Hi capoi & Mickey C

Here is my review

Cloud Atlas (2012)

Okay, am watching the last few minutes of Cloud Atlas.

I can understand now why this wasn't shown in Malaysia. Heck, I'll be very surprise if may of the America view actually got this!! (Short attention span and all)

There is NO WAY the theme of the movie with pass the censorship board!!

There a 6 (that is right SIX stories in this movie) that interleaves each other.

They all happened in different time period.

The connecting element is a music piece named Atlas Cloud.

There is so many A List actors in this and they all play multiple characters in this it is no simple task keeping score!

End Credits and my verdict, I have to give this another go to get all the pieces into place!!

In short, no expense was spare in making this movie.

There is enough story her for AT LEAST 3 movies!!

There are some scenes which is EXTREMELY violent in this movie.

There are some subject matter which is taboo.

My Two Sen
*
like and agree with yr comments.

cloud atlas.... first 30min, i struggled with it, wondering what it's all about. after that, totally engrossed, total 3hrs.

watching it a second time, will take time to watch 1hr-1hr-1hr. i see more, find more meaning.

cloud atlas may be a failure at the box office esp local ones but i say it is one of the best movies made in the last few years. a real piece of art.

warning: this movie appeals most to those who believe in or hv an open mind about the meaning of karma.

i m much of mov freak like u!

i watch and keep all kinds of dvd-bluray-1080p - from casablanca and the longest day to pulp fiction and stargate to three kingdoms and water margin to rurouni kenshin and ghost in the shell. believe me, i still have some vhs and vcds! biggrin.gif

anyway, recent good ones for me were: killing them softly and cloud atlas.

slightly older ones, i'll say prometheus, fast5, battleship and rise of the planet of the apes.

my all time favorites, meaning those can watch again again - lord of the rings trilogy, matrix troligy, godfather trilogy, tom clancy series and jason bourne series.

i like to read this thread so that i dun miss any good stuff. so, thanks, guys! thumbup.gif

VHS? VCD?? Heck, you left out LaserDisc!! laugh.gif

I'm not familiar with rurouni kenshin, will have to check that out.

I'm surprise there are additional people out there who enjoyed Battleship (it is an indulgence of mine for 2012 also John Carter)

Believe it or not, I have never watch The Godfather... I know. I just never got around to it!! laugh.gif

Yes I re- watched alot of stuff, and with thing being release on HD... My Poor Wallet
*
ah yes... ld...i atually have a doxen of them in a box! biggrin.gif
rurouni keshin is a new samurai-ronin show. i like it as it is classic, good katana swordplay in contrast to those fanciful chinese ones.

japanese... if you liike anime and stories like matrix and terminator, you gotta watch ghost in the shell trilogy. these 3 shows must have given the holloywood guys quite some inspiration.

godfather trilogy is probably the best produced organized crime story, so get it some time!

if looking for yet more to watch, quentin tarrantino's stuff is awesome - reservoir dogs, from dusk to dawn, pulp fiction, kill bill, inglorious basterds.

one thing i find... old movie if watched again with home theater say just dts5.1, it's like a new show!! rclxms.gif

I will get around to The Godfather, I don't know why I keep putting that off.
The strange thing is I actually like The Untouchables...
Yes, with the new transfers a lot of old movies looks brand spanking new!!
Case in point, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962). Picture quality, very strong. Script is tight! I have not seen that movie before. I am always an Alfred Hitchcock fan, and have to add  Robert Aldrich was masterful in maintaining the suspense in that movie!!
And the ending, goodness gracious, what an ending!!
Tarantino has some good stuff. I like Inglorious Basterds, and Kill Bill 1 alot
Looking through Bluray.com they are releasing alot of remastered oldies this year!
GOOD!!
Bring em on, I say!! tongue.gif
*
untouchables is good too, but not in the godfather category...

wat happened to b jane... bette davis, before than liz taylor, i think. ok, will check that, tq!

