This is my girl..

Name - Cottie
Age - 2 months +
Color - Snowflake SNP
Got her from leonhooi
Loves - exploring, jumping down a cliff (have to stop her from doing that all the time) and rolling her toilet roll on poop
Dislikes - ppl waking her up, she will hiss and become spiky

Attached Image

Lately, Cottie has been biting me many times. She showed signs that she wants to come out from the cage when she wakes up, I put my hand beside her, she put her pawns on my hand, and sniff and BITE. It's not like she is cranky or bad-tempered, so I'm afraid she may be using bite as her way in getting things done.

Any ways to keep her from biting? I tried blowing air into her nose everytime she bites, she would let go but now my hand has 2 punctured holes and bled a little after trying to stop her from biting.

does she annoint herself after biting you? try faking a soul shattering wail the next time she does that. some hogs responds quite well to.. a certain level of human animation afaik tongue.gif

no! by wail i mean, okay i know what i said but what i really meant is try to get her attention by showing that you're really hurting xD

while a gush of the wind to the face might be more of "let go, now" a soft wail might be more of "you hurt me ;-; how could you!". i remember reading how an owner did that before and the hog stopped biting altogether tongue.gif
*
Hmm I'll try my best becoz she tends to sink her teeth into my finger and pull hard several times before letting go. @_@

A video of her sleeping

Cottie chasing my hand while I'm cleaning her cage

This is what I meant when she bites me. If I stop moving my hand at one spot, she will definitely chomp on me.
Of course I was only cleaning the cage.. she is very cute but snappy too ^^;

*today I stopped my hand awhile and I can feel her mouth opening so I managed to pull my hand away before she does it.
I should probably sacrifice my hands tomorrow and let her bite on it then I'll try to advise her to let go @_@ rclxub.gif

Some more pics of her smile.gif

I see all your hedgehog i so jealous! My hibari so antisocial. She still huffs whenever i approach her.. or make sudden movement
*
My Cottie's like that too... she's always huffing puffing when I try to take her out after she wakes up, startles easily, but once she is carried up and handled awhile she becomes okay and active.
I did give a piece of shirt with my scent too ^^;

Hey all, i'm kinda interested in having a hedgehog as a pet after seeing wilsonjay's post in kopitiam. but i've got 1 question, are hedgehogs sensitive to loud sounds? Coz i'm a music lover and i usually turn on the music quite loud.
*
I think if they get used to it , it should be fine. My house can get a little noisy at times with shouting, walking up stairs, running or movie sounds, so my hedgie definitely needs to get used to the surounding sounds, at first she does get startled easily, after 1-2 weeks, she is kinda used to it, and can even sleep when my mom is talking loudly around or someone runs past.

Just bring back the hedgehog (they may protest just by seeing the images online), eventually they may grew to love your hoggie too, just like my mom did smile.gif

Today Cottie gave me the shock of my life. It was lunch time and I brought along some dragonfruit, bengkuang and her favourite capsicum.

I gave her small bits of dragonfruit and bengkuang for her, after a few bites she began to act weirdly like vomit act or trying to get something out of her mouth. Didn't seem like she is choking as she can still walk around calmly, so I suspected it could be bengkuang stuck on the roof of her mouth (according to hedgie forums).

So I tried to place her down with her back on my lap and open her mouth but she kept struggling to get up. I can see that she was very uncomfortable and she kept trying to dig it out with her paw for half an hour but to no avail. I thought of inserting my finger into her mouth but was also thinking of her teeth sinking into them.

1 hour passed and I thought that I need to sacrifice my baby finger to free her from the suffering. Then I saw the piece of capsicum which was long, thin and solid enough to insert into her mouth. So I held her still and insert the vege inside her and boy did she clamp on it hard. With a few more tries I managed to shove the bengkuang piece off the roof and .. Yay! She returned to normal, swallowed the bengkuang, chomp down on her saviour capsicum and kept eating as usual ^^

Thanks for reading this far.. XD

wow it bleeds....but u were saying not pain?
lucky my Rosie attempt to bite me was foiled when i swiftly pull my hands away the other day right before her teeth sinked into my palm...she was sniffing, licking and about to bite as i felt here teeth slip on my skin....  sweat.gif

Ok about this,, I have sort of a weird and bad experience in this.. I was cleaning cottie's cage and she came to me and sniff my fingers, when I see her open her mouth to bite, I wanted to avoid by pulling my hand away, but she got me first.. And together I yank my hand with her biting on me and she FLEW to the side and hit the wall of the cage.. but she is fone nevertheless. I hope T.T

I feel sad for myself as an owner..

you really shouldn't pull away when they're attempting to bite you, it'll hurt them more doing so >_<
*
You misunderstood me. I always try not to let them bite by pulling my hand away, this time I pulled my hand 0.2 secs too late and she got me first, and at the same time I pulled my hand away, thus it happened. So it was sort of an accident sad.gif

I'm thinking of gettin superworm for my girl, read online that you'll need to chop off the worms' heads before feeding to your hoggie to avoid its biting. Any owner doing that? Do share what did u used to cut it off... Of course I am talking about live ones.. Not canned. Thank you! smile.gif

@nanadeadbeat: your hedgie is so very cute! I wished mine can stay still too ^^;
@ix3rukia: got it, but it just kept me wondering that the hedgie forums out there do say that the worm bit them, could the 'foreign' worms be different than our 'local' superworms tongue.gif
