This thread is for all to post and share how they benefit from their credit cards at petrol stations.

I usually pump at Esso/Mobil where I have their Smiles Card. For every Ringgit I pump at Esso/Mobil, I earn 1 Smiles Point and for every 1000 Smiles points I can redeem for RM15 petrol. That's equivalent to 1.5% cash back. The Esso Smiles Card is FREE, just walk into any Esso Petrol Station and fill up a form and you'll get the card on the spot.

With Maybankard 2 American Express, I will get 5X Treats Points points everyday at all Petrol Stations but Petronas generally don't accept Amex. The 5X TP is equivalent to about 2% cash back in terms of voucher. Therefore adding this 2% with Esso Smiles points, I'll get 3.5% cash back. So you can see that OCBC + Smiles Card combination is better on weekdays.

On weekends, Maybankard 2 Amex gives you 5X Treat Points plus 5% cash back. Add the Esso Smiles Points, you will get back 2% (with 5X TP) + 5% cash back (with Maybankard 2 Amex) + 1.5% cash back (in terms of Esso petrol with Smiles Points) = 8.5% cash back equivalent rclxm9.gif

Only set back with the Esso Smiles Points is that you only get points for fuel only unlike Bonus Link card where you can earn points at Shell when purchasing engine oil at the counter. Would appreciate those pumping at Shell with Bonus Link post and share how they benefit from the combination.

Cards that benefits you when you pump petrol.

Ambank Carz - 2% cash back at ALL petrol stations, monthly cap at RM20 for petrol (no outstanding balance).
Citibank Cash Back Platinum Visa or MAsterCard - 5% cash back at ALL petrol stations, monthly cap RM30 for petrol.
UOB One Card Visa Classic or Platinum - 5% Cash Back capped at RM30/month.

Maybank Petronas Visa at Petronas Only - 5X TP or approximately 2% returns. No monthly cap. And on weekends up to 8X TP for Petrol and Groceries.
CIMB Petronas earns you 2% cash back at Petronas and 5% every 1st of the month.

American Express Gold Credit Card - 5X Membership Reward equivalent to 2.5% cash back. No monthly cap.
Maybankard 2 Cards American Express - 5XTP equivalent to approximately 2% returns plus extra 5% cash back on weekends . No cap for TP but cash back capped at RM50/month including petrol.
American Express Cards - 2X Membership Reward equivalent to 1% cash back. No monthly cap.
Click here to see petrol stations that accept Amex.

OTHER CREDIT CARDS for Petrol - please understand the terms and conditions of the cash back mechanism before signing up.

HSBC MPower Amanah CAsh Back Credit Card

Public Bank Visa Esso Gold cash back is based on tiers at ESSO/Mobil only (please refer to alexwsk post #67)
< = RM100 0.5%
>RM100 - RM200 1.0%
>RM200 - RM500 2.0%
>RM500 - RM800 3.0%
>RM800 5.0%

Update April 2011

Citibank Shell credit Card - thanks to gerrardling see post #144

Basically you have to spend retail to get your higher rebate on your fuel purchases.
RM250 x 4% = RM10 rebate per month
RM500 x 6% = RM30 rebate per month
RM800 x 8% = RM64 rebate per month

Basically, you should get the card based on the petrol pumped per pump at Shell....
Only at RM800 per month would you get RM64, more than other cash-back CC (RM50 for OCBC Titanium/Maybankard2 AMEX)

To qualify for Tier 1, you need to spend RM50 per month + RM250 Shell fuel to get RM10 back... which is nett 3.33% Cash Back
To qualify for Tier 2, you need to spend RM500 per month + RM500 Shell fuel to get RM30 back... which is nett 3.00% Cash Back
To qualify for Tier 3, you need to spend RM1700 per month + RM800 Shell fuel to get RM64 back... which is nett 2.56% Cash Back

Ctibank Shell card rebate keep decreasing if u spend more because there are no rebates for other spending except for Shell fuel. The actual rebate is certainly less than 4%

Reward Cards that are to be used together with credit cards.

Esso Smiles - 3000 points = RM45 petrol or 1.5% cash back.
Petronas Mesra - approximately 0.5% cash back based on fuel redemption. See post #24.
Bonuslink at Shell only - approximately 0.5% returns based on Parkson voucher. See post #36.

Thanks to zenquix, alexwsk, David83, ch_teo, Alec.Yong, bob for their contribution to the above info.

If you pump at BHP, and you don't have OCBC Titanium MC or Maybankard 2 Amex, do consider UOB One Card where at least you get 2% Smart$ cash with it.

You must be crazy enough to be purchasing engine oil at petrol station mart. You can easily save 40% or more when you buy from spare parts shop or even hypermarket at times.

haha, well usually I don't even buy engine oil at Petrol stations but I guess I do pay for high price for engine oil since I only service my cars at the car service centres. The last time I had to buy engine oil was when my stupid old volvo suddenly the engine oil when down and was at shell and the guy asked me got bonus link, that's why I know can use bonus link at shell for engine oil. My new car comes with 3 years full free service including engine oil smile.gif

so andrekua, what card you use for petrol?

I use OCBC + Smiles card. I used Smiles cos my company fleet card under my name (cos nobody wanna register) and use it to get free drinks, wiper, rain-x, etc.

If you frequent a spare part shop often, they will let you 'look' (swipe) card without charging extra.

LOL... I dont believe it too. Until recently whereby my customer was applying it to his father in-law car and test it for me to see. My intention was not about not having to wipe or having the water flew away by the force of the wind. Its just that, my vios has very poor visibility on drivers and passenger side window as well as side mirrors. After applying it, now no problem to see in the rain. The dispersing water make it less likely to fog.

Oh God, now come out Spray type Rain-X already sweat.gif
Mine is still bottle type, need to pour out one.
The twin pack RM19.90 is very hard to come by, you just need to shop around hypermarkets very often to discover them.

can you also use the Mesra card with MBB Petronas CC and earns points for both cards? If yes, can you also elaborate how the redemption i.e. how many points = RMvoucher or RMfuel both MBB Petronas and Mesra.

IINM the answer is YES.
Because I recalled a content of MBB Petronas card talking about "Earn extra Mesra point everytime you use MBB petronas card at Petronas stations".

However, things may have changed.