about jap anime, hayao miyasaki made some very good stuff. do not write them off just becos they are anime. the themes are very strong and meaningful. cameron's avatar is supposedly inspired by princess monoke. if you had watched the borrowers 2011, it is actually based on miyasaki's secert world of arriety, an animation with walt disney. other good ones incl spirited away and ponyo.

still on jap anime, steven spielberg apparently bought the rights to ghost in the shell in 2008 to come up with a live action movie in 2011 but nothing happened yet. this one, i really look foward to!!

lastly, think you know philip d.ick - a syfy writer who became famous only after his death. excellent movies made with his books and short stories - blade runner, impostor, minority report, total recall (well, 2 of them!). screamers, paycheck, next and adjustment bureau are ok but not as good.

have fun!

One of the best Hong Kong movies recently with all the good actors in it.  I would personally rate it 9/10!  Will definitely get BD when it comes out with 7.1 sound track.

yes, this one is good. bd not out yet, i believe.

in the tradition of infernal affairs 無間道. from the ending, a sequel is guaranteed! thumbup.gif

Highlander (1986)

This is a cult classic.

Again, a decent blast from the past.

My Two Sen.

highlander was a major hit during its days. i actually like the sequel, highlander 2 better.

anyway, a remake will come in 2014!

On March 2008, Summit Entertainment announced that it had bought the film rights to the Highlander franchise and is remaking the 1986 original movie. Originally Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway were writing the script, but Summit Entertainment turned to Melissa Rosenberg to write it instead, with release scheduled for 2011.[32][33][34] In September 2009, Fast & Furious director Justin Lin was announced as director of the film,[35] while Neal H. Moritz was slated to co-produce. However in August, Lin dropped out of the film due to commitments to other projects.[36] 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo has signed on to direct the remake, replacing previous director Justin Lin. As of 2012, release had been pushed back to 2014. As of the middle of May of 2012, Ryan Reynolds was slated to play the titular character.[37]

of all "real" syfy movies, i like these 2 best - 2001 a space odyssey and 2010 odyssey 2. the bd versions are very good. old movies, but highly recommended for real syfy fans, not fantasy.

i am disappointed there are no plans to make films out of the other 2 books 2061 odyssey 3 and 3100 the final odyssey as author arthur c clarke is still alive...

ahh... this one... not the best kungfu flick but nice cny treat! biggrin.gif

i give my salute to rza who must have tried hard in understanding the 70-80s chinese wuxia psyche.

however, despite quentino tarrantino's endorsement, i see it significantly below tarrantino's kill bill presentation.

for one, gordon liu in iron fists did not come out as striking as in kill bill.

anyway, with chen kuantai, daniel wu and many others guest starring, i say it is quite a brilliant hollywood attempt.

i liken this movie john carpenter's 80's big trouble in little china, which was not bad, i say!!

will include this in my 1080p-bd collection. thumbup.gif

I don't think I can ever express, how BAD this movie is.

hehee.... but do give some credit for at least trying, a different flavor, a differernt slant. i think it is fine, even humurous at times!

someday, perhaps some chinese filmmakers should try doing a cowboy show. biggrin.gif

Skyfall (2012)
Revisited Skyfall, and have to add, it has THE BEST start sequence for the James Bond series.
Daniel Craig is becoming more craggy after each consequent movie (the irony, THE IRONY!!)
Picture and sound it amazing!
Movie is great.
Wish there are less of Q
The villain is... very unconventional James Bonds baddie!! biggrin.gif
If you are a James Bond/action movie fan, DO NOT MISS THIS!! biggrin.gif
My Two Sen

i like skyfall. i doubt it is an ian fleming story. not the usual villain wanting to dominate the world, but more like the usual diehard-jason bourne revenge stuff. maybe they're testing the market want to get out of the old bond box and make bond into a new kind of hero that will appeal to a new and bigger gen...?

it is obvious that judi dench has quit playing m and joseph fiennes will be m for future bond movies.

lastly, i suspect craig may have only 1 more chance to be bond, probably looking for a new young bond already.

