Hi Guys,
Just got my HLB Classic, AmBank Gold and CIMB classic.
But dunno should i cancel HLB or not. Since what i know the benefit of HLB is only points and installment @ 6% which is relatively high.
Any advice should i keep HLB on top of the other two cards?
Thank you.
*
you got to detemine if the HLB card will reward you more than RM50 to cover GST.

2. Free Lifetime Annual Fee: Must, if possible, the RM 50 Tax too smile.gif
3. Card required for: Shopping, Dining and Groceries
4. Existing credit cards if any: nope (just started work for 6 months)
5. Preferred Bank or Considering CC from banks: any bank will do smile.gif
6. Others: NIL
7. Estimated Spending per month with the card: Less than RM1K
Btw, the min requirement for Maybank CC is Rm30k.. can i try?
*
Yah, MBB cards minimum income now is RM30K. Go try apply for the Maybankard 2 Gold Cards since you income close to the minimum. You would benefit most with the MBB 2 AMEX card for shopping, dining and groceries, that is if the place you patronize accept AMEX. Go to Places that Accept AMEX Thread to find out.

The best card for cash back for spending less than RM1k per month is OCBC Titanium MasterCard, however the annual income requirement is RM36K.

The problem is you pump at Petronas. If you pump at Esso or Shell, and for spending less than RM1K, Maybankard 2 Gold Card American Express the best with 5X TP and cash back 5% meeting your requirement for cash back and good points.

So if you still want to pump at Petronas, then look into CIMB Petronas card where you get 5% cash back on 1st of every month and 2% for the rest of the days in that month. However, please note, if you pump RM200 petrol only per month, the 2% cash back you get for the entire year is not even enough to cover RM50 GST.

My recommendation is to get Maybankard 2 Gold Card where you get 5% cash back on weekends for ANY TYPE OF TRANSACTIONS. Go to Maybankard 2 Card Thread to read more. And switch to ESSO if that is possible as you get additional 1.5% cash back from ESSO, please go read Petrol Thread to read more.

4. Existing credit cards if any: Citibank Gold
5. Preferred Bank or Considering CC from banks: Citibank, Maybank, Standard Chartered
6. Others: NIL
7. Estimated Spending per month with the card: RM2K - 3K
*
Your case OCBC Titanium for Petrol, Groceries and Utilities where you will get 5% cash back capped at RM50/mth. And if you spent RM10K with it, GST also waived.
Click here to read more about OCBC Titanium MasterCard. In this article, I also compare the benefits of different cards, i.e. OCBC TMC vs HLB, Citibank, etc.

Since you spend more than RM1K, another must have card to get is the Maybankard 2 Platinum American Express for weekend or once OCBC maximum cash back cap of RM50/month is reached.

Click here to read about Maybankard 2 Cards.. Read this article to see comparison between MBB 2 Cards vs OCBC Titanium MasterCard.

With above two cards, you can earn up to RM1200 cash back per year and that is not inclusive of the 5XTP you will earn from the Maybankard 2 Cards.

Citibank - well, you can read about their Platinum Cash Back Visa but annual fee not auto waiver.

Click here to read about Citibank Platinum Cash Back.. I did a brief comparison between Citibank Platinum Cash Back Visa versus Maybankard 2 American Express in this article.

Sorry, I don't know much about Islamic Cards. Moreover, my principle is not to pay a single sen of interest to the bank (i.e. work for the bank) - which should be the first rule for every card user.

1. Annual Income: Around 80k/year
2. Free Lifetime Annual Fee: Preferable, if
3. Card required for: Petrol (Pumping at ESSO, consider to try BHP soon) Cash Back/Rebate, Life Insurance Payment, Casual shopping, Dining (Heard some cards can get discount at San Francisco?), TGV movies
4. Existing credit cards if any: Hong Leong Essential
5. Preferred Bank or Considering CC from banks: Not really particular to bank though, as long as the benefit is good, I'm free to choose any of them
6. Estimated Spending per month with the card: Around RM1k to 2k.
*
If you like only spend RM1K per month, your HLB essential won't be earning you much. And therefore, like chemistry mentioned, get OCBC Titanium as you be getting 5% cash back for Petrol and Dinning.

