As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Hi alien, I uploaded the Scholes Centurion video (a compilation of all 100 goals he scored throughout his career in Man United).

If it's allowed, I thought why not share with other forummers by posting the link in the first few posts. The link is : http://rapidshare.com/files/367460321/PS_Cntrn1x0.rar =)

Edit (08 Nov 2010): Looks like the link is no longer working (thx to sinoffire for notifying) so I reuploaded the video to a new link:

BTW, alien, I have reuploaded the Scholesy centurion on a couple of hosters. Feel free to add them to the first page.

We ourselves let's not get too cocky and sounds like we will definitely beat them and go to final. We know anything can happen in FA Cup.

Reading will be tricky for Man City with many of City players sideline with injuries plus with fatigue from the europa defeat to Dynamo Kiev. we can expect to face Man City but expect for a surprise too.

Honestly, I don't care who we play. I'm only hoping Edwin can get a retirement present of the FA Cup before he leaves. It's the one trophy he hasn't won before.

Guys, sorry if this has been posted before, but is it true?

QUOTE
United 'to sell Rooney

The paper claims that Rooney and Ferguson's relationship, already rocky following the striker's contract negotiations last autumn, has reached an all-time low in recent weeks - despite the fact that the 25-year-old has finally rediscovered his scoring touch.

The paper's source claims that, "relations between Rooney and Ferguson are so strained that it is affecting other players," adding that, "Sir Alex is not pleased with the way Rooney has been playing... Rooney has been moaning about the squad again but Sir Alex has told him he should look at himself before criticising others."

biasa la tuh bro.biar ja kat depa.when they say rooney moaning about the team from there its a no boner.yeah weve lost 2 big games but think again were still all 3 competition fighting for it.so suggesting him moaning about that is plain crazy...i might think the same if weve drawn or lost last night but since weve won it and against a big team and odd that he f***in scored...that just simply doesnt equate. tongue.gif

what's the story of Carrick and Fletcher? i guess they had a little niggles, not a serious injury.. hopefully they up for selection for tomorrow game..

international break come at the right moment this time..

Valencia can bid time for his fitness. Park, Nani, Anderson, Carrick, Evans, Ferdinand might fully recovered.. what a long list..

QUOTE
EMMANUEL PETIT has accused Arsenal's stars of 'cracking' under the strain of their Quadruple dream.
The club's ex-midfielder, who was part of the 1998 Double-winning side, is stunned Arsenal tumbled out of three competitions in just two weeks.

Petit, 40, who spent three years at Highbury, said: "There seems to be a curse around the club at the moment. Arsenal's key players seem to be cracking up.

"You get the impression that some psychological work will need to be done on Fabregas.

"His recent performances have been below his usual standard.

"He seems to have a complex regarding his former club Barcelona.

"I really hope Arsenal win the title because otherwise Arsene Wenger will have to ask himself questions.

"This pains me because I am an Arsenal fan.

"Over the last few seasons if there's a team that's deserved to win a title it's them because of the football they play.

Petit, a World Cup winner in 1998 with France, also played for Barcelona and Chelsea, so he knows a bit about winning.

And he believes Wenger's current side do not have the right mentality.

He said: "Wenger has gone in totally the opposite direction in the sense that, since 2005 and the departures of Vieira, Pires and company, he's banking above all on a young, malleable team where he can invest in a sporting project.

"Arsenal's game is a trademark on the pitch, it's just that there are not really any players with a winning mentality.

"Players are playing against their nature a bit. Barcelona play exceptional football, from the age of six, seven, eight in the academies of Barcelona they teach you to play the same way.

"That's not the case with Arsenal.

"Maybe that's been the case for a few years in the football academy but I notice there are players we've known for a long time who are playing against their nature.

"There are players who try to play a bit in the image of Fabregas, when they don't have the same qualities.

"Everyone has to bring something to the table, and that's what I find with this Arsenal team, that some players are playing against their nature."

yeah. that surely will happen. Ballotelli, Dzeko and Tevez surely will play. Silva will continue terrorising our midfield. hopefully Fletcher and Carrick will do well to track Tevez and Silva since both of them will drop deep.

