I'm planning to get a car (most likely Forte 1.6 or 2.0) before CNY (in January 2012 doh.gif)

Like to get some opinion on purchasing a car in last quarter of the year.

Pros:
- There are some quite attractive offerings now (check myforteclub brows.gif )
- Much much better chance to get the car before CNY

Cons:
- The car will be one year old in the next 2 months.
I'm purchasing the car with no trade-in. So the concern of servicing the installment for current car does not exist.

What do you think?
I'm still torn apart in selecting 1.6 or 2.0.

What shared by gregy is really what been playing in my head EVERYDAY now!  rclxub.gif

If I'm going for 2.0, I will need to fork out around RM3.5k - RM4k extra every year. This amount of money is not small and could contribute to other more important stuffs (like new house expenses)... and not so important stuffs (like going for annual trips tongue.gif)

With 2.0, I get more power (fun factor), better safety measurements (other additional features not really that matter to me). But, I will get higher FC, higher commitment in servicing the loan, etc.

Anyway, for me, leather seat is a must. So if I am really going for 1.6, I will surely get it wrapped with leather. The SC has quoted me extra RM2K and can be bundled in the car loan. I think it's slightly more expensive though.

I am in the same situation as you.
1) dont know want to get the car now or wait jan 2012
2) havent decide 2.0sx or 1.6sx

However, i still waiting for good bonus news from my company .. hehe

Hi bro, I've also been mulling the idea of 16" wheels. One of my favs is the Enkei RPF-1. Some may not like it due to its short spokes but it has the looks of a serious performance wheel, plus it weighs very little, one of the most lightweight wheels you can find today. Costs a bomb though lol... There's also another 16" that I quite like, but very rare. The original 16" on the first batch of Honda Civic 2.0S. They are much nicer than the ones on the Civic 1.8. Very hard to find second hand in tyre shops.

If you like to change rims often you might want to consider Advanti also as they are quite light and affordable, but I dunno if they can last. However, if you go for 205-55-16 there should be more than enough rubber to cushion the impact and protect your wheels.

Actually, I've been trying to get some info on the "tyre to rim ratio" performance issue. Tyre weight makes up more than half the total weight of the wheel. A 215-45-17 tyre weighs around 10kg thereabouts while a 205-50-16 might be slightly more at 10.5kg or so. I was initially worried that the added weight of the higher profile 16" tyre would actually hurt performance as most of the tyre's weight is concentrated at the outermost part of the wheel's rotational axis.

Then that got me thinking, the closer you can bring rotational mass towards the axis (hub) the easier the wheel can turn. By switching over to 16s, you will in effect bring the rim closer to the centre (the heaviest part of the rim is the rim barrel itself and not the spokes/hub part) thus freeing up more horsies. Not to mention that 16" are generally about 1-2kg lighter than 17" (the same model of rim). Another small factor influencing pickup is tyre patch as a 205 tyre would have a smaller contact patch than a 215.

However, by reducing rim size (and reducing contact patch size) you are also increasing sidewall height which will compromise cornering ability. To this end, it would be advisable to select a tyre with a strong sidewall so as to minimize flexing during cornering.

I'm not so good with tyres so better for you to consult a tyre sifu smile.gif

TQVVM bro gregy for your huge effort to explain in details regarding my question. As what u have said, rims diameter will influence the rim's rotational inertia right? Less rotational inertia in smaller rims should free up more horses in which it is good for FC & performance. But 1 thing i just learnt from u, 215/45/17 tyre is lighter than the 205/55/16 tyre (for the same brand & model i presume)..correct right? All the while i thought it's more or less posses the same weight..lol. So it means that, if i change to 16" rims & tyres, the less weight that i got from the smaller rims will be offsetted by the heavier tyres. So in order to free up more horses, i need to find the 16" rims that are significantly less in weight (say 3-4kg per rim) so that the tyre extra weight will not entirely offset the reduced weight of the rims. True?

Since that i'm driving like uncle with defensive driving style & prefer more on comfort driving, compromising cornering ability due to higher sidewall is not my main concern. But i'm surely have to compromise on its braking ability & also its look in which i need to think twice sweat.gif

Normally, if you want a 2012 car you will need to wait until after Jan 2012 unless the car is so hot selling until no more stocks. Even then, since it is close to CNY there will be many ppl rushing to get their cars and those who booked earlier in 2011 will get their cars first.

Not to worry about the resale value la. Just push the SA for extra freebies, tell him you want to book and get the car from another SA, but if he can give you a better deal then you take from him loh. I'm sure he also wants more comm before CNY ma.

If you visit mudah.my regularly you will notice that there are cars with the tag "2010/2011". These cars will usually fetch a better price than a Jan 2010 model.

I just had a look and the 2010 Forte EX is around 61-65k. This is the older 4-sp version which is RM75,800 at launch. It also comes with only 2 yrs / 50,000km warranty. If you deduct the insurance from the OTR selling price:

RM75,800 - RM2,100 (based on RM74k sum insured) = RM73,700

RM73,700 - RM63,000 (average of 61k-65k) = RM10,700

WOW! Manyak untung leh! So little depreciation only! If you treat a 2010 car as one year old, the depreciation is only RM10,700. If you consider that 2011 is coming to an end soon, that is only RM5,350 depreciation per year. Isn't that something to shout about?

So who said that Korean cars depreciate like hell?

Aiyo, why wait till 2012.
I just approve by loan and sign agreement this morning. Lol.
Since kia have low second hand value.
I don't think I'm gonna sell it. Not really care about that one year.
Most important is, I do not intend to wait.
"Wait" will make me stress, tired, no energy to work and faint.
I just make up my mind in one week then straight buy it lo. LoL!!!

1.6 sx white. Will be releasing next week.
Getting from K.S. Loh from Serdang jaya.
Very good dealer.

Congrats on your new ride biggrin.gif

I'm also checking with Loh.

For me, I need to ensure that I understand the differences and the risk of purchasing the car in 2011 and 2012. This is my most expensive "liability" purchase tongue.gif

Back to the topic of 2011 vs 2012, any taker?

Adding on to this 2011 vs 2012 question, how do we count when the date starts? Car registration date?

Meaning, there's no sure-fire way of guaranteeing we'll get a 2012 car when bought in Jan 2012?