As for San Francisco - you talking about Steak House or Coffee? If Steak House, CIMB cards do offer discount until end of the year. If you can switch from TGV to GSC, then with CIMB VISA cards you can get free tickets. Click here to read more about CIMB Promotions.. So, if you willing to go to GSC, then try apply for CIMB Visa Signature as you'll get more discount at San Francisco Steak House versus Platinum. Read previous post in this thread where I gave contact number for CIMB Credit Card centre at Sunway where they can issue Premium cards on the same day - call them up and ask about Visa Signature and tell them your HLB CL and annual income. Only set back is CIMB cards do not have cash back but you can redeem your points on the spot at KFC.

If you can only go to TGV, then Citibank Clear Card gives you free 1 for 1 ticket at weekends. click link to Citibank Promo below. Once again no cash back but you can redeem your points for ticket at TGV.
http://www.citibank.com.my/english/promo/tgv_promo_11.htm

Now you mentioned that you spend RM1 to RM2K, take away the insurance and petrol (check if your BHP accept AMEX, ESSO should) portion, if amount is still above RM1K per month, then look into getting Maybankard 2 cards too where the MBB 2 AMEX gives you 5% cash back on weekends and 5X Treats Points every single day. Go to Places that Accept AMEX Thread to see if you benefit from using AMEX.

Take away insurance + petrol, I might still able to meet the 1k mark. House utilities bill already gather most of the 1k quota.
*
Then you definitely need to get another card on Top of OCBC TMC as the cash back is capped at RM50/month or spending of RM1000 for 5% cash back (Petrol, Groceries, Utilities and Dining).

Insurance - HLB Essential (but you got to go work out if the returns is more than GST)
OCBC TMC - Petrol, Groceries, Dining and Utilities - 5% cash back better than HLB Essential where petrol you get nothing.
MBB 2 Amex - places that accept AMEX on weekends and get another 5% cash back. Even on weekdays, still get about 2.5% in returns.

Get MBB 2 if you can live without going to Petronas and spend your money on weekends. There are other cards that give cash back, please read previous posts but the returns will not beat MBB 2 AMEX.

1) Annual income: ~100k
2) Free lifetime annual fees: preferable
3) Card required for: Petrol (mainly shell), casual shopping, dinning
4) Existing credit cards if any: Maybankard visa wave, HSBC master gold
5) Preferred bank or considering CC from banks: none as long as can pay online. Lazy to go ATM / bank to pay tongue.gif
6) Estimated spending per month with the card: 1k
p/s: how's PBB platinum card?
*
1. Cancel MBB Visa Wave and change to Maybankard 2 Cards.
2. HSBC master gold for what? you spend RM10K just nice to offset GST, UNLESS you benefiting from the contest and you get discount with it at selected merchants. Goto HSBC Thread to check link I posted for merchant discount.
3. PBB, forget it, since you spending RM1K per month your returns from cash back negligible.
Best for RM1K spending either OCBC Titanium MastercArd or Maybankard 2 Cards.

1. Annual Income: RM60K-RM100K
2. Free Lifetime Annual Fee: A Must
3. Card required for: Mainly shopping and dining. And occasionally paying government bills. Interested in the benefits the card can provide (discounts, rebates, etc.)
4. Existing credit cards if any: MBF and Citibank Giant
5. Preferred Bank or Considering CC from banks: Interested in CIMB cause wanna use CIMBClicks sometimes.
6. Others: I don't want Maybank Cards
7. Estimated Spending per month with the card: Less than RM1K
*
For discount, that is tough as each card have it own benefits. Here is a list for you girl to read.
1. UOB Lady's Card - good for Coach bags and Hush Puppies shoes..
2. CIMB Card Promotion - Tai Thong group discount and Alexis Cakes smile.gif
3. HSBC - go to HSBC Thread and check out link for HSBC promotions/discounts at selected merchants.

But still, I would recommend OCBC Titanium (can replace your Citi Giant [??]) since it gives you 5% cash back at Giant, Carrefour and Tesco too. Click here to read about OCBC Titanum MasterCard.

And the best part about your post, you don't want MBB but you have MBF card sweat.gif Besides OCBC, MBB 2 AMEX card the best for spending less than RM1K/month as you only need to spend RM2,000 with MBB 2 AMEX and you'll get 10,000 points to offset GST or got offer Metro Jaya RM50 voucher for only 8000 points.

QUOTE(allenultra @ May 12 2011, 09:57 PM)
I'm paying quite a lot insurance/saving to HLA every year but to go work out if the return is more than GST? Care to enlighten me.
I'm paying like 10k a year into insurance.

