Of the 4 USB ports, only 1 seems to be detected by my Base 3.0.
The others still have power as the cooling fan works when connected.
Even my system storage is not detected when I installed the latest beta fw via the USB port that works.
Is it a hardware problem or a software glitch?
Please help.

The problem existed before I installed the latest beta fw.
In any case, I will try the older fw and see if it solves the problem
Thanks for the suggestion.

wow...graphics overload...someone must have criticized the GUI so badly that the developers came out with this...

My fav is the desert and also mountain scenes...

Brush metal looks great for small curvy stuff, but when blown to big scale, just did fit in...but thats my opinion only.

The older fw didn't solve the problem, still only 1 usb port detected.
I have been using a PC cooler with 2 small fans, connected to one of the usb ports.
Could this have fried the circuits?
Do they share a common pathway sans the one that is still working?

Added on May 19, 2011, 11:16 amThe 3 non-working USB apparently share a common hub.
The one that is working, next to the LAN port, is from the motherboard.
As suggested by Michael, a work around solution will be to get a hub for the existing working port.
Any suggestion as to a good USB hub to get?
Tks for any help given.

I owned the Prime 3.0 before and own the Max now.

PQ wise very similar to WDTV Live. It uses Sigma anyway. The good thing is that it plays full BD backups. It can bitstreams lossless codecs. Plays everything u throw at it.

BD loading is not that slow now with the Max. The Prime was slower. Max is pretty fast. Compared to the Oppo its slow, but compared to Pannys etc, shd be decent.

No complaints.

so apart from playing full bd backups and bitstreaming lossless audio, there's no point getting a dune hd if PQ is one of my major motivation to upgrade?

Honestly speaking yes if your usage and main point of upgrading is that. There are other aspects to look at for the Dune whereby some features are not available in most entry level media players.

if you play hi-res audio tracks (FLAC, AIFF, WAV, etc) with 88.1/96/192 kHz sampling rates, then it'd be wise to get something else like the Dune/Oppo. The WDTV Live resamples it internally to 48 kHz, regardless analog/optical/hdmi out

if your MKV has Dolby TrueHD audio tracks, you will get static or no sound. You would have to manually extract the AC3 core and remux your MKV.
if your MKV has DTSMA audio tracks, you will get sound, whether it is decoding DTSMA or the DTS-core, I have no idea since I use analog outs...

if the above applies to you, best get the Dune or something else smile.gif

thanks for the advice. one thing i must mention is that my wdtv live does bitstream dolby truehd to my amp and it outputs as truehd. with dts(ma), it only manages dts. on both audio formats, it's always dts/dd... the only no sound situation is when the mkv is encoded with aac5.1 codec. i'll have to output it as steoreo to get sound. wdtv live is pretty good smile.gif

i do agree with its inability to output @ 192khz. i was hoping that the sigma 8642 would be an improvement over sigma 8655 in both PQ/AQ smile.gif

if dune hd has audiophile grade components then i'll certainly get it!!

Last time I streamed HD contents via wireless on my media player and after a while, my router overheat and my router can be considered half-dead. The performance of my router degraded so much and hangs very often. Since then, I stream over a wired LAN setup. laugh.gif

How high is the bit rate? As long your wired LAN can achieve at least 15-20mbps should do fine for most files already.

20Mbps is low bit rate for 1080p movie, high bit rate is >50Mbps, a decent 100Mbs NIC can achieve 90% of the bandwidth, which is above 90Mbps. I heard the Realtek chip is poor at network throughput, my xtreamer ftp throughput at best is near 40Mbps, so when stream the high bit rate 1080p movie, it stutters ... I hope sigmal chipset won't have this issue.

well, 100mbps (as well as other rated network speeds) is only a theoretical transfer rate, subject to network protocols, overheads and other factors. It's really a matter of the kind of network setup you have, and whether it supports your needs well enough. For me, 100mbps works fine for my media streaming, but I'll be upgrading my equipment to Cat6 Gigabit anyway as it's too slow to transfer files between PC/NAS over 100mbps. Sorry for the OT.

Yea, 100mbps after considering those network overheads and such, I am getting about 5-7MB/s. Although streaming is fine for most files I have, transferring to my NAS drive takes a while for large files so I have plans to upgrade my network setup to gigabit connection but will have to see how since a lot of equipments needs to be changed including my homeplugs. sweat.gif

Hi Sifus,

I recently get myself a Dune HD Smart D1. The player still come with the original Version "100828_0034" firmware. I downloaded the latest beta version of firmware Version "110511_2007_beta" (BETA version) but when I tried to update, it displayed a 'invalid firmware file' message and prompted to restart without updating.

Would like to check with you all if there's any update sequence(from which version to which) that I need to follow or actually I can update from original version direct to the latest beta.

Thanks: Ling

best is to link the Dune to a network, so you can choose which firmware you wanna update...

If you have problem (first time i heard this), update to a latest version which is NOT BETA...try it out first

Bro,

Thanks a lot for the tips. I downloaded a few version to my pendrive (2GB) but all I get was the 'invalid firmware' after the firmware checking by Dune HD Smart D1. All the file size downloaded was correct though and I also tried the zip file.

Now updated to the latest beta firmware after follow your method. Have to move around my stimix modem to get the LAN cable long enough to reach my Dune. biggrin.gif

Is it because of the animation when moving from icon to icon? Turn off the animation and see.

Using animation is ok if u do not use 23.976fps as the output. Select 1080p/60Hz and also switch on 24/50/60 on.

This way u get faster UI but it would require handshaking when u watch BDs.

Samsung is one of the cheapest. Also fairly reliable. But like any HDD, still got chance of failure. Find a shop that has 7 day, 1 to 1 exchange. Buy it then go home and test (say using surface scan). If got problem, go back and exchange.

8-bay probox is interesting. But too tall so won't fit in shelf. Also I think I prefer 2x 4-bay, then no need to have all the HDD running all the time. Such a waste of power having all 8 HDD running but watching only from 1.

I have 2 x 1TB and 1 x 1.5TB and 1 x 2TB hard disk, all are sleeping (stop spinning) when idle > 1 hour, then wake up if access it.

Actually those desktop HDDs are not designed to run for 24 x 7 x 365, it will fail after 1 - 2 years if you running in this way.

A desktop HDD can fail any time, so far I don't see any brand is damn reliable. all about the same, it is all depend your luck. so backup is the best practise.

I nabbed that guy when he came down for the Liverpool match. Spent almost 6 hours calibrating my projector and I tumpang my TV as well. Charged me old price ie before the new England Kung Fu price. While calibrating, I was given a few lessons on what its about.. What the f**k I have been watching all these years?????!!!!

My problem now is I have to find the time to watch all my movies l over again.

I would strongly recommend that you guys get your projector and TV calibrate by this fella. It is really worth it. My installer came to lower my projector by 1 feet as recommended and he too was truly amazed by the picture. Even DVDs are astounding. Moh Tak Keng. Cannot throw away my Dvds now loh.I didn't know that IPman was wearing Black Chinese costume before.

Cheers Anfielddude..its now 1 feet down..

Thanks for the kind words. Hope u enjoy ur display.

To answer werewolf's previous question.

The Dune has a fixed output of 4:4:4. The Oppo has colour space options for output, 4:2:2, 4:4:4 or RGB. This option depending on the display, can yield some improvements in the display if u can test which one ur displays prefer.

One of these days I will compare the output of the Dune, Oppo vs a test pattern generator and see if I can make out any differences.

Dune Max comes with BD-ROM & 1 Internal HDD capable with full function
Smart B1 is only the Dune with a BD-ROM (BD/DVD playback), need external HDD for softcopy playback.

I don't think they bring it in to Malaysia.

U might want to buy it directly from US/EU.

press the mute button on the remote 4 times and then the numbers 1 or 2.
A window will open on the screen to confirm the region change.
Then press OK.

Yes, one must be on the main page/ sources first.
Kinda unfriendly as one have to hit the stop button and return buttons a few times to get to the main page.
Wonder if they can have a fw update where one can change it whilst still in the movie folder of Zappiti.

If new f/w can auto detect region and play instantly, that would be awesome. Too early to daydream? blush.gif Consumers always ask for convenience. So, auto detect would be best. I tend to forget that it's on Region B. Then have to go to main menu and change it again.

There is PATCH in order to change the region code...take note.

http://www.mpcclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18187

It will work with all Firmware and so far, all models from Dune 3.0 upwards.

Make sure you are in the Main menu (or better known as home screen) when you do that trick

Cheers

My Base 3.0 came with the region change feature built in.
Never had to dl this patch for it to work.
The regular fw updates probably also will incl this facility.
That's why it is one of the better media players around. thumbup.gif

The reason I get NMT is to eliminate Disc base playback which is troublesome. HDD is dirt cheap nowadays. If you keep m2ts file, it's only 20Gb - 40Gb per movie. Also, I prefer to play the movie directly without going through all trailers and FBI warning.

Anyway, why you guys get a Dune for blu-ray playback? If I use disc based playback, I would choose Oppo or region hack blu-ray player.

As for DVDFab ripping using Core i5 4 core processor is not that long. I try to clone copy a blu-ray disc to strip off all copy protection and region coding, took me around 25 mins using Core i5 750 overclock to 3.9Ghz.

My Base 3.0 came with the region change feature built in.
Never had to dl this patch for it to work.
The regular fw updates probably also will incl this facility.
That's why it is one of the better media players around. thumbup.gif

those who bought from elife would have the region patch pre-installed wink.gif

can't change the region on the Dune D1. The unit was bought from Czone, I believe one of the authorised dealers. Anyway around this? Tried the region patch also doesn't work.

for ripping the speed is dependent on the BD drive lor.. no need 3.9GHz processor. even low end cheapo E5200 can give you 30min rip times. if your BD drive is fast.. . biggrin.gif

Anyway, anyone knows how to set the power management features of a WDGreen?....this hardisk is so suck that it even sleeps when I'm doing mass copying!
Lucky got them cheap...but one had too many bad clusters...got a replacement... but still its difficult to detect, sometimes sleep and slow.
Seriously not recommended unless using it inside a computer.

Never had problems with this using a Samsung.

The unit is so pathetic, only comes with 256MB of memory. Adding an external memory would be a 'must' then.
Does this 8670 chipset support 3D?

