I haven't watched it yet. LOL.  But Martin Scorsese's film is always on my list. Some commercial pieces are pretty good, eg. The goodfella, Casino, Cape Fear, raging bull.  While his style is unique, what brought me more to his film was his cinematography and editing.  I do enjoy those minor details from his film.  The only one film I do think he'd better avoid in future would be 'The Age of Innocence'.

His editor Thelma Schoonmaker did a lot of good for most of this stuff.  So I can't wait to watch his latest offering. I think I will post up a minor review once I did.

sure, he is one of the most recognized directors, like ford coppola, david lynch and chris Nolan. however, I know there is a good chance I will not like their works too much. my bets are more with steven spielberg, james cameron, ridley scott, quentin tarantino n current hotshot jj abrams. these, I never miss. biggrin.gif

this 140min movie is based on nelson mandela's autobiography. neither as grand as the last emperor 1987 nor as impressive as gandhi 1982, mandela long walk to freedom is highly watchable with a fine performance by idris elba (of prometheus, pacific rim, thor 1/2...).

one of the last century's highest profile world political figures, it's good to know a bit more about the man esp his views on democracy, violence, race and race hatred - something we can relate to very well here.

this one... either u like it or dislike it.

3 hrs long, filled will soft porn, drugs and foul language. but is also comical and funny of the hangover genre.

while i thought dicarprio and jonah hill put on a fine performance, this movie will not stay in memory for long.

3/5.

Just finish watching it. Predictable ending. Poor excuse for soft porn. Some parts like the drug snorting scenes were a little overbearing I thought.

But I thought DiCaprio was very charismatic in his role and played it convincingly.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Broke into two days to finish the film. Despite the length I think for a film which was intended to be a mini epic of the life of a ruthless stock broker, such length is necessary. No doubt there are lots of soft porn, unnecessary drug taking scenes, foul language in every minutes perhaps. If taken into context I also enjoy some of the dialogues that were essentials to build the character of the main actor/actresses.

However, I have to say that Martin Scorsese can do it better than this. His typical narration style of story flow does serve its purpose. Which is very similar to his good old '... as far as I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster.' right in the beginning of his well acclaimed 'Goodfella'. Somehow, Wolf is not as good as his previous film. I do have a feeling that he may just want to make this film out of fulfillment of his obligation, rather than out of his passion of film making.

DiCaprio acted well, but not dis-similar to his recent film eg. Django, Aviator etc. He is eccentric right here in this film, just like any others. He should win praise for his role here, without which this film will lose his soul. I love some of the script here. But loath lots of foul languages. I do have a cousin who works in a financial district of London, but I don't think I want to facebook message him to watch this film, unlike the earlier Margin Call.

The best part of this film is still the amazing editing skill of Thelma Schoonmaker, who managed to paste up lots of split seconds clips that is very typical of Martin fast paced story flows.

Overall I think this film is rated only 3/5, with warning to all about its raw nature of the story depictions. I don't think being raw is just pure commercials, but its typical of martin scorsese. However, its a wee bit too much.

An excellent Martin Scorsese style short commercial, with 60's music & cinematography.

47 ronin is a big budget movie but was a financial failure. rotten tomatoes gave it 1/5.

i found it quite good. keeanu reeves' performance is non-stellar but his training in matrix and taichi master by martial artistes like yuen wo-ping probably came in handy although that did not come out much in the show, which could have been a factor in its appeal to the mass audience. on the other hand, i thought the attention to details were meticulously genuine - incl the brush and ink, samurai armor, katanas, banners, murals, seppupu ritual, etc. perhaps if the show did not involve witchy foxen and evil dragons, it would have been better received.

beside reeves, there is Hiroyuki Sanada and Hiroyuki Tagawa - both well known japanese faces in hollywood. plus Tadanobu Asano (genghis khan in mongol). note there are no chinese or koreans faking as japanese in this show!

a serious stab at japanese culture, bushido and myth, imo. 3.5/5. strongly recommended.

Firestorm 風暴 (2013)

Gosh, I am currently consistently surprise by stuff that is coming out from Hong Kong.

Another good movie from Hong Kong and the ending is... surprising!!!

If you like Cops and robbers movies, give this a go.

There are some faults in the script (eg. alot of good characters have too little to do...and have to add overall, not bad)

And oh, for the Home Theater lovers out there, you want Sense Surround, THIS MOVIE GIVES YOU SENSE SURROUND (Dolby TrueHD).

I humbly submit, my two sen.

CAT. 8 (2013)

A quick show of hands here, who wants to watch a science fiction mini series, that is filled with bad science!!

How bad you ask?

The science is SO bad and full of holes, you can shoot a Tsar Bomb (The largest Thermal Nuclear Bomb made by man. It is equivalent to about 1,350–1,570 times the combined power of the bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki) through it!!

Not possible.

Let me give you several samples

Shame on Matthew Modine for being the lead here...

I sat through this so you don't have to.

AVOID THIS LIKE THE PLAGUE...

You've been warned kiddies... YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!!

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) Addendum

The imagery of the movie IS FLAWLESS.

Though I have to admit, the addition of Legolas is a little.... clunky (he was not in the original The Hobbit book.)

For my original review, please goto:
