A little off-topic.

I'm getting a NAS for downloading (fyi to all unifi user, viewnet lowyat selling seagate blackarmor NAS for RM299 only).

Now i would like a gigabit network but apparently all my routers on hand is only 100 base. Lets say i do not want to change the routers, can i just get a gigabit switch, plug it into the router, and my PC(s)/NAS connected to the gigabit switch so they get local gigabit speed?
*
As long as your local network is gigabit, yes all local devices will get gigabit speeds within your own local network.

I'm searching for NAS also... but can't wait for Unifi installation this thursday.

If I gonna change the stock router to Asus or TPLink... then i decide next on NAS or just external HDD... :>

BTW, the NAS offered RM299 is 2 or 4 bays? have not cover the HDD yet. I might just take a good ext HDD with USB 3.0 and buy Asus RTN13U... Cost Cost Cost...

OT, but I suggest Synology NAS instead. The DSM Web-based UI is really awesome!

depend on how u setup the infra.

router -> PC -> Giga sw -> other appliances ( PC will run on 100base to router and 1G base to other appliances)

I almost bought Asus RT-16N a while back but after i read the review/tests on the read/write speed these all-in-one router delivers, i gave up.
the RM299 is single bay with 1TB HDD installed (Model BlackArmor NAS-110). There is however two more USB port that you can connect additional external HDD to it. Or you can go for 2 bay (Model: BlackArmor NAS-220) with 2TB HDD installed for RM649.
Hooking up a atom netbook that i dont use to be a download station, this would be my poor man's NAS.

HDD can be taken out. But that would void the warranty
DNS230 RM279 does not include HDD yet. I saw another single bay model DNS213 i think, going for RM99 only.

this setup require the PC to has 2x Gigabit port isn't it?
i'm thinking more like router -> Giga switch -> PC/appliances

I'm looking at the VIP 10 package but want a straight answer from TM about the download caps. I know they're not doing it now.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows what will/could happen if TM implements their monthly download limits and you go over them. I mean nothing is stopping them from implementing it the day after I sign up, Terms and Conditions Para 25. Variation, I imagine.

As I see it there are only two ways to handle it, money and/or speed. Charge X RM per X Unit over cap, or slow down connection as penalty. I just can't find anything. TM could, theoretically, charge outrageous fees (think Maxis pay per use RM0.10/10KB) RM700 seems a bit high a price for a DVD movie rip. They could go just as crazy on the speed side too, hit your cap...welcome to dial-up speeds (I can probably whistle 56K).

I know I'm being a bit over the top with that thought but my point is nothing is written down. Nothing is stopping them from doing it, heck they could just switch your connection till the next month.

Would I be able to get out of my contracts 24 month MSP if I don't like their terms? What other recourse do I have?

Rumoured to be HIT QUOTA=10% Speed. 20Mbps hit quota=2Mbps.

price: RM189 from C-Zone
For unifi: short answer is NO at the moment unless you go through the DIR615 is VLAN bridge. But as pointed out by klseet, Asus is coming out with a firmware that can natively support unifi but the firmware is still in Beta stage and not released to public yet.

my bad... yes router -> giga sw -> pc and others appliances

as long as PC and the appliances support gig then it will run on gig... else it will remain 100M, gig sw must be auto-sense.. or set the port speed manually, just in case something happen for auto sense.

finally installed unifi in my house.took them almost 3hours 30minutes to complete.they suppose manage to complete everything in 3 hours.but after tested everything, and i even signed on the agreement, they detected something wrong with the wiring and need to redo everything.lucky they are responsible enough to check on the wiring again.i didn't ask whats wrong but i assume that the wire is faulty because he mention something ' wire ni sensitive'