Silva is a LW right.if Park is fit than he is more than capable to track/isolate silva

i'll leave Tevez to Rafael laugh.gif while Smalling/Vidic should be able to contain the other 2 turds(especially bolatelli.i'd love to see Vidic tackled him and he's flying in the sky)

The Marseille match is gonna be really tricky. We cant afford to concede at all. I really hope we get at least 1 goal by half time, even then it really wouldnt mean much as all they need is one goal too to qualify but we must really stifle them. I dont envy SAF who has to come up with the formation, tactical flow, and players for this huge game.

It very dangerous for home side to concede in the 2nd leg; we Devils had suffered pain of away goal rule in the past... remember Bayer Leverkusen in 01-02 and last year vs. Bayern?

It very dangerous for home side to concede in the 2nd leg; we Devils had suffered pain of away goal rule in the past... remember Bayer Leverkusen in 01-02 and last year vs. Bayern?

Sir Alex targets Atletico keeper De Gea as £15m replacement for retiring Van der Sar

Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/...l#ixzz1GYzEaKS5

QUOTE
Manchester United have decided they want David de Gea to replace Edwin van der Sar as their
first choice goalkeeper.

The move for a 20-year-old will be seen as a huge gamble, but United scouts and coaching staff are convinced the Atletico Madrid star can handle the responsibility.

Sir Alex Ferguson has watched De Gea extensively over the past year and hopes a £15million deal can be finalised quickly, and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele is laying the groundwork for his arrival by taking Spanish lessons.

Van der Sar, 40, reiterated his intention to quit at the end of this season after starring in the FA Cup win over Arsenal on Saturday, but United hope the multi-lingual Dutchman will take up a coaching role and help smooth the transition for his successor and new No 2 Anders Lindegaard.

United have studied various candidates to replace Van der Sar, with Schalke's Manuel Neuer, Julio Cesar of Inter Milan and Ajax keeper Maarten Stekelenburg all coming under consideration. However, De Gea has similar - if not better - qualities plus age on his side. At 6ft 3½in he is very much part of
Spain coach Vicente del Bosque's plans, despite the presence of Iker Casillas and Liverpool's Pepe Reina.

However, De Gea has similar - if not better - qualities plus ageDespite a rather unconventional attempt by Wayne Rooney to persuade him to reconsider, the Dutchman is adamant this season will be his last.

'I was just speaking to him in the shower,' said Rooney, who headed United's second after Fabio da Silva had scored in the first half.

'The players are trying to persuade him to stay on but it's his decision. Despite his age, he's still the best keeper in the world.'

Although Van der Sar can look back on a glittering career, the FA Cup is a notable omission from his cv.

He said: 'Of course an FA Cup winner's medal means a lot, despite what I have won. I've played one final and lost a semifinal. It has got away all the time, so hopefully this can be the one.

'It will be nice to finish at my peak. I don't hate retirement - I'm looking forward to it. Everybody doubts themselves. Every writer doubts himself, every artist doubts himself and every footballer does. That is what certain players thrive on.'

Ferguson's team selection, with the Da Silva twins and Rooney starting in midfield, underlined the injury problems at Old Trafford as well as the manager's priorities.

Even after defeats by Chelsea and Liverpool, Ferguson refused to jeopardise his Champions League chances by risking Ryan Giggs or Paul Scholes from the start. Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher are doubtful to face Marseille, with Nani, Rio Ferdinand, Anderson and Michael Owen all out.

Park Ji-sung could return but United's problems in midfield were not helped by a late cameo appearance from Scholes.

He picked up his 10th booking of the season and will miss the next two matches at home to FA Cup semi-finalists Bolton and away to West Ham.

