Hey guys, am sorry and really hate to interrupt u guys...

But can all the optima owners contribute to my questions here? I would really appreciate it...

Am a new guy here, was plannin to get 508, but now I want to see the optima side of the story..

First of all, I have heard the wind noise can get a bit high(>60mph = >100kmh) according to the US optima owners, can u comment about it from ur experience? anyone reached 160-180kmh in optima before? how is the cabin noise or NVH in compare to 90-100kmh?

Secondly, I have heard a lot of US Kia optima owners complaint about transmission problems and similar complaints are piling up more as days go by, do we hav the same problem in m'sia? (they usually are like 'driving in highway one day and suddenly the car kinda leaped forward as if the car hit something in front with a big clunk noise coming from underneath the car, and the rev all of sudden raised to around 4-5000 and gear stuck in 2nd gear (sometimes 4th), then wont be able to change the gear either wit paddle.. then turn the car off then on only able to fix the problem, the car then behaves quite normally for the next 3-4 days then comes the transmission failure and for that kia SC in US usually changed the whole transmission for these owners' am not sure if the same thing has ever happened to m'sia optima owners, and if so, how did naza fix these issues? (since it is known naza's after sell services are horrible)

Lastly, the burning smell that was mentioned not long ago, anyone has figured wat that was?

Thx guys
*
I just got my car today and drove for nearly 180km to test for any issue. Drove up to 145km/hr. No issue on the wind sound but no deny the tire abit noisy BUT the Infinity sound system is PERFECT. I am those people that love bass and techno songs. So when I on my sound system, it covered all sounds from outside and the basic sound proofing for the car is good because no rattling sounds from the door or back panel despite blasting techno songs.

Oh ya. Today my friend test drive Optima at 1 Utama. A lot of techno songs was played and the sound is good. Much to my friend surprise when he saw that Kia is using Optima K5 sound system to play that. Very cool.

Those without the rear aircon vents were 2011 units. All 2012 units have the rear aircon vents.

Ok then you have some time to read up more on both cars. But no matter how much u read, it can never replace a test drive. Ive tested the Optima 7 times already and im more or less certain. Spend some time on this thread and ull learn alot about the car.
*
My SA told me that there is a batch of Optima K5 from early Jan 2012 dont have the rear air-cond. So remember to check when you are buying. Besides that, he can give a good discount for those no rear aircond model if anyone want it.

A very nice guy and know what he is doing. Ya, he brought me to Submit for a movie before taking my car.

PICTURE OF MY YUMA COIL MAT. Custom made.
Attached Image

I bought it from Sh@rty 5 (http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1823052). COD at his shop in Klang. A very nice chap.

Yuma coil mat is double the thickness of a normal mat. Very thick, no smell and custom made. Come with 2 years warranty, got warranty card.

I paid RM390 for the whole set and RM150 for a non Yuma mat for my bonnet.

The usual price for Yuma mat is only RM350. I paid extra RM40 because of the color that I chose. It is a special silver that used in Mercedes. I love that.

Added on April 1, 2012, 3:11 amOh ya. For new K5 user, REMEMBER to release the pressure from your tyre after taking your ride.

My car tyre come in 360 despite the recommended only 240.

Subjective question. Below is the mod on my list.

1. Sierra Glow; silica based paint protection (http://www.sierraglow.com/about/about.html)
2. Coil Mat; mentioned it at my previous post
3. Change the Kia Emblems (7 pcs); I got mine from Shark Racing
4. Change a more silent tyre; either Michelin Pilot Sport 3 or the new Goodyear F1
5. Getting Grounding cables, VS or Alternator Booster
6. Chrome door handle
7. Auto close side mirror relay kit
8. Front camera or sensor
9. Stabilizing bars; either import from Shark Racing or wait for Ultra Racing (not out yet sad.gif)
10. Some sound proofing materials to enhance the listening exp from Infinity sound system; STP
11. Change a lighter Crank Pulley
12. A lighter 18" rim; most likely Enkei as the default rim weigh around 10kg/each.

Edit: Forgot the most important one; TINTING. Got my one from Raytech. Very very nice. And looking forward for dual exhaust system but certainly not for now.

Guys,

Just back with my K5 for alignment. It seems that, the SC Mgr told me that <5000km, u still can do ur alignment FOC. rclxms.gif

Also, I highlighted the burnt smell issue that was brought by CM98.
So, this is the answer they gave me. Not sure if this is correct or not. Sifus, pls verify this. (I had to ask few KIA people there until I get this. others are hopeless)

> He told me it's from the catalytic converter  - which is the exhaust emission control. The job of the catalytic converter is to convert harmful pollutants into less harmful emissions before they ever leave the car's exhaust system. It convert CO, Hydrocarbons & oxides of nitrogen to CO2, N2 & H2O. rclxub.gif

Just like the explaination by RlanD but,  thumbup.gif
Acceleration = High Rev = High amount of conversion = Burnt smell.

Normal driving = Medium rev = Medium amount of conversion = No burnt smell.