That is the lower end chip right ? compared to 8642 ? I'm wondering why those cheaper sigma chip like 8654 in WDTV support gigabit while higher end 8642 does not.

So far I've never experience anything like that.

Try:
-Another HDD..dun tell me you got one only laugh.gif
-Make sure the Dune got proper ventilation, but i doubt this got anything to do with it.
-Downgrade firmware, then try a few movies...if OK, upgrade again.
-Check all cables are properly connected.

I thought need wired connection for stutter free streaming.
Was thinking of Synology NAS too, but since I only watch on big screen now, multiple 4 bay docks will suffice.

actually can use the Dune (with internal HDD) as an indexer.
With your HDD with specific name connected to the dune, it can get all the info if you are using Zappiti / yaDis / MyMovies.
But I'm to lazy to do that...just use the external HDD bays, with my DUO, I already have 10 HDD connected and +1 spare USB port tongue.gif

I use a Synology NAS as a download manager as well so that I don't have to keep my PC on 24/7, reduces my electricity bill by a large margin.

I'm not so familiar with the Dune, but I understand you can access content on the Synology via NFS or SMB shared folders, as well as the builtin DLNA media server on the Synology. You can also install Twonky on the Synology as well. I use SMB shares with my WDTV Live for all my content - works well, including streaming BD remux titles over 100Mbps LAN.

Synology NAS is compatible to certain Denon/Onkyo networked avr however you still need a PC to manage or control your playlist and files. http://www.synology.com/support/faq_show.p...id=298&lang=enu

I'm streaming lossless music file to an Int. Amp in WIFI connection using Synology NAS.
I'd suggest to add Squeezebox [or costly Sonos] if SQ is matter to you since you have dedicated HIFI gear rather than streaming music to an avr.
Synology NAS has built-in squeezebox server so you don't need a PC to manage your playlist anymore. There're plenty more advantages & flexibilities using Squeezebox.
http://www.synology.com/apps/packages.php?lang=enu

I also have a Dune HD Max but never tried to stream video using Synology NAS coz it's only a 2-bay model. Like other said, it's costly to me for video storage using NAS.

Tks a lot, ADJ & m-sport.

Since today is rest day. I'll do more reading on it.

My intention is to connect it to my Dune as well as trying out streaming to my hi-fi. To kill 2 audio birds with a NAS stone.

Just want to get my hands 'dirty' and experience it since the curiosity gets better of me. Not going to have a massive video storage under NAS. More likely will be hi-rez music files (browsing Linn web) as our NSAG would like to know (and see) about it.

I am planning to do that for the upcoming audio show (6 mths down the road) for my hi-fi.

me follows this thread with great interest...

i now have my music files on my PC...my squeezebox is hooked up to the HT in the other room and i feed my music files to the squeezebox via networked homeplugs. works like a charm...

problem with this setup is that the PC MUST be on to be running squeezebox server...

i too am exploring a synology/qnap solution to carry all my music as well as movies to feed my squeezebox and my media player(s)...

Currently have the video media spread over: 3 x 1.5TB, 7 x 2TB, 1 x 1TB.... oh man.. those multibay NAS solutions are exp $3xxx+ sad.gif

oops edit... the 12 bay one pictured below is in fact $5000 tongue.gif

The Squeezebox is quite good. I have a cust who is using it too along with his Bladelius Embla.

I would not want to switch on my PC in order to use it. That's why I am thinking of Synology NAS. Perhaps will start off with the basic unit first before going for the many multiple bay NAS. I already have the Sonos controlled by iPhone. Now, thinking to add AirPort Express to it.

Is it true?
This will prove a cheaper option than an expensive multibay synology.

I once was told you can add external docks to the synology .
Is it true?
This will prove a cheaper option than an expensive multibay synology.

yes and no - the expansion units only work with selected NAS models:

suggest taking Synology/NAS discussion to another/new thread to avoid derailing this dune thread? smile.gif

Better stick it here for now as I want to know how well it works with Dune and how to go about it as I am a complete 'noob' when it comes to IT. Pardon my ignorance. Uncle is like that.

I can't contribute to this thread as I don't have a Dune, only WDTV Live. However, i can help if you have any questions on QNAP NAS as I have a TS-209, TS-409 and TS-412.

The Dune supports SMB and uPnP. Question : how do we actually 'sync' it with NAS? I suppose that we need to config the NAS via pc first in order to partner it with Dune. Sorry, uncle does not know a lot of IT jargon. Jagung, ok.

I have already able to get my Dune to connect wirelessly.