Kuszczak will leave in summer if he fails to get first team spot. Neuer, Reina or De gea...i wouldnt mind whoever joins us tongue.gif

De gea's only 20. Means if he turn to be a success, he'll guard the goal post for another 20 years ? tongue.gif

Most of our young keeper unable to shine at OT… only when they been loan or sold to other club … hmm.. too bad… dont put too much hot on young keeper..~~

Still favor the mature ( old ) keeper like van der sar..

beating United is like winning lottery. If you didn't win, u just keep silent, throw the slip away and try again the next draw. If you win though, you will jump up and down and announce it to the whole world, everything else wouldnt matter anymore.

11:33 Here’s the 20-man squad that trained together at Carrington this morning. Owen Hargreaves and Ji-sung Park were also out on the pitch, working away from the main group. Goalkeepers: Tomasz Kuszczak, Edwin van der Sar; Defenders: Brown, Fabio, Evra, O’Shea, Rafael, Smalling; Midfielders: Bebe, Carrick, Gibson, Giggs, Nani, Obertan, Scholes, Valencia; Forwards: Berbatov, Hernandez, Owen, Rooney

so maybe nani for us ehh and park also there...well im not that sure but so is every one except the gaffer.he may or may not pull another one just like what we saw in teh fa cup biggrin.gif

but a more important thing then who starts 2moro is that we need to be on the goal early, 1 wont be enough so at least 2 up by the half time will do us good.

QUOTE
10:34 I'm down at Carrington and I'm pleased to report  Nani is training with the first-team ahead of United's Champions League clash with Marseille tomorrow night. Encouragingly, Owen Hargreaves is also training, although he's not part of the Reds' European squad and he's training away from the main group with some of the Reserves. I'm afraid Rio Ferdinand isn't anywhere to be seen, though. As for Ji-sung Park, he's doing some separate fitness work with one of the Reds' coaches. (AB)

Fergie waits on Hargreaves

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson is playing a 'wait and see' game as regards Owen Hargreaves' potential impact on Manchester United's run in.

The holding midfielder lasted just 10 minutes of his seasonal reappearance in November in the 2-1 win over Wolves, when he picked up a hamstring injury.

The 30-year-old was making his first start in over two years following surgery on both knees to cure a serious tendinitis problem.

After the latest injury, Hargreaves, who signed from Bayern Munich in 2007, returned to Germany for treatment but is now set to restart training on Monday.

But Ferguson does not know if he will be able to make an impact for the Red Devils at the business end of this season.

Missed him

The United boss told The People: "Yeah, we have missed him. He's a very good player but he's been missing so long.

"From what we're told he's coming back from Germany and he's going to start training on Monday with us so we'll wait and see.

"He's been a loss but there's nothing you can do about it. Up until the last couple of weeks we haven't really needed him.

"We've got a big strong squad with plenty of midfield players like Carrick, Anderson, Gibson, Scholes, Fletcher, Giggs who can play in there.

"We've had plenty of options in the middle of the park but we've coped OK. Antonio Valencia's been out for most of the season but Nani has progressed because of it. He's been terrific.

"Sometimes that happens. You lose a player and someone else steps up."

If he become a success that it certainly will benefit us like MAn City, Real MAdrid and Barcelona experience in Hart, Casillas and Valdes. Usually GK will take time to be a good one. most of them are late bloomers like howard and Friedel.

Wing men come to the rescue

QUOTE
Nani and Antonio Valencia could both play a key part in United’s Champions League second leg last 16 tie against Marseille at Old Trafford on Tuesday, while Michael Carrick and Nemanja Vidic should both be fit to play.

With a need to attack and score goals with the tie locked at 0-0 at the halfway point, Nani and Valencia’s fitness is a major boost to Sir Alex Ferguson. Nani was forced off in the defeat to Liverpool at Anfield with a deep gash on his shin following a terrible tackl from Jamie Carragher.

The Portuguese missed Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final win over Arsenal, but Valencia made his comeback in the match as a second-half substitute, six months after suffering a broken ankle and ligament damage against Rangers in September.