Since the exhaust running right underneath the aircond blower, probably that's how the smell leaked in.
It might be due to failed catalytic converter but I reckon most probably not as the cat converter failure since it's new car and the smell should go away.
The bad news: A new cat is expensive.  cry.gif
The good news is it's probably covered under warranty. Check with your SA icon_rolleyes.gif

I havent experience this on my K5 as I probably havent drive as hard as CM98 did ---> to sayyyyyyyang my bright silver.
Well, I hope this help. If it doesnt, we all can try ask KIA some more! Or it's just a plastic bags got stuck at the exhaust and got burnt. hehe laugh.gif
*
My SC told me alignment is FOC if your mileage is below 2000km, some forte owners told me the same thing too. So new K5 owners, get your alignments done before it's too late. It really helps, my PG baby don't pull so much to the left anymore. Btw, I'm still pretty much bothered with the rough edges on my steering wheel plastics. The show car at 1utama has the same problem too, so is the sorento there. You fellas quickly go rub rub a bit your steering wheel, in a up down up down motion, especially obvious when you do that when you are stoping at a red light, beside a beautiful chun chick. Hehehe...

Jokes aside, I'm serious. Just feel it along the plastic edges beside the phone buttons, but not all the way back. No other jap car has this 'feature' unsure.gif .

Btw, i drove 140-160kmh along the highway yesterday and tried to sniff the smell when i reached home. Takda bau langsung. My security guards were staring at me in a funny way. laugh.gif

I played with the paddle shift a lot on the highway quite nice but it suddenly occurred to me that we're still dealing with a auto box, not a manual box, so I'm afraid it might be bad for the autobox in long term so better don't play with it too much. The auto cruise on the optima is a little too aggressive to my liking. It dropped gear and accelerate like a ah beng quite often and surprises me from my driving zen always. Now i feel auto cruise is not so useful when we do not have a smooth autobahn in malaysia. shakehead.gif

Wouldn't it be better to custom make a mat with a plastic piece in the centre like this one?:-

Should last much longer. I paid RM180 for pair of 5 pieces (but only the driver has the plastic sheet in the middle). All with custom stitches on the sides. I think someone here sells them for RM140-150 if not mistaken

Hi, warranty covers wear and tear, cause after some time, using those normal coil mat, will cause the mat to have a hole, so with this, if there is a hole, we will be replacing one new set for you smile.gif

Regarding this mat, we don't see the need of sewing the side stitch there.. ( cannot really think of a reason why )

* and take note that such mat are usually ordered from factory, so it will not be something really custom made. As they would use back the oem measurement to get it done

notice we custom made using our very own measurement

and why us? instead of the normal side stitch type?

we are able to sew velcro onto your coil mat, so that it doesn't move around

Sorry guys, I know everyone is quite excited on the mods for the optima..

Can I ask a last question?

For those who has drove both optima and 508, is it worth to spend extra Rm27k for 508? since it has awesome interiors etc... but without sunroof, small glove box space, no cool glove box...
Oh, more importantly no reverse camera, no memory seat...

Seems that Sh@rty 5 already explained quite clear on the questions and I agreed with his explanation. I am not related in his business. I am just a happy user of his products and services.

I meeting him again tomorrow for some amendment to get a perfect fit for my rear mat.

I never test drive a 508 but did test drive a 407 before. The spec and price sure is attractive but somehow the build of the car seems flimsy.

So if you ask me whether 508 or Optima, I would say that Optima. Been driving for 2 days and very worth the price that I am paying (142k).

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The burnt smell "BAU" will come out according to CM when you push hard ( High Rev ) about 15 min or more.

High rev mean high RPM of engine which consider above 4000 RPM and this basically at the accelerating stage of the machine from first gear to third gear. Fourth, Fifth and Six Consider as cruising with the engine RPM below 4000 unless you drop one or two level of gear to get a torque with high rpm for over take sprint.

How to perform for BURNT SMELL test :

1) Choose less busy route or highway : good one is Guthrie highway.

2) Set a timer

3) Switch off ECO mode

4) Accelerate the machine or floor the accelerating pedal or push the pedal hard either from static or from a slow movement of the car@30km/h.
When the machine at fourth gear slows down your machine to 30 km/hour and accelerate again the machine to fourth gear. Repeat the procedure till 15 minute +.

Test control : By monitoring the RPM meter - The meter needle indicator must be in average > 4000 RPM.

5) Then try to sniff any BAU.

Objective of the test : To heat the exhaust system from mid temperature (Normal drive condition) to High temperature (Aggressive drive condition )
Which at this stage the burnt smell detected.

Note :
1) High REV and High speed is two different conditions :
- High REV meaning HIGH ENGINE RPM
- High speed meaning fast movement of the vehicle but probably with low RPM as ratio of the gear train.

2) Drove 140 - 160 at cruising speed (<4000 RPM) - With a few of drop gear for over take sprint may increase the temp of the exhaust system for a while but it will back to medium temp as the wind blows and cool down the exhaust system while cruising and when you reach home the BAU will gone with the wind at the highway. smile.gif

Yeah. The unlimited mileage warranty is a big bonus for people that travel outstation real often.