TIA.

htkaki, here's a quick overview about using a NAS.

if you use a sharkoon/hotway 4 bay storage device, and connect it via USB to your media player, you will see a list of folders, files etc. you will then navigate it via our media player, and then play your files accordingly.

a NAS is similar, but it is like a mini PC. It has a processor, memory, and runs on it's own OS. You will need a PC to access the web UI of the NAS to configure/manage it. Since it has an OS, there are also applications like media servers, web servers, download managers etc. It is also more energy efficient than using a PC to do all this on a 24/7 basis.

using a NAS is similar to the external USB storage, only that it is connected via networking instead, usually wired. Instead of it being local files, it would then be on a network shared folder. There are 2 kinds of network shared folders, SMB and NFS. NFS offers better performance, but you will need to enable it on your NAS, and your media player needs to support it. I believe the Dune supports NFS (WDTV Live does not). Once you have connected to the folder, you just browse and play the content, no problem.

you can also access the NAS content if it has a DLNA media server application on it, and if your media player is also a DLNA media renderer, which I believe the Dune is capable of doing so. There are advantages to this, such as creating a media library, tags, etc. Synology has a simple DLNA server app, but you can also install 3rd party DLNA server apps like Twonky. I believe bro terranova is more knowledgeable in this.

one cool thing I can do with my NAS and WDTV Live is using an iPhone app called ZappoTV. I can use my iPhone to browse my DLNA media library, and then select the movie/song I wish to play, and "ask" the WDTV to start playing it. Quite cool smile.gif

hope this helps ya

I have a 4 bay Hotway. Itchy butt to try out NAS. Need to read through the Dune manual again to understand it better.

The Dune has its own app for iPhone. It's a basic remote just like the Denon app. Once I get it works out, time for CAS and a better DAC.

In my case, I have a NAS server (powered by a Solaris 11 PC) running mediatomb uPnP server. the mediatomb uPnP is a media server that able to stream audio and video to DLNA compatible player.

My Yamaha V2067 is certified with DLNA, so I just use my Yamaha iPhone apps to remote connect V2067 to mediatomb media server and I can play FLAC music to my amp.

Htkaki, your Denon 4310 is able to play FLAC or wave format music from UPNP media server, and Synology Diskstation has builtin DLNA/uPNP capable media server, so I believe you don't need the Dune HD to play music, just use your Denon 4310 directly play music (either WAV or FLAC format) from the synology diskstation.

Tks a lot for the tips smile.gif

When the time comes, maybe I need to invite you over. Yes, I must admit that my 4311 is under utilised. Never use it as a network player until recently. Perhaps I have spent too much time on hi-fi lately.

I am also thinking of using NAS for my hi-fi. For that I need to get a better DAC (with Async USB) to replace my Wadia. How exactly it will be connected with what equipment.... I seriously do not know yet for now (opening wallet and checking bank acc sweat.gif )

if you are coming from a music perspective and intend to use a DAC, and onwards to your pre/power, the upcoming w4s music server might be good - https://audiofest.net/2011/downloads/Special/WyredR.pdf

Dejavu... LOL..

Was reading it yesterday :

I am also quite curious with this :

http://www.aprilmusic.com/eng/main/sub02_03_05.html

Just bought a Samsung Tablet 10.1 for my son (why not iPad2? Coz I got it at very cheap price). Now, thinking of 'messing' with it too.

Streaming from NAS direct into yr 4311 using DLNA is the simplest way to go but it leaves no room for DAC. Agreed with ADJ, you end up need a music server if DAC is in your plan. That comes NAS > MUSIC SERVER > DAC > PRE/POWER. Finding a powerful yet user-friendly music server is the most essential part out of the others by considering your requirements. Once you've determined your music server, just find a compatible NAS to work with it at ease becasue eventually you don't work with the NAS but mainly the music server thingy for music playback. Since you have a Sonos and I'm sure it's 100 times better than Dune to act as a music server so why not give it a try with a compatible NAS such as Buffalo?

bro...we are in EXACTLY the same boat now... using hotway 4-bays..but feel the need of more flexibility and scalability with a NAS
am considering purchasing a Dune Max this weekend for my main HT use and delegating (not relegating) my Dvico6600 to for bedroom duties...

Then one NAS to feed the Dune, my bedroom dvico6600 and another dvico6600 in my dad's room, my squeezebox touch, my home PC... wonder hows the performance spreading over several points...

Wah, simultaneous multitasking not only bandwidth dependent but also depends on the NAS's processor. Look for a higher spec processor otherwise your NAS get high blood pressure.. laugh.gif

unless you are in a high traffic office/enterprise environment, you won't need a very high powered processor based system. The only time when my NAS slows down is when I run multiple simultaneous password-RAR extractions, and that is also with my ancient 2007 Synology NAS.

Newer NAS like the DS411j should be enough for normal media streaming, if not then go straight to DS1511+ for expandability. A friend of mine has a DS1511+ and DX510 setup for his many-many-many seasons of HD English and TVB dramas, BD-ISO rips and WAV/FLACs smile.gif

I have DAC now but planning to get a better DAC.

I am thinking NAS >
1. Music Server > DAC > Krell pre/power (going to upgrade)
2. media player > 4311

Sonos is easy to play with. Simple with iPhone. Can listen to so many diff stations worldwide easily.

very good post and explains it really well.

just one more point to add .... another advantage of running a NAS as opposed to running a hdd usb-bay is that you can run a RAID configuration for the hdd in a NAS. this means you can have a hard disk failure (physical hard disk damage) but yet your data will still survive the crash. this may not be so important for htkaki if all you are storing is just media files .... but when you have thousands of it stored on the hard disk, you surely dont want to go thru the hassle of re-ripping everything and tagging and organise and album art them all over again, now do u? more importantly, if you're using the NAS to store invaluable data e.g. family photos, home videos of your kids, your pRon collection, etc. then having a RAID config may give you more peace of mind.

good point too! I run mine in RAID 1 mirror since mine is only a 2 bay NAS. Reason I didn't mention this earlier was because some external USB/eSATA boxes also have RAID, like this 5-bay Sharkoon unit which you can get from lowyat, so I thought it wasn't a feature exclusive to NAS boxes

Hi
I am using Dune HD Max player connected to Synology NAS for streaming HD Videos.
You can connect both very easy through NFS which is faster than SMB or UPnP.
And you don't need a computer for that.
Thanks.