“There’s a good chance with Nani,” Sir Alex said. “He trained on Sunday, along with Carrick. That’s a better situation than we had at the weekend. Both will be involved on Tuesday night.

“It was a fantastic bonus for us to get 45 minutes out of Valencia against Arsenal. It was a great step forward considering he has been out for such a long time. The question is whether I can play him from the start or continue as I did on Saturday as a substitute. It’s a great dilemma, a real selection poser for me, which is good to have.”

Vidic missed training on Monday morning while he underwent treatment on a knock sustained against Arsenal, but the Reds' captain is expected to start alongside Chris Smalling in defence against Marseille.

The wider picture on the injury front looks good for Sir Alex, with Ji-sung Park and Owen Hargreaves (both hamstring injuries) both back in training, if currently away from the main first-team group. Jonny Evans is due back if not against Bolton Wanderers at the weekend, then after the forthcoming international break. There was no mention of Darren Fletcher (who has been suffering with illness), Rio Ferdinand (calf) or Anderson (knee), but all are expected back relatively soon.

“It’s an important time now and we’re in three tournaments,” added the boss. “The key now is to have everyone available. It would be nice to have that.

“Ji-sung Park is making good progress now and hopefully we’ll have him back by Saturday. Owen Hargreaves started training this morning (Monday) and hopefully… you never know, I may have him available towards the end of the season. It doesn’t matter how many players have been injured in the past, it’s important to have as many available for the run-in as possible. If we have that then it definitely increases our chances [of success].”

no dig intended on nani, a great player but at times like the cl game we need some on unselfish for the goals.harap2 nani has his assisting boots on along side his scoring ones.

QUOTE
Nani is considering making a move from England to Italy after four seasons with Manchester United.
According to reports in the Guardian, the Portuguese has spoken with his family and agent, Jorge Mendes, about whether it is the right time to leave Old Trafford for greener pastures in Italy.
Although he is not unhappy at Manchester, the 24-year-old is reportedly bored and seeking a new challenge, if not this summer than almost definitely the next.
Nani believes that he has reached the same level as Cristiano Ronaldo and is looking at another Barclays Premier League or UEFA Champions League winner's medal to end his time at the club.
Sir Alex Ferguson has previously had to talk him out of leaving in 2010, but with Nani's current influence on the side, the damage will be all the greater, given his contribution this season of ten goals and 15 assists.
Nani has won the Champions League, the Club World Cup, two Premier League titles and two Carling Cups in his time at Old Trafford.

Since when nani is not unhappy? hmm.gif

funny.when was the last time rio captained the england team since terry stripped off his captaincy?it's unwise to take it off and give it back to terry just like that.rio should be given some time to lead the national team.

and probability of nani leaving instead of rooney is low for me.i won't believe that news.wth with "not unhappy"?twisting words again? doh.gif

i think he will leave after a couple of season more with us. that is bound to happen. definitely he will want to follow the footsteps of Ronaldo. but i can't see him leaving after this season just yet. he only proven himself starting this season unlike Ronaldo who i think proven himself for like 3 seasons. Nani, 1 season magic, then want to leave? surely a comical action there.

Well, i think Ferdinand wants to taste national glory which made him go on to play for national team. it is better for him to retire since he's getting injury prone. playing too many games certainly won't help. Scholes, Giggs knows this.

currently we're linked with Alexi Sanchez of Udinese and Ashley Young of Aston Villa. there are rumours about signing Jordan Henderson as well. plenty of speculation there. i still haven't watch Sanchez play therefore i'm not sure how good he really is. Both Young and Henderson did exceptionally well at Aston Villa and Sunderland respectively. actually i'm dreaming a move for Roma Daniele De Rossi but since Carrick signed a new contract, that won't happen. laugh.gif

Personally, i think Rooney played well in deeper role although i definitely would like to see him banging in goals as center forward. by the way, i just want ur opinion. do u think our strikers rarely trying to pull out opposition CBs from their initial position in order to create a gap for our CMs to shoot?