this one is a disaster movie, about the phuket 2004 tsunami.

the film is not an action flick like roland emmerich's 2012 but a reallife drama about the tragedy and horror that fell a family on vacation. the emotional part is very well done, incl the depths of love, care and sacrifice for loved ones as well as others in a crisis.

yes, I quite like this one. but i think older viewers remembering the 1981 iran revolution and us hostages crisis will appreciate it better.

below is a good one. not the typical disaster movie but more of one that highlights the potential of the best in humankind. might bring a tear to yr eyes! a good job from japanese film makers.

the hobbit: an unexpected journey is 1 of 3 in the hobbit trilogy as a prequel to lord of the rings trilogy.
exellent, in the traditional of lotr as u can expect from peter jackson et al.
awesome scenaries, great action. but in this one, the valor of the elves is missing, except for flashes of elrond and galadriel in rivendell but compensated by a lot more dwarfs.

i would think fans of lotr trilogy will love this hobbit trilogy too. however, if u have not watched or read lotr, it will be much less interesting as it all ties back to a few common things in one long story - bilbao baggins, gandalf, gollum, the mines of moria, etc. nevertheless, enjoy!

if u like green zone and hurt locker, u'll like this 0dark30 from kathryn bigelow. quite a gripping tale of the hunt for ubl. not action packed as in black hawk down but a lot more drama and suspense. true event or not, who knows?

just watched lincoln, another steven spielberg directored production.

good. mysians should watch this - extraordinary people like lincoln, deng xiaoping and mikhail gorbachev giving all they got to change the world. if slavery wasn't abolished and women weren't given equal rights, what will the world be today? and well, we still have to see any such mysian leader will emerge. tongue.gif

daniel day-lewis as usual excels in the show, story about 150 years ago. sally field, tommy lee jones and david strathairn co-star.

most powerful in the movie:

"euclid (greek mathematician, 300bc) said and it's true - if they are equal to the same thing, then all of them are equal to each other."

"if you give negroes freedom, what next? their right to vote? then, women's right to vote?"

" i do not see all men created equal in this world but I say all men shall be equal before the law."

do think about it....

AT that time it was one of the few anti-war film available which was very realistic, but mainly focusing on the effect of war on American in general. I found the film was so so, but the haunting soundtrack by John Williams solo guitar kept me mesmerized for almost 20 years.
*
agree. after deer hunter, the next biggie was apocalypse now, which is excellent, one of my all time war favorites.

for usa, times change, always looking for the next "enemy"... after vietnam, it was all about the cold war with the ussr. great shows incl tom clancy's hunt for red october. even today, new tv series like "the americans" are still finding an audience.

next, came something else still alive today... ever since the events in iran depicted in the movie argo, usa finds a new target - "terrorists"- the global city bombings, kuwait, afghanistan, iraq, 911, etc.. of all the shows i have watched about this, i thought the best one is actually 1998's "siege" with denzel washington. it seemed to have prophesized things to come at that time.

anyway, forget jackie chan's chinese zodiac, poor. the last tycoon with chow yunfat and huang xiaoming is very watchable. director wong jing has come a long way!

I'm not sure if there are alot of Andrew Lloyd Webber fans out there, and have to add, if you are into ROCK concert, you might just like this.

i am into rock. biggrin.gif

i liked a few songs from this old album/play but never liked it that much. watched this latest superstar version, dun like it. it is not andrew lloyd webber at his best. if you do not know much about him, best to watch and enjoy the dts audio of phantom of the opera 2011 royal albert hall - excellent.

and i just bought this led zep concert at speedy for rm82 - pack of 1 bluray, 1 dvd, 2 cds. a classic that will not be repeated as the guys are too old to do it again!

the pianist is in same category as schindler's list but not as powerful. a good watch still.

django unchained is very watchable. much like inglorious basterds. christophe waltz is good, as good as he was as the colonel in inglorious basterds. still, i think tarantino has yet to make another as good as pulp fiction!