I have tried changing the skins, but the color is still the same.
Anyone experienced this?

No particular error message as the Kick Ass BD-ISO just hang at menu loading.. I also experience some other m2ts or BDMV without sound also but the HiMedia realtek R1055 based player can pass through the HD audio to my AVR. My HD Dune Smart D1 running the latest firmware tho..

Guys,

I have just tested the Dune Smart D1 recently and updated the new firmware to the latest version....previously i have ben using the Dvico 4100 player....apart from better support for files....i notice 2 things about this player when compare to the DVICO:

1. the HDMI out audio has slightly higher detail but it sound kind of hollow (very thin) souding. When i watch celine dion and david foster: hitman, the spectators hand clap is very thin and doesnt have any body. i thought it would just output the digital audio and any player should sound the same? Any of you experience this?

2. When i tried to play some OGM files, the unit can detect it and play but it will just hang there....need to restart the unit.

3. HDMI output has been set to 8 bit but when i tried using 10 of 12 bit, the image will show very weird color....the HDMi will pass through the my Denon 3311 amp....

I am planning to replace my DVICO. Dune is a very nice player but somehow i do not quite like the audio quality of the unit..... is there some setting that could improve the audio output of the player?

Hi,

I have a smart d1. Been encountering a few issues with playback.

If an AVI file is paused until the screensaver appears...by resuming movie, it will auto stop.

But for MKV movies, paused and after screensaver appear the movie will be out of sync with audio.

Latest firmware: 110606_1315

Anyone seen this problem?

Try to identify which is the problem....media player, cable, docker or hardisk.

Try another hardisk

Got this mail from Dune for their upcoming booth at CES. Kinda disappointing as there is no news on midrange products, and no more news on the "upgrades" for the Max, Duo, Smart series either:

CES Invitation and Best Wishes for 2012

QUOTE
Greetings!
I am writing to wish you a fabulous and blessed holiday season and best wishes for 2012.  It is hard to believe 2011 is coming to a close, as marked by the Consumer Electronics Show which is now less than a month away.

Since last year, I have been working with Dune HD GmbH, one of the worlds leading digital media player manufacturers- guiding technology, content, and channel development efforts in the US.

As a result, we are preparing for Dune HD's biggest CES show yet, and I would like to invite you to stop by the booth January 10-13 so we can catch up.

A few of the highlights for Dune HD will include:

++ Dune HD Pro Reference level Universal Media Player
2012 CES Innovations Award Nominee & Winner

++ Dune HD TV-101 IPTV / OTT Hybrid Media Player
Perfect for Ethnic Content Operators, IPTV & VOD Service Providers, Mass Retailers

++ Technology & Content Partnerships
THX, Control4 and VUDU

Dune HD's booth will be located in the South Hall Level 1 #21445

Have a great holiday season and blessed start to 2012.  I look forward to seeing you at CES, and sincerely hope our paths continue to intersect.

Best regards,

Mark Donnigan

OK i finally just bought a Dune HD Max

as expected im having a few problems that i hope someone on here will be kind enough to help me fix

first off, after approx. 15 mins of playing a disc my tv screen goes black and sound mutes for about 2 seconds, the same as if a hdmi refreshes, but the cable is in securely. i have the video display set to auto, no upscaling or anything, as i let my denon receiver do the upscaling

secondly, i bought this to replace my sony bdp s380 player for watching blu rays but the picture just doesnt seem to be as sharp despite me using the exact same hdmi cable. motion is fine but there seems to be aliasing or jittering of some objects at certain times in the centre of the screen

i'm hoping someone can help as i really dont want to have to sell or send this back as its something i have wanted for a very long time. any hints or tips on how to get the best out of this device would be much appreciated

Hi Owen, I'd suggest to upgrade the firmware to the latest and try all again. Personally I also agreed with u tat the image sharpness is inferior when I'm comparing it with Dvico. I use PS Audio power cord and it does improve the image sharpness significantly over a 92" white screen. Hope it helps..

a few thing you can do to identify the problem

1) the HDMI cable - try to use a dif one and see the prob persist?

2) the source - are you using the bluray drive or the hard disk to play. If it is the bluray drive, try to rip the bd and play using hard disk and see whther problem persist?

3) alternatively let me know which movie and which scene - i will try to test on my unit

4) lastly - go back to the whichever shop you bought it from (for record, owen didnt purchase this from me) and test the same movie on their other dune max and see if problem persist

If your Dune D1 was connected to internet, it can auto check for the latest version firmware. Else, you can always download the latest version from http://dune-hd.com/firmware/hdsmart_d1/

Copy the latest firmware to USB drive root and upgrade from there..

You mean:
1. Download firmware to USB tumbdrive
2. Plug thumbdrive to Dune
3. And then?.....

