alexwsk, zenquix and MilesAndMore, how about you guys "breaking" up the first post subjects into new threads.
MilesAndMore - can like open a thread on paying credit card bills online as suggested by wshoh. Which bank the best for online payment.
Now the problem is that you have to assume worst case scenario.
Likely they have the transaction recorded and you have consented to the charge - if not how do they get your cc information ?
This means even if you file for dispute ... there's a possibility the case will not favor you. Go to the police and the bank and they will produce the recording of you consenting to the charge. I'm using the term consenting as it does not necessarily require you to verbally absolutely say "Yes".
Last hope is that there might be a cooling off period. You can initiate the cooling off period and say no/cancel the transaction. If you have their contact info then please call back. (I am almost sure you don't have their contact no to cancel ... but if you do then please go all out to cancel) Now this will not definitely assure you of a resolution or solve the problem for sure. Likely ... they will create a hassle/fuss before you are able to cancel. (you might be even lucky if you get to cancel)
Next time please be smart ... never say yes right away to such products/services which they cold call you.
The problem has nothing to do whether you are a cc noob or not ... it's purely you are not thinking before you purchase anything. These guys capitalise of people's weakness on greed (discount, VIP status, etc) and impulse buying / lack of second thoughts before buying. The training to place the cold calls (even the script used when they call you) actually targets and capitalise on these weakness.
I don't mind getting blasted due to my statement above as ... let's face it. It's more or less the truth.
They will always say ... "I'm representing/calling on behalf of VISA/Mastercard International ... etc" They will proceed to ask for your credit card and you should say ... if you are my bank ... you know what card I am holding, what type and also my cc no. If they don't know all these information or feel you are on to them, they will drop the call by now. They are also trained to drop the call when the ball is not in their court and move on to the next number to cold call.
Hear the words they use "Representing .... VISA/Mastercard International". They can't say "I'm from VISA/Mastercard International" because then it is constituted as fraud and VISA/Mastercard can take legal / criminal actions against them. Next time anyone receives the call ... just compare notes with me and you'll understanda what am I talking about.
Anyone reading this ... please take it as lesson learnt.
** The only info the bank CS would not see is your CVV. They will also never ever ask you this question because they are not allowed to ask the customer.
I got a fake email claiming to be from MBB2 and just finnish my article on it. You are right, Banks. MasterCard, Visa and Bank NEgara Malaysia will never call us up. Once Chartis even called me claiming to be from EONBank and the CS got scolding from me for misleading me as I knew it wasn't EON Bank that called me. Another Chartis rep also said she from MasterCard and she also got scolding from me.
