so far i've no issue with the shell, and castrol oil that i bought from tesco.
in fact. i recently bought a bottle of shell helix ultra at 80 ringgit. fresh bottle pulak tu. ( bargain price i know). its now in my car, and i've no issues.
but i found something out. the oils that they sell in tesco is actually brought in through their channels from the UK.  so for some of the product, the oil spec is lower that what u can get locally. for example. castrol magnatec 10-40 tesco is sl rated. the one sold locally is actually sm rated.
i think most engine oils officially sold in malaysia is at the moment sm and sn rated.  where else , in the uk. most fully syn is sm rated, most semi is sl rated.

they do, but i didnt check. biggrin.gif will do so the next time i walk into tesco...

oh, and castrol magnatec local is sn rated. castrol edge is sm rated (same as the one from uk..) im guessing castrol edge is brought in from eu and repacked here locally ? if this is true, then no issues in using castrol edge from tesco and its also cheaper rite... cheaper by 60 bucks...

i have been using shell helix ultra fully synthetic bought from tesco for rm99 a bottle (4L). usually bought 2-3 bottles everytime. been using for the past 70k+ km. better power compared to petronas oil. so far i am satisfied with shell ultra helix from tesco... save me rm100 from normal price.

Proves our local prices are OVERinflated with a HUGE profit margin!!
If Tesco can IMPORT such branded oils and sell them at so much lower prices AND still make a profit, one wonders...??? sad.gif

so u got to look out for the weekend specials.

tesco oil should be genuine otherwise will be sue by manufacturer right. but the problem is packaging at UK and the quality is not par compared to oil in local.. if im not mistaken and some of it is not up to date also..
if u guys insist to buy the oil from tesco.. u should check the quality of the oil

SG = Introduced 1989 has much more active dispersant to combat black sludge
SH = Introduced 1993 has same engine tests as SG, but includes phosphorus limit 0.12%, together with control of foam, volatility and shear stability
SJ = Introduced 1996 has the same engine tests as SG/SH, but phosphorus limit 0.10% together with variation on volatility limits
SL = Introduced 2001, all new engine tests reflective of modern engine designs meeting current emissions standards
SM = Introduced November 2004, improved oxidation resistance, deposit protection and wear protection, also better low temperature performance over the life of the oil compared to previous categories

As what I read & understand from Wikipedia, I think it's Esso pack for Tesco. Correct me if I'm wrong.

"...In 1997 Tesco and Esso (part of Exxonmobil) forged a business alliance that included several petrol filling stations on lease from Esso, with Tesco operating the attached stores under the Express format. In turn Esso operates the forecourts and sells their fuel via the Tesco store. 200 Tesco/Esso stores now exist across the UK..."

QUOTE(ultramaman @ Jul 7 2011, 07:07 PM)
was wondering,
Anyone used tesco brand engine oil ? anyone dare to use ? its much more cheaper than the usual rite... but if not mistaken, the api rating is the same as the other more established brands... so how ?
anyone felt any difference  in the shell /castrol engine oil purchased frm tesco ( which are made and packed in the e.u) and the locally packed shell/castrol engine oils ? is the grade the same ?
always wondered because the e.u packed oils would have been  made to suit their climate rite, and our oils here are made to 'tahan' the extra hot climate here...  anyone can comment ?

Hi,

I am presently using Tesco's Semi Synthetic 10W-40 (RM54.90 to 69.90) presently in Civic 1.6 EXi (A) 1995 and am glad to report that the engine is running smoothly. Morning startups are smooth too. Very little oil burn as well. Able to extend mileage up to 8k km before oil change interval.

Overall, I feel that this oil is a bargain for the money despite what others say or fear about it. Of course I do not know what actually happens to the engine parts internally unless some mechanic takes it apart to verify its condition but since the engine is starting and running so smoothly, I am prepared to continue to use it.

Previously I have used Tesco's Mineral Grade 20W-50 (RM27.90 to 33.90) in Wira 1.5 (M) 1996 and report that morning startups appear to be not as smooth as compared to Tesco SS above perhaps due to thickness of oil affecting start up circulation. Once engine is warmed up, engine is smooth. Oil change interval is also less than that of Tesco's SS before engine seems to lose power and is less smooth. Best to stick to 5k km and below for oil change interval.

For this mineral grade, I feel that it is best for older vehicles and NOT for demanding drivers requiring high performance and extended oil change intervals. For the price, it may also serve as an engine flush if you wish it to - for a 500 or 1000 km drain interval. As for me, I will continue to use it within the limits described.

Overall Tesco branded stuff tends to sell at low prices and provide decent (not exceptional) performance for the little money. This comment does not relate to foodstuff as taste is highly subjective. I believe that Tesco can sell stuff at this rate due to global bulk purchase and distribution and no premium/cost is added in to pad up the branding, packaging, marketing and promotions.

To say that the product inside is "fake" or "recycled" seems to be off the edge. I have heard this from workshops and those who stick loyally to certain brands. Perhaps they cannot compete on the price and need to complain in this way.

So far, I have not seen or come across anything that confirms or strongly suggest that the product is recycled, fake, stolen or defective in some material way except remarks in passing.

As a matter of fact, the product is cheap and will appeal to those who are NOT brand conscious or demanding.

Most EU oils sold by Tesco is SL conformity. Feel that's good enuf for most modern cars.
Hv been using them eg Castrol Magnatec, Mobil S & Mobil 1 for my old & new rides.
Save lotsa $$$, too!! thumbup.gif

Added on December 20, 2011, 8:52 amps. Most importantly is REGULAR oil changes @prescribed intervals eg 5k Km or 3 mths, whichever comes first!