Will apply OCBC TMC and MBB 2 Amex ASAP smile.gif
*
Well, for Essential, you get 1% cash back, therefore you would get RM100 from your RM10,000 insurance premiums. That means that you only earn RM50 after subtracting GST RM50 for that entire 1 year. But then again, certain months you may spend on something "big" you will still get 1% cash back. But believe me, once you have MBB 2 AMEX, you will use it more often as it gives you 5X TP or equivalent to 2.5% returns in term of vouchers (that is if you shop at places that accept AMEX - e.g. Air Asia accept AMEX)

The reason why I mentioned you paying insurance with HLB is because for the OCBC Titanium Case, Once you hit the RM50 cash back, you get nothing. So if your expenses for PEtrol, Utilities, Groceries and Dining comes out to be RM1,200/ month, you still only get RM50. The extra RM200 better charge to your Essential or better still your new MBB 2 Cards.

Now with the MBB 2 Cards, if you can plan in such a way you do your groceries and pump petrol on weekends to benefit the extra 5% cash back, then maybe your insurance can charge to OCBC Titanium. But complicated lah, got to keep track. So to make your life easy, Insurance charge to HLB. However, if your insurance is from Takaful, they accept AMEX.

Do you know any bank that offer discount if buying in NIKE? ;p

As for dining discount at specific outlets, well Starbucks you get free 1 for 1 coffee with MBB 2 AMEX smile.gif Pizza Hut is another. goto to MBB website to read more on offers and promotions.

what card you recommended? by the way,I don't own any car
*
For you case, none, since you not spending money with the card, why want pay GST and possible headache when your card is lost or cloned. As for Personal Loan, it is another subject, BUT just to let you know, the interest is damn high because they imposed interest like hire purchase (not reducing). Instead, get a credit card that allows you to make 0% interest installment.

starlight, please read previous post as many similar to your case. Annual income = gross income i.e. before deduction of EPF. If your gross income close to RM30K, go apply Maybankard 2 Gold Cards. Else for petrol you can consider UOB OneCard for BHP where it also gives you 2% for groceries.

For KLIA Lounge, unless you get the CIMB Visa Signature you get forget about free access to KLIA Lounge.

For spending less than RM1K, get OCBC Titanum MasterCard or Maybankard 2 Cards or both. But both also don't give you free entry to KLIA PPL. OCBC good for you monthly expenses but when you go overseas you may not earn anything from it except having the convenient of a credit card. Forget about OCBC Gold Card as the cash back is pathetic.

Click here to read my article on OCBC Titanium MasterCard. This article also have a table comparing the cash back with other cards like HLB Essential and Citibank Platinum Cash Back. Then at the end of this post, click the link to Maybankard 2 cards for comparison.

Most cards that grant you access to airport lounge DO NOT give free access to KLIA Plaza Premium Lounge. Accept for Alliance Bank Platinum Card but you won't be getting much in returns with RM1K spending. You may click here to read my article on Credit Card access to KLIA Plaza Premium Lounge.

Please also go to Petrol and Airport Lounge Thread - click here to Airport Lounge Thread. and click here to read more on pumping petrol with credit cards.

Citibank you get nothing for Petrol unless you get their Platinum Cash Back Annual Income Requirement RM48K and no free annual fee.

So your case - UOB Once Card or RHB Travel Money where you do get something for petrol. But I would think UOB Once Card better. However, I recommend that you apply for Maybankard 2 Card first and see how, if they reject your application, then only consider UOB.

The Maybankard 2 cards reward you with 5X Treats Points every day which works out to be approximately 2.5% when you redeem the points for vouchers. Can be more too. AND on weekends, it rewards you EXTRA 5% cash back. So total cash back comes out to be approximately 7.5% on weekends for petrol or anything else. Pump at ESSO, you get another 1.5% cash back from them giving you total of approximately 9% cash back for pumping petrol at ESSO. Go read Petrol Thread.

Go to Citibank website to check out places they offer discount for dining. Look into Citibank Clear Card where it does give FREE 1 for 1 drinks at Coffee Bean and movie tickets. Choice Card? I don't think you will benefit much from it with RM1K spending a month, maybe just enough to cover GST.

With RM1K/month spending, you should consider OCBC Titanium MasterCard.

2. Free Lifetime Annual Fee: A Must
3. Card required for: Petrol, Cash back only
4. Existing credit cards if any: Nil.
5. Preferred Bank or Considering CC from banks: Not sure
6. Others:  I will use my credit card mainly for petrol. I also love fine food, shopping and occasional movies in cinema. I also love internet shopping such as buying air ticket from AA or MAS.
7. Estimated Spending per month with the card: Less than RM1K
*
like alexwsk said, OCBC and or Maybankard 2 Cards.