it's rare for me to do this but, here goes nothing. i think he is lonely too. his comment often biased towards us. i'm sure most of us disagree with what Rafael did and Nani reaction but he, totally shoot only Man Utd fault, Man Utd to blame etc etc. he wasn't even tried to look at other clubs stats. i can understand with some fans hatred towards us but his post and comments always annoying. he's like, inviting us for a debate.

his obsession is on par with psychiatric problem. For example Toshio asked him how is Kolo, and he replies with whatever news he knows...then he have to go and add "He isnt a serial offender" rolleyes.gif seriously i have no idea what life he is actually living, i can just imagine MU players and SAF pics all over his walls and knives thrown at them.

his obsession is on par with psychiatric problem. For example Toshio asked him how is Kolo, and he replies with whatever news he knows...then he have to go and add "He isnt a serial offender" rolleyes.gif seriously i have no idea what life he is actually living, i can just imagine MU players and SAF pics all over his walls and knives thrown at them.

this is called hardcore ABU + citeh fan.

this kinda ppl is the best to gloat when we win.

this is what its like to be city,
this is what its like to be small,
this is what its like when ur club wins nothing at all,
nothing...at all.

just askin'

Personally, i think Rooney played well in deeper role although i definitely would like to see him banging in goals as center forward.

it's just highlighting roo's versatility as a player

he can score like drogba, pass like scholes, feed crosses like nani and become a cute little tank just like puyol

Dun really believe a word on the news that nani is leaving us and seeking new pastures in italy. Lousy journalist trying to sell newspaper. Italy of all places....., if they say spain maybe i will give it a thought. Can;t understand how top player will chose serie A over EPL.

Agree with this completely.

And in this case, nani obviously does not fall into both category.

ala the armband isnt that important la.if he is selected to rep his country that alone is way bigger then leading.when lead, kalah kena kutuk and take an unbalanced amount of criticism for wut.

besides im with you guys on him retiring.his fitness problem are well documented and if he wishes to prolong his playing days, thats the only route left.

p.s on the rubbish stuff of nani going to serie a, its down right stupid.

serie a is on the down now and next year their slot for europe is getting slashed even more...so unless nani is similarly stupid as the press wch printed the news he wont head there.now as ofr la liga i doubt the only 2 clubs playing in that dull league wants him.

still cannont, new seria A rules stipulates that a player must be above the age of 35 to join any italian sides.

they wanna keep their "retirement home" theme.

would wish for real madrid to play with barcelona. then we can see the galactico team perform.
besides, i think SAF would want to buy some times to pair rooney + valencia for rooney to hit top form by the end of the season. tongue.gif

QUOTE
Lindegaard set for knee op
The club have confirmed that goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard will undergo knee surgery on Thursday.

The operation will keep the United stopper on the sidelines for the next five weeks.

Since signing for the Reds in January, the Dane has made two appearances in goal. His debut came in the 2-1 FA Cup win at Southampton and he kept a clean sheet in the next round victory over Crawley Town at Old Trafford.

Rooney was excellent with his long passes.
Hernandez finding space for the tap ins, very nice.
Valencia did very well for the pass to Giggs for the 2nd goal.

Gutted for Rafael & O'Shea though - hamstring injury sure take them out for a few weeks sad.gif

What nervy moment we had after they scored the goal. Away goal rules... that's what knocked us out by Bayern and now they suffered the KO by away goal rules courtesy of Inter! Wow. laugh.gif

The time wasting period well done by the lads! biggrin.gif Though can see some Mars players not happy with the result and purposely walk into little pea after the whistle. Nevermind there Chicharito, we won. brows.gif

well who knows.its up to the state of our midfield either way.he wont be available so some one else will have to step in.

The problem for us was their height and they caused us problems from their set-pieces. But our experience saw us through in the end, I think and it was a good result, for sure."