I am not interested in any Beta version and there are so many version listed. Which version should I go for?

WOW.. you really need step by step guide..

3. Sources -> USB Storage -> Downloaded firmware
4. Press ENTER
5. Select 'Upgrade' and press ENTER

If you're not interested with the BETA, then just choose the latest non BETA which's Version "110606_1315_update1" (the latest stable version)

Version "110923_1710" apparently also a stable version but it wasn't released for D1. If you want to know, the 1st 6 digit represent the firmwareware release date.

I think it's better for you to specify what camera that you use to take the video as different camera do have their audio codec(usually aac format) and usually computer won't have problem to playback the audio from your MOV video taken using camera as the codec was installed.

Your setup is important too as sifus can try to assist based on your setup. I mean if your Done D1 connected directly to TV or AVR. It could be your audio output setting or capability of your AVR or TV

As I mention above, the MOV file most of the time using aac audio codec. If D1 connect direct to TV and audio out was set as raw, I think it might be the TV won't be able to decode the aac format. I'm just guessing as I don't know your TV model. Can always try to change the audi setting on you D1 to decode to LPCM and see if it does help..

Life is too short for me. I love to watch movies but can't spend too much hours in front of the idiot box.

Sometimes on PC, I watched movies with increased speed, say 1.5X to 1.7X so that I can finished the movie during lunch-time.

Does any media players has such feature?

With Cinavia creeping in, not sure how the new media players are going to fare. There is no talk from Dune about Cinavia.

Oppo's new player willl be cinavia compliant.

Sigma's new 3D chipset mentions about improved DRM. Might need to hold on to our older Dunes and Oppo's for now. Realtek solution that is not AACs licensed might be the future for now unless something changes.

Maybe Dune will embrace Cinavia officially and at the same time will relaese a "private 3rd party" patch to remove it, just like the region free patch.

the studios can't do anything to Dune as the patch is from "unofficial developer" tongue.gif

best is to link the Dune to a network, so you can choose which firmware you wanna update...

If you have problem (first time i heard this), update to a latest version which is NOT BETA...try it out first

I have a Dune HD Smart B1 and am running the latest firmware-

Can anyone tell me how (step by step) on how to easily import custom graphics to do a custom skin. I am wanting to do movie cover art and music cover art along with changing the background to a custom graphic. I am very good at designing my own custom graphics or altering others via Gimp Shop. I just need to know how to get them into the Dune to replace the factory GUI. I am reading all my movies and music off of a Toshiba 2TB drive. I have tried to make sense out of the Dune web support page talking about how to do this, but I am confused. Help!!!

These are what I do:

goto http://www.tvixie.com/ and download the software.

Start Tvixie and choose Dune as Option and right click to get movie info; must use exact movie name.
Once done i.e. you have obtain couple of those, goto program files\tvixie\ templates\movie directory and you'll find the jpg files there.
jpg files could be replace with your customised file here at "1920x1080 resolution"

To display a jpg file on your screen, you may customised dune_folder e.g.
from .folder.aai to folder.jpg or .tvix.aai to tvix.jpg etc. and the screen will show jpg instead of aai file.
You may even customised how many rows / columns to show on the screen
e.g. to show photo thumbnails on screen, you must change dune.folder to show jpg instead of aai.

using notepad to edit dune_folder file:
icon_path=folder.jpg (default will be .folder.aai)
icon_valign=center
use_icon_view=yes
background_path=tvix.jpg (default will be .tvix.aai)
paint_scrollbar=no
paint_icon_selection_box=no
paint_icons=no
paint_content_box_background=no
num_cols=1
num_rows=1

another configuration for dune_folder:
icon_path = .Icon.aai
icon_valign = center
use_icon_view = yes
num_cols = 6
num_rows = 2
icon_top = 15
icon_bottom = 0
caption_font_size = small
text_bottom = 0

aai file is the culprit but there is a tool to convert aai file to png and then to jpg but I'll leave it to your own discovery.

What kind of HD did you use?

I have heard 7200 rpm and more tends to generate too much heat.

Someone has reported OPPO 93 playing ISO files is far more superior in both AQ & SQ than Dune media. Even surround effects are more pronounced.

Max, have u made direct comparison between the duo? Have you jumped the boat? The temptation is hard to resist :-)

Anfield mentioned somewhere that the old firmware can be rolled back on an Oppo that is installed with a region-free kit.

i just got a Dune D1 and i am very happy with audio and video quality but i problems playing back BMDV (m2ts) files.

i have upgraded the firmware and even tried the beta firmware but the result is still the same. I have The Avengers and Avatar but i cant seems to be able to play the movie properly. When i select the file, it will load disc but it will be stuck at 0000. if i select the "lite" player, i can play but it will stop after 8-10 minutes.

i have another unit of xtreamer but i dont have any problem playing back these files.

Anyone encounter this problem?

I think you should try change your audio setting to PCM from RAW or passthrough. Just suggestion.

Dune D1 user. Just watched Madagascar 3d on1080p mkv file. I believe its is Half SBS (whatever that means). THis played perfect.
However when i played "How to train a dragon" on 3d 1080p mkv full sbs, I got a black screen with subtitles, and audio.
On "tangled" 3d on 1080p mkv (half sbs), the video was "compressed" to a about 4 inches in the middle of the screen.

