The administration fee charged for all transaction made in foreign currency to Maybank VISA or MasterCard is now 1% instead of 0.5%.

Ooooh... that makes Maybankard Visa/MasterCard not good for forex transactions... on the hand, most CC also at 1%

I just booked a room through Agoda just now. All this while i kept asking everyone to choose USD as the billing currency but this time i wanted to try to be billed in MYR with the exchange rate determined by Agoda system. But it was a BIG mistake!

I did check the rate both in USD and MYR. The rate shown in USD is **USD123.43/night while in MYR, it is **RM376. The Agoda USD/MYR exchange rate is **USD1=RM3.0463 which is a very good rate considering the money changer in Mid-Valley (MV Forex) is selling USD1=RM3.045 as of yesterday. I have a credit card that gives me 7% off and i also redeemed 25000 Agoda Rewards Points (equivalent to USD50).

Anyway, the hotel tax rate is 7%. 3x nights = USD370.29. So USD370.29 + USD25.9203 (7% tax) = USD396.2103. But after factoring in the 25000 points i redeemed (worth USD50) and the 7% discount on base room rate from my credit card, the final payable amount in USD is USD320.29 only!

As i viewed the hotel room from the first page to the final confirmation page in MYR only, i was automatically billed in MYR and the amount billed to my card is RM1004.25. This means Agoda's USD/MYR
is USD1=RM3.1354!!! This is actually very very high! I have no idea how come the final exchange rate suddenly became so high because the initial exchange rate shown is actually very good (**refer to 2nd paragraph).

Anyway, the bottom line is, whenever you are booking a room through Agoda, always choose to view the room rate in USD and make sure you choose USD as the billing currency at the final checkout page.

I remember asking whether should I pay in MYR or local currency and you replied in USD. Unfortunately, I already made the bookings in MYR that time. Now dont wanna go back to calculate and feel the pain laugh.gif

(Gen-X, in his blog about Agoda, mentioned that he selected MYR so that dont have to worry about conversion rate tongue.gif)

Yeah. I have always insisted on selecting USD as the billing currency when booking a room on Agoda but cenduku said that Agoda's rate is better when he booked a room last month. Since i had to book a room and Agoda offered the lowest room rate for that hotel i wanted to book, i thought i'll give it a try as well. At first, it seems that cenduku was right. The Agoda's MYR rate does seem better (refer to my 2nd paragraph of my last reply). However, the exchange rate ballooned from USD1=RM3.0463 (this was the difference of USD/MYR when selecting the hotel) to USD1=RM3.1354 at the final checkout page. However, as i was viewing the price in MYR all the way, i did not notice this until i received the hotel voucher from Agoda vmad.gif

Speaking of bro Gen-X, he's been MIA for almost a month...

thanks miles for your try although it came out to be some cheating by Agoda. last time, i booked through Agoda and choose USD because of advice that was given so far. I note that the MYR exchange rate was lower but I assume the exchange rate using USD will be better. but it turn out otherwise. Now I understand this is just a gimmick by them...perhaps exchange rate before +/- forex fees.

Best is to try in both currencies like what Miles did and make a comparison.

With the changes to Maybank Visa/MC rate, I wonder if it is still lower than the rest. I will still stick with Maybank Visa for the moment.

(Bro Gen-X is probably away somewhere, on an exotic place with no internet connection )

Actually, it is totally fine to book an airline ticket with AMEX with the price displayed in MYR such as Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific etc. even when you are actually booking from overseas but through their local Malaysia website. Not sure what actually happened with your EVA Air booking last time but usually it's not a problem. I've paid for my Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific air tickets using AMEX through their respective local Malaysia website many times already and i was charged the exact amount quoted to me in MYR at time of booking.
