Went for a test drive at the Kia roadshow in 1U 2 days ago and I was pretty impressed with the handling and ride of the car. Did a comparison study of all D segments the K5 is competing against and seems the K5 is truly ahead of its class:

Good write up but you should have included kerb weight in your comparisons. Its an important factor that determines power and fuel consumption. You should have also included more details on the specs. The K5 stands out from the rest because of its design and its superior specs. Your comparison chart for the specs doesnt actually show this. There are more safety and creature comforts that the Optima has. Also, i would also suggest mentioning whether the warranty terms have a mileage limiter as most Jap models have. The Koreans dont.

The complete specs for the Optima:

2) 6 speed automatic with paddle shifters and Eco mode
3) HID Xenon headlights with Auto Leveling & Static Bending Lights
4) Daytime LED running lights (DRL)
5) Rear LED lights and LED side turn signal lights
6) Auto Light Control System with Escort Lights and washers
7) Electric foldable side mirrors
8) 6 airbags (front, side & curtain airbags)
9) Anti Lock Braking System (ABS)
11) Electronic Brakeforce Distribution System (EBD)
12) Traction Control System (TCS)
13) Hill Assist Control (HAC)
14) Cornering Brake Control (CBC)
15) Brake Assist System (BAS)
16) Rear Parking Assist System with rear camera
17) Speed Sensing Auto door lock
18) Impact Sensing Auto door unlock
19) Auto Cruise Control
20) 18 inch sporty alloy wheels with full disk brakes and full spare alloy wheel
21) MacPherson type suspension with Gas shock absorbers with High Performance Dampers (HPD) with sliding valve
22) Infinity Surround Sound system with 8 speakers & subwoofer
23) 6 in dash CD changer system with Bluetooth, AUX, USB & iPOD connectivity
24) Dual zone auto air con with rear air con vents
25) 8 way power seat (driver) with dual memory function
26) Push Start ignition with Smart Key
27) 3.5” Color TFT LCD display
28) Premium Leather seats
29) Panoramic Electric Sunroof
30) First Korean car with 5 Star NHTSA rating from America

Btw, how long was the test drive and can you take it on further route? Whats the highest speed u managed to reach?

Yes, you are right, bro .... the focus of my comparison was to take into account the common gadgetry as well as certain facts concerning dimensions (which are easier to find). There are vehicles where the kerb weight information is not provided and it's a real pain trying to find the time to go search for it online.

The spec list of the K5 is so long, if I were to list them all one by one, there is no basis for comparison because there are certain features that are unique to the K5 (such as memory seats, Infinity sound system, unlimited mileage warranty). I try to be as general as I could while at the same time sharing how far underspecced Japanese cars are, therefore mentioning the common items that most D segment buyers are looking for when looking for a car.

I was not able to take the car on a longer route other than stipulated by the company. On hindsight, I should have because I know the roads pretty well and there were no other requests for it at that time of the day (I guess). Kia's decision to pass the car through Sri Pentas is not very wise because traffic can be very heavy there, slowing down each test drive session and increasing the risk of accident (I almost hit a Myvi). When Peugeot did their roadshow, they routed all cars to the back road leading to The Club/KDU which is pretty empty and have lots of straights to test the acceleration. As such, my best speed was probably only about 80-90kph.

You might wanna include the following in your blog. Will make things clearer for those interested in the K5. I just think your spec comparison above doesnt give the K5 the glory it deserves.  biggrin.gif

The Optima is the only car compared to the Japanese that comes with / has:

1) High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights
2) DRL (Daytime Running Lights)
3) Automatic lights
4) Rain sensing wipers
5) Power driver seats with memory
6) Cruise control
7) Shiftronic paddle shifters
8) 6 airbags
9) Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
10) Hill Assist Control (HAC)
11) Cornering Brake Control (CBC)
12) Impact sensing auto door unlock
13) Gas shock absorbers and High Performance Dampers with sliding valve mechanism
14) Premium Infinity sound system
15) Power dual sunroof
16) 5 years warranty with unlimited mileage

Note: The other Japanese models might have some of the features mentioned above, but only in the higher spec 2.4L model. Im comparing 2.0L models only. Do correct me if im wrong.

Or maybe list down the full spec list i provided above in your blog. I compiled that list from various sources. I dont know why Kia doesnt make a similar list on their brochure instead of leaving out many items.  rclxub.gif

Good suggestion. Will do that soon

*Mistake in your blog. K5 only come with 8 speakers and not 10 speakers as stated in your blog.
Noted. Will correct

and in the blog, u mentioned using paddle shifter when the gear at D is abt the same as playing with battery dead phone... At D, the paddle shifter still works...as a temporary change to overtake cars or short accelaration
*
Hmmm, strange because the SA told me it doesn't and when I tested the paddles in D, indeed, there is no difference. Nevertheless, will note this in the blog and anyone else is free to comment

Oh, SA also mentioned that the initial batch of 100 units brought in for the launch has no rear blowers whereas current ones have. Anyone can confirm this?

I am in if got cheap tyre~! Willingly to go to Ipoh.

PICTURE OF MY YUMA COIL MAT. Custom made.
[attachmentid=2766808]

I bought it from Sh@rty 5 (http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1823052). COD at his shop in Klang. A very nice chap.

Yuma coil mat is double the thickness of a normal mat. Very thick, no smell and custom made. Come with 2 years warranty, got warranty card.

I paid RM390 for the whole set and RM150 for a non Yuma mat for my bonnet.

The usual price for Yuma mat is only RM350. I paid extra RM40 because of the color that I chose. It is a special silver that used in Mercedes. I love that.

What are the warranty coverage? Usually this mat easily damage by our heel

Wouldn't it be better to custom make a mat with a plastic piece in the centre like this one?:-

Should last much longer. I paid RM180 for pair of 5 pieces (but only the driver has the plastic sheet in the middle). All with custom stitches on the sides. I think someone here sells them for RM140-150 if not mistaken

Just look at the Sportage,it looks so nice ,but how often u see them on the road? HARDLY! Good design will win you a few fans overnight but wont last long.Great driving charecteristics and a design that will last a long time will win you  loyalists.

Which part of remote jungles of Malaysia do you stay? Or maybe you have a desk bound job surrounded by 4 walls without windows that does not allow you to see the outside world? Not a day passes where I don't see at least one when I'm in the city.

He rents in Mont Kiara (or so he claims) and drives around alot in Uptown and SS2 areas. These are the prime areas where ive seen the Sportage too. But when someone practices selective sight im sure he can even say he's seen more Bentley's than Sportage's. Why do u think i think alot of his comments are thrash and should be treated as such? He might even say his previous Myvi which he sold in 2009 was better than the Optima.  laugh.gif
*
MyVi is better mah .... easy to park, SCs everywhere, some might even argue that the after sales service is better than Naza, better resale value in terms of depreciation

Of course, like you say, that's being very selective and ignoring every other positives and improvements Hyundai/Kia has brought to the automotive world. laugh.gif
