my hand or close him with my shirt. rclxm9.gif

Hey folks,

New hedgie owner......got a cute little girl named Mika from Leon. About 7weeks old, cinnamon colouring.

So far so good, shes been quite friendly and curious. Enjoys sniffing my hand but I'm trying not to let her lick (shes already bitten me once to see how tasty I am). So far she has not balled up on me. Just the usual furrowing of the head when I place my hand close to her nose.

A little wetness on the nose, drinks quite a bit but does not eat much yet. Hope she grows up big and strong...

A video of her sleeping

Cottie chasing my hand while I'm cleaning her cage

This is what I meant when she bites me. If I stop moving my hand at one spot, she will definitely chomp on me.
Of course I was only cleaning the cage.. she is very cute but snappy too ^^;

*today I stopped my hand awhile and I can feel her mouth opening so I managed to pull my hand away before she does it.
I should probably sacrifice my hands tomorrow and let her bite on it then I'll try to advise her to let go @_@ rclxub.gif

Some more pics of her smile.gif