OptaJoe : 93% - Michael Carrick misplaced just four of his 58 passes tonight & had the best pass completition rate on the pitch (93%). Control.

more reason to put Rooney in a AM/forward CM kind of position...did well against both Arsenal and Marseille
as much as I like Rooney to score - I do like that Rooney played in mid and gave steel to the mid, which we clearly have been missing in games against Chels and Pool

Have to say, Hernandez has been astounding. 16 goals in 17 matches. Or something like that. Amazing considering this is his first season. He's got that poacher's instinct. The same one Ole and RvN have.

Now we have 3 strikers coming into form. I hope it stays that way. This is a good problem to have.

Sad to see O'Shea and Rafael injured. Just as SAF was talking about how important it was to have players fit for the run in.

With Evans coming back, it looks like Smalling and Evans in the middle and Brown on the right. This is the limit. Pray for no more injuries.

i guess Rooney really prefer the initial position he played at Everton and Man Utd before SAF converted him into a center forward.

Maybe you can go and have a look at the league now and see. Man utd already given the league thanks to sir Alex friends. Wait and see champions league I won't be surprise if marseille knock man utd out, but if they do beat marseille they will get thrash more then 3 goals against any Europe big boys.
Arsenal should go all out for fa cup, carling cup & champions league bcs it's fair ground there.

Haha i think rooney really relishing his position now... playing behind Chicha and spraying ball across the field...

Yesterday his pass to giggs for the 1st goal really make me drooling...

I think we really can consider playing him at scholes position after he retired... he really got the ability to filled scholes boots...

*
For Hernandez, it is not only is poaching instincts, but also how he gets away from his markers and keeps finding space in the six yard box. Plus his blistering speed. Amazing.

yeah just when we are having our midfielders back, now the backline pulak sweat.gif

There are similarities between Roo and Scholes,

1) Both played as a striker
2) Both have similar range of pass
3) Both have the ability to shoot

I think he can make it in the midfield. We've seen SAF switched his player's preferred postion before (Alan Smith, Scholes), so it would be interesting if Rooney plays as a midfielder. I do think SAF have that thought in mind considering Carrick's now switched to a more holding role.

Anders set for knee op

QUOTE
The club have confirmed that goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard will undergo knee surgery on Thursday.

The operation will keep the United stopper on the sidelines for the next five weeks.

Since signing for the Reds in January, the Dane has made two appearances in goal. His debut came in the 2-1 FA Cup win at Southampton and he kept a clean sheet in the next round victory over Crawley Town at Old Trafford.

United have confirmed that young stopper Ben Amos has been recalled from his loan spell at Oldham Athletic as cover.

Busy times for medical team

QUOTE
United's medical team will be kept extremely busy over the next few days with the injuries continuing to mount, particularly in defence.

The Reds lost John O'Shea to what looked like a hamstring strain during the first half against Marseille, while his replacement, Rafael, was stretchered off after half-time with what appeared to be a similar injury.

Sir Alex was already without his first choice centre-back pairing of Nemanja Vidic (calf) and Rio Ferdinand (calf), who has not played since 1 February, while Anderson (knee) and Ji-sung Park (hamstring) are still battling their way back to fitness.

Before kick-off, it was also confirmed that Anders Lindegaard will be out of action for five weeks following knee surgery which take place on Thursday.

The boss will have to "wait and see on Vidic," but he may have Jonny Evans back for Saturday's league clash with Bolton at Old Trafford.

"Jonny started training this week so hopefully we'll have him for Saturday," he told MUTV.

"If we can get through the Bolton game I've then got two weeks [during the international break] to try and get some of them patched up.

"If you look at the games we've had over the last couple of weeks - Chelsea and Liverpool away from home, Arsenal in the FA Cup and then Marseille, it's a big demand on players," he added in reference to the growing injury list.

"The speed of the game today catches you out."

Then u just have to accept that he isn't the creative type, or not anymore. He isn't Paul scholes, don't forget he was bought as a direct replacement for Keane. The only thing I wish he can improve is his comandeering and steel, but that is also a character thingy (like robson and keano) so if he isn't the loud and "dictating the midfield" as the hard man, then that's just his personality. Maybe he isn't great, but that doesnt mean he's bad.