However, if mainly for Petrol, OCBC Titanium MasterCard as you get 5% everyday at ALL petrol stations. Also you get 5% cash rebate for food everyday. Fine dining is subjective as it depends on where you go, if a particular restaurant you frequent often offer discount with a certain card, then go get that card. Also not all restaurants accept AMEX.

For AA and MAS, Maybankard 2 Cards reward you with 5X reward points which is equivalent to about 2.5% returns as compared to OCBC 1%.

So you you do spend like close to RM1K per month, then I suppose get both OCBC and MBB 2 cards. So on certain months yo do spend above RM1K, you will not loose out.
You see, with just spending of RM2K with MBB 2 Card, you will get 10,000 points to offset GST OR by spending RM1K on a weekends in a month, you also in ADDITION to 5X reward points you also earn RM50 which also offset RM50 GST. Also with MBB 2 cards, get the Platinum card and you will get Travel Insurance when you purchase your air ticket with it.

Furthermore, your existing card is a sub card, you should get a principal card yourself as next year they'll be sending you sms for every transactions. You don't want your principal card holder to receive an sms eveytime you use the sub card outstation, would you?

Hi Gen-X .. firstly thanks alot for your website, it's alot of reading. Makes me wonder you must be some hardcore banker or something? smile.gif However, I'm a newbie and I hope you don't mind explaining a few things to me

1) I don't really understand that. If I pay my monthly bill on time and in full, I don't get that charge at all right ? Is that for like the total amount you owe the bank or something ?

# Lifetime Fee Waiver with complimentary supplementary cards.
# 2 Credit Cards for a single GST of RM50 or shall we say RM25/each.

2) That means there is no yearly payment right ? So let's just say I get these 2 cards just for spares and I don't use it for like 5 years at all. I don't need to pay a single cent right? The GST is just the one time payment ?

3) Just to confirm, I don't need a savings/current account with Maybank to get these cards right ?

4) This is probably stupid but I just want to try my luck haha .. Can I get 1 visa and 1 mastercard instead of 1 AMEX and 1 master/visa ? tongue.gif

5) What's the deal with American Express ( AMEX stands for american experess right? ) ? People are saying that it's bad and no one wants it and everything ? All I know is that AMEX charge the shops more only right ? That's why they don't like to accept AMEX ? For us consumers, is there any disadvantages of using AMEX ?

6) Will the banks take your pay slip to make sure you have that much of income ? Or they just see then ok already ? I mean I don't feel safe giving out my pay slip, or it is supposed to be a very normal thing and I shouldn't worry about it ?=/

7) After doing some reading, I noticed there are different types even for the MAYBANKARD 2 CARDS ? Normal, gold and platinum ?? What's the difference ?

1) Always pay in full and you won't be imposed interest charges.
2) No annual fees for life but you got to pay annual government service tax RM50. But if you use the Maybankard 2 cards, you can use the Treats Points to offset the RM50 i.e. spend RM2000 x 5X Treats Points = 10,000 Treats Points. Use to 10,000 Treats points ro contra RM50 GST. And if you spend RM1,000 on weekends, you get EXTRA RM50 which would offset the annual GST.
3) No need any CASA with MBB.
4) Nope. Amex with Visa or MC.
5) Those who don't have AMEX cards are just not that smart or not living in Klang Valley, hahaha
6) Since you first time applying, you have to provide pay slip, Borang BE, or any official Income Tax documents.
7) Plat got Travel Insurance and Purchase Protection Insurance.

Firstly, your income now needs to be RM24K to be eligible for a Credit Card according to BNM new guideline. If your salary closr to RM30K, then apply for MBB 2. If your salary around RM24K, please read back previous post.

Firstly, what you meant by INSTANT Cash? Never withdraw cash with credit card unless you are freaking desperate.

For Cash Rebate AND Reward Points - you can choose either Alliance Platinum or Maybankard 2 Cards. Since you did not mentio0ned your expected expenses monthly, I guess MBB 2 Cards will do. And yah, apply for Plat as more benefits.

MBF provides Purchase Protection! - no idea what is this. Does the MBF Gaia benefit you with this? If so, go calculate how much you can earn with the MBF card.

Since I not sure what you using your credit card for, I cannot really recommend a card to you blush.gif But I can tell you that you can forget about Visa WAVE or MasterCard PayPass features because what do you actually benefit from it?