Anyone with explanations? Appreciate any tips.
Thanks.

Can your dune access internet? youtube? get firmware update? or even weather report?

If player not pingable could be network issue, try plug a notebook on the same port see if you can access internet.

I just install Synology NAS 209+II in my house, my dune connect via NFS, did not try SMB, think your pc sharing are using SMB. Maybe you can enable NFS service on your pc and share it out after your sort out your network problem.

Want to ask whether the settings;

Auto Framerate set to 24/50/60 or DISABLED will make any diff if its connected to my PANA 50ST50?

Also does the HDMI Color Depth from 8bit to 12bit makes any diff?

Can you DUNE veterans share your opinion please?

I heard that the current available players do not play 3D ISO files, is this true?

Secondly, would you consider waiting for the next range of models before taking the plunge in buying one? I have been eyeing the D1.

Any news on when the new models will be coming out?

Thank you all smile.gif

Currently I'm still using Dune HD Base 3.0. Been using for 3 years and it still serve me well.

Recently thinking to upgrade to a better 3D player as my current 3D player cannot really play ISO file.

Any news on the new 3D player from Dune?

It's not necessary to have shorter name but both mkv and subtitle should have same name right?

Yes. Both files are same name but still cannot detect the external subtitles especially the srt format. No problem for my bd1.
Example :
The.Avengers.2012.BluRay.720p.DTS.x264-CHD (Movie)
The.Avengers.2012.BluRay.720p.DTS.x264-CHD.eng (Subtitle)

I would rename them to both same name

The.Avengers.2012.BluRay.720p.DTS.x264-CHD.mkv
The.Avengers.2012.BluRay.720p.DTS.x264-CHD.srt

That should work.

Some mkv without srt embeded can't detect external srt files.
You can try embed srt in mkv file by use mkvtoolnix. This should works

Hi azbro,

1) you need to wire up your dune(connect to router via LAN).

2) this is important, MAKE SURE YOU UNINSTALL windows live in your laptop. THIS IS A MUST or else DUNE will not be able to "see" your laptop workgroup.

3) create a folder and share it to "everyone". then dump all movies and music into that folder.

4) make sure also that under advance sharing you disable password protect for sharing as this may not work well with dune.

5) in dune, go to network, workgroup, look for your laptop, and you should be able to stream from you laptop.

just my 2 cents..

p/s: been streaming all my movies including full bluray for 2 years.. it works fine.

Hi there

Firstly...thx for helping

1)Dune is wired up, but laptop is wireless, will not be streaming movies...only pictures

2)I dun think got Windows Live in my Laptop...anyway, its a Windows7 (without the Live thing...I think) I'm using now.

3)I tried to do it on another partition Drive, it didn't work, so now I've added the folder into my Primary Drive

4)OK, did that, Off all the password this in the password network settings

5)OK..now trying, will update later

TQ

Can the Dune properly plays MKV video file muxed with HD audio?

I have a few MKV with 7.1 DTS HD MA audio. Surprisingly, my Sony Bluray player can't even play the file. (normal MKV with DD/DTS 5.1 plays fine though). My old Realtek 1073DD player plays the MKV but only plays the core lossy 5.1 track (it's the old chipset limitation). These players (in passthrough bitstream) are connected to my Denon 3312 AVR.

Therefore, I am planning to get myself a new player, either Sigma player like Dune or a Realtek 1186 player. Does Sigma really outshine Realtek in video upscale quality? Generally, rock stability system & ease of use with proper MKV+HD audio support is my priority. Having folder art view with nice info function is a plus.

Anyone can help?

The video is HSBS format and this cause the subtitle (.srt) to only appear on one side. Is there any tool to convert .srt for 3D? Tried 3D-Subtitler but could not get it to work.

FYI, the LG TV is using passive 3D technology.

Thanks in advance

Mine ok. Is all your movies at one folder? You can't put movies in difference folders.

What kind of 3D format can this player play? ISO, blu ray etc?

I still new to 3D and no idea about 3D.

There's posting somewhere along this thread mentioned how to apply patch to enable region change for Dune and how to change the region to match the BD-ISO file.. Can't recall where but you just have to read through..

Currently, I have a Samsung LED Smart TV. and I can view Youtube, webbrowsing etc from the TV. I can also play DVDrip/BDrip/Mp3 etc by plugging in pendrive into my TV.

If I use Dune HD 303D, will the audio/video quality better?
What other things can 303D do more than my current TV pls?

Do you need 5.1 / 7.1 audio? Do you need HD audio? If yes, get a Dune.

It only supports BD Lite menu.

The user interface is simpler now which reminds me of AC Ryan. Still, I prefer the older Dune interface. Having said that, it is still user friendly as the older Dune unlike HiMidea 910 and the Xtreamer 3D ver that I am going to chuck away.

Yesterday tested my boss's unit with normal projector, can feel the graphics is improve and better than my previous unit and the built is really solid. I still prefer the old unit interface... maybe oredi get used.

I bought another unit from China which is using Marvell chipset. Last nite tested with my Onkyo 608 and Sharp TV in my room with 2.1 speaker setup, the 3D effect is awesome, very satisfy. and it support BD 2.0 Full menu navigation. For sound, only test during this weekend with LX56.

