If you OC higher then you'll normally need extra voltage. Too much voltage would produce heat and in return might kill something in your PC.

brought gigabyte EP45-DQ6 with intel core 2 duo 2.66ghz processor

still fast. so don't need to OC for the time being. heard that window 7 will go faster than vista. so don't clock first... rclxm9.gif

Hi guys, if I increase the FSB but decrease the multiplier for the processor such that the overall speed is the same, is that still considered overclocking?

If you have a low-end C2D (45nm CPUs) and don't want to spend much $$ on aftermarket coolers, see if you can get a high-end C2Q stock cooler and use that instead. For example, I have a E7400, and I am using it with a Q9550 stock cooler (difference is that the Q9550 cooler is very slightly taller, has a round copper base instead of full aluminum, and a more powerful fan). I am currently running the E7400 @3.50GHz (10.5x333) which is a 25% overclock (+0.7GHz) at stock voltage, with full load temps of around 56-58C. This was my first attempt at overclocking this CPU too, and will be working to OC it further. Let's see if I can break 4GHz.

With so many people who buy the high-end C2Q CPUs practically throwing away their stock coolers to get better coolers like TRUE or Megahalems, this could be a very cheap way to get better cooling for your CPU at next to nothing (or even free).

I suggest dat u manually set your Vcore and run Prime95 to see the stability. Also monitor the temperature..

vcore alone is not enough.

there's nb,gtl and whole lot of other voltage setting to consider.plus ram speed, timing, ratio and voltage affect overclocking.

E7400 user reporting in.

If I use a stock cooler OC to 3.49Ghz (266 x 10.5) when I ran Prime95, my temperature can reach 90+ celcius!

I bought a Coolermaster Hyper TX2 cooler, rat the test again and the temperature only reaches 62 celcius.  rclxms.gif

But the idle temp for both stock and TX2 is quite the same. 42 celcius. sad.gif
*
I'm using the same processor and MB as yours. I have the same OC setting ( 333 x 10.5 = 3.49Ghz) as well because predictably I'm using 667mhz rams.
(I swap the stock cooler to after market coz my E7400 reached 96 Celsius when gaming. The max temps recommended by Intel is 74.1 C.) tongue.gif
BUT, the differences is in the temps. On load mine is max. 49 Celsius; on ilde is 30 Celsius. (load = Crysis on high settings)

I got myself Arctic Cooling Freezer Xtreme, market price @ RM200 but I bought it for only RM140 at C-zone sdn bhd. at Lowyat Plaza. (apparently their stocks of AC Freezer Xtreme are a little defected. So their selling it cheap. But for a cpu cooler, a little bent here and there is no big deal, mine I got a scratched top part and a bent little fin. with a good'old plyer, i fixed it like new less than 2 minutes) rclxms.gif

My point is that, if you had an extra RM40 plus the money u bought the CMH TX2, u could have bought the AC Freezer Xtreme, for sure you can get kinda the same temps as mine since we both use the same Mobo, rams and proc with similar OC settings. Anyways your load temps and your idle temp ain't too bad, but still the temp could go down a little, especially if someday you decide to get 800mhz rams and push the Ghz of the proc up to 4.0Ghz

Hope you find this info useful from another E7400 user icon_rolleyes.gif

all overclocked component need extra voltage, u forgot nb, ram and other things. and do not set the voltage to auto. the mobo tend to OVERvoltage the component too much try to make it stable.