You can join the TT if you want. Not necessary to have a K5 to join the fun. We can just chilling.

Same goes here. mine was off a bit only around 8 to the left... to the left...

JuneSeptember, I did the search around the stearing from your last comment on it. and I found this. Is this the one you referring to? if that is it, then it is sharp. easily can cut your knuckles. that's a very poor finishing on the stearing.

btw, im quite happy with the autocruise response. The agressiveness depends on the the road surface/level anyway. but that's just my liking. probably im not too familiar with this autocruise before.

Guys,

I had another test drive on the Optima during the 1 Utama road show yesterday. I changed the test drive route to include a few trips till the traffic lights before the Penchala tunnel and then return. I did 3 rounds in the Optima. Testing high speeds (reached 135kmph), high revs, cornering at high speeds, hard braking, cornering while braking, etc. We had a full load of ppl.

As i said before, im quite impressed with its road handling. Mid range acceleration is quite good although sluggish from start. Suspension comfort is good despite the 18 inch tyres. Braking systems are crisp and precise. Gives u alot of confidence.

But only thing lacking is there is no indicator when the ESP has kicked in. This is actually a safety feature in most cars to let the driver know it he has reached the limit of his capabilities and the ESP is now taking over. We need to always remind ourselves that, ESP and all the safety features are not meant to replace safe driving.

There were 2 Optima's on display. 1 didnt have the rear aircon and it was a 2011 model. The one mentioned above as Jan 2012 is not a 2012 model but just a carry forward from 2011.

The other thing i noticed was the water vapor in both front headlights. This shows the seals arent good and if this problem appears on cars this new then it aint good. I was told that this is a common problem with the Forte's and there is some mention about it in the manual. Can anybody confirm?

But funny thing is, I didnt notice the burnt smell this time. And i think i know why. I had high revs for a short period and then shifted to high speed (6th gear) before driving slowly around 1 Utama. This slow drive probably removes all traces of the smell. So from what i gather about this burnt smell, it comes during high revs only and disappears during normal driving which is why those of you who drive fast on highways over a longer period of time, didnt get the smell.

To test this i would suggest just doing a high rev drive around your taman. High revs doesnt always need to be high speed. U usually hit high revs during the first 2 gear shifts. So floor your pedal then release when u reach an obstruction, then floor it again and repeat a few times as u turn or go over bumps. Do this for about 10-15mins then stop and smell. Dont drive casually after the high rev drive. Stop immediately and smell as this burnt smell seemingly only occurs immediately after a high rev drive.

As for the guy asking bout the Peugeot 508 and if its worth paying RM27K more, i would say this. The specs on the 508 are better than the Optima for sure. It also has a more powerful turbo engine. Hence the extra 27K. I was very impressed with the specs and power on the 508 but as i said before the following put me off:

4 main drawbacks of the 508 (in my opinion):

1) Design - rear design is poor and overall doesnt have a wow factor
2) Warranty terms - only 3 yrs/100,000 km
3) Too many issues on the 308T have yet to be resolved. There are chances of it being repeated in the 508
4) Rear seat discomfort over bumps/uneven roads - due to 18 inch tyres and harder suspension

But i must say the specs and interior design of the 508 is the best out there if u compare the Mondeo, Passat, Optima, Camry, Accord, Teana and Sonata. I would even say that the interior looks more classy than the new BMW 3 series 320d and Audi A4 1.8T.

If it had a better design and a 5 yr warranty i would have gone for the 508. But for now, i think the Optima is the best all rounder.

btw, RPM at 110kmph is about 2300 right?

These features aren't that important. 508 has slightly better safety features and a more powerful engine. Plus it has a Parking Management System so it should be good enuf for parking. The 508 is also shorter than the Optima.

The other thing i noticed was the water vapor in both front headlights. This shows the seals arent good and if this problem appears on cars this new then it aint good. I was told that this is a common problem with the Forte's and there is some mention about it in the manual. Can anybody confirm?

Hi CM98,

That is true and is officially announced in KIA Technical Service Bulletin that it happens in most KIA models. Here is the attachment

Firstly i dont think the temperature of the exhaust system as anything to do with it. I say this because some forumers here who tested the car after long highway cruising at 140kmph did not have the smell. A long highway drive at high speed would surely heat the exhaust system more than a short burst of speed for 10mins.

Secondly, the smell is much more pronounced outside the car near the driver's side. So the issue isant about infiltration of exhaust into the cabin.

Thirdly, 6 test drive cars had this burnt smell so all 6 cant possibly have plastic bags stuck anywhere.

But how does the catalytic converter cause a burnt smell?

But for now, i think the Optima is the best all rounder.

btw, RPM at 110kmph is about 2300 right?

lol, i think you are the only one i know that test drives a car so many times before buying it. thumbup.gif

and +1 on 508's interior. as for the looks, doesn't really stand out but it looks classy at the very least. gives you the continental 'feel'.