Now planning to buy another unit for living room, either Dune or the China brand. Now waiting my bos to compare the 2 unit, coz he bought the same unit of china brand with me together.

Heard Sigma chipset is better in video/audio quality vs. Realtek, betul ?

Dune 303D is 3D capable, if my MKV/m2ts files is normal bluray file (non 3D), can it play well?

Setup 1:
MKV or m2ts file in harddisk, harddisk connect to Smart LED TV USB input, TV sound optical output to AVR optical input.

Setup 2:
MKV or m2ts file in harddisk, harddisk connect to Media Player using USB, Media Player connect to AVR using HDMI, AVR connect to Smart LED TV using HDMI.

Will there be noticeable improvement in video or audio between Setup 1 and Setup 2 ?

Pls help give opinion/view.

I can't seem to see any shared folders in the smb folder. From dune site, it say to create a network folder but i do not have this option in tv-303d.
Anyone can help ?

To manually configure a new network folder (i.e. to connect a network drive to the player):

Enter the Main screen (root folder of the file browser).

Execute the "New Network Folder" action in the context menu.

In the appearing window, assign network folder parameters.

Certain mov files can be played.
Apple trailers in mov can be played from my dune tv303d.
I also have some mov (old game trailers that I've got from PC magazines) which cannot be played.

After a good search at MPC forums, I solved the mystery of the no sound...believe it or not, the volume was set to -45 for the new updates, thats why no sound. I set it back to 0. Now all got sound. Funny thing is AC3 and DTS not effected by this volume. Only stereo.

Since I never used the Dune remote, cos using universal programmable remote which I program to divert the signal volume from the Dune to the AVR, that why I never realize this.

AC3 and DTS are encoded signals. If you bitstream to the AVR, then it's the AVR that is controlling the sound volume after decoding. That's why you have sound.

Stereo PCM on the other hand is not encoded, so the volume can be controlled by both the media player and/or the AVR. If either one sets it to very low levels you won't get any sound of course.

*
Yeah but at least they should have set the volume to middle after every firmware update, some firmware update the set it to 0, some they set it to -45

Some ppl will never use the dune volume controls or the remote, because we use a universal remote and program it to the AVR volume instead

You were saying "Funny thing is AC3 and DTS not effected by this volume. Only stereo.", so I am just explaining why that is so, nothing more , nothing less. I don't even own a Dune.

Anyone know a place to repair Dune BD 3.0? Bought it so long ago when it first came out and don't remember where I got it from already. It won't turn on, I reckon something is wrong with the power supply unit inside.

I recently got a Dune HD Base 3D but having problem to connect it with my home wifi network (Maxis Fibre).
Under Setup... Network.. Select Wireless (wifi)...Auto (DHCP)
Then select the SSID and keyin wifi password .... but still cannot connect.. "waiting for IP address"
Hope somebody can help to point out if I miss anything.

Moved to upstairs and connect using ethernet cable and it works fine. Upgrade to latest firmware and can access/play all functionseg. Dune store, weather, youtube, network shared drive. But when disconnect, still cannot log on to wifi. As I want to use this at downstairs hall without dragging cable all the way down.
Any suggestions?

You can try using those electrical wall plug for network.

The WiFi issue probably due to the WiFi chipset compability issue

Thanks sonyman.
I bought a pair of Aztech powerline adapter (Rm120), plug it in and connect using ethernet cable. Works fine now.

Few examples below ( Android box cum Media player)

Himedia q5 pro (400-500/-)/q10 pro (500-600/-) HiSilicon

Zidoo X9S (500-600/-). Realtek

Egreat A10 same chipset as Q10 pro (slightly above 1k/- ).

All above FW update of full BD menus improvements still ongoing. But most iso/Bdmv can display full menus ( not 100 % though). But 4k BD menus I haven't tried that many yet.

Btw, even 3d full menus supported.

Me too plan to change my dune if find same or better output video quality player, it still working good. Surprisingly they did firmware upgrade last year. And this unit used since 2011.

Any recommendation for media player same or better performance with dune? I try few Android (China brand) but the video output quality not as good as Dune (same file)

Thanks for the respond.......Dune HD Pro 4k ultra not in market yet I think any seller here? I am only interested in 4k full bd playback with full bd menu, dolby atmos & dts-x pass through to av receiver other feature no important. Oppo 203 can play full menu? I like dune as all my collection is in dune album art. 4k collection still in 'raw' form.

I use the dune setup to check. It will show the available firmware for download, I use their beta firmware. So far so good, it managed to add support of some encoding earlier not supported.

Just wondering if anyone had successfully get it work before? Im using windows 10 btw. Already set fixed ip for both pc and dune, and yes both are to go online also.

Hi,

I have a Dune D1 and problem with remote control commands.
When I activate Dune via the on / off button, I can connect using the remote control power on command.
But, from that moment, no command is recognized, not even disconnect with power off.
I found out that I can use the app on my smartphone, as Dune receives an IP, and that's how I'm currently using it.

But I would like to return to using the remote control normally.

Does anyone know what may be happening?

I have tried several versions of firmware and nothing has changed.

Sorry for my English, but I'm Brazilian and I used Translator.

Tks.