Although im ecstatic we won,i cant help but feel sorry for Berba. He has been very good this season, top scorer in the league,he loves the club and yet lately he just cant seem to get into the first 11.
Obviously I/we trust SAF but i hope Berba starts the next match. He's one of my favourite players in the world and sitting on the bench for a consecutive run of matches can't be good for his confidence.
The only issue is Hernandez and Rooney are clicking at the moment, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it. rclxub.gif

scholes never quite played as striker. more like forward centre but always playing role of an attacking midfielder.

passing range might be the same but scholes more likely to hold the ball style while rooney more likely to go forward after passing the ball
type of striker who get deep and supporting role. even when playing AML he more likely to get deep than wide unlike valencia, nani (sometime also go deep to get goals)

Scholes did play as striker during his early years with United, in fact, when Cantona was suspended for the famous/infamous kungfu kick incident he was then again needed in the striker's dept as Andy Cole's strike partner due to Mark Hughes departure.

SAF never really tried Rooney at middle of the park as a play-maker, but we can see glimpse of his awareness of spotting a teammate out wide and spraying accurate cross field passes. He has all the qualities of a good midfielder. As for him playing out wide, he is not a natural winger a-la Nani or Tony, that's why he find it difficult playing on the flanks. When Keano was around, Scholes also acts as a supporting role to the strikers or striker depending on the formation played. We can see evidence in the 02-03 season where he scored a lot of goals either from forward position or midfield. i think Rooney can do the same with Carrick being the holding midfielder and I would love to see that.

but he still start as a midfielder not striker turn to midfielder. only choose to play more upfront role due to absent of cantona. thats why we got sheringham after cantona left
always seen playing more of a AM/FC role on his early days. nowdays more like CM but still more to attacking role compare to fletcher and carrick

also think rooney can be a good midfielder coz for me rooney have all qualities to be true footballer.. type of player who can play anywhere. highly adaptable. even when playing AML dont think he play bad at all. rooney also been seen helping to defence for many occasions. still prefer him stay as FC partners etiher berba/chica

whats this about feeling sorry for berba etc etc...kamon la league stats isnt the only thing the gaffer looks at when fielding players.again look back at our treble season we had far more strikers fit and scoring at all front and some have been left out so why the sorry now??so when chicha gets on the bench after helping us qualify do we feel sorry for him then??its all in the name of rotation.

doesnt make sense.were not doing bad, players are stepping up and giving competition to others wch is what we want instead of being a 1 man team.

anyway injury news still vague, still no clear pt as who will be where but 2 weeks break couldn't have come at a better time i guess.

Nani admits confidence knock

QUOTE
Manchester United ace Nani admits the leg injury he suffered against Liverpool struck a blow to his confidence.

The Portuguese winger returned to action against Marseille on Tuesday night after suffering a gashed leg at Anfield earlier this month following a Jamie Carragher challenge.

United were 2-1 victors over their French opponents to progress to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

But Nani feels his own display at Old Trafford was below-par, and blames the lingering effects of his injury.

Careful

"My leg is okay. It's not 100 per cent but it's okay to play," he told Sky Sports News.

"Of course, my confidence is not the same. The players always like to tackle me. I have to be careful and that's why maybe my football was not the best.

"But it's great to be back. Now I'm just thinking about the next games. I will be much better."

Nani's return provided a welcome lift to United on Tuesday, with several key players on the sidelines.

Defenders John O'Shea and Rafael both picked up knocks against Marseille to add to manager Sir Alex Ferguson's injury woes, but youngster Chris Smalling believes the return of players such as Nani, Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia boosted the squad.

Smalling said: "Obviously we lost a couple more players tonight but it's good to see Michael Carrick and Antonio coming back.

"All the bodies are starting to feed back at a crucial stage in the season."

Carrick, who made his comeback against Marseille after struggling with calf and groin complaints, admits it was unfortunate to lose two right-backs in O'Shea and Rafael at such a decisive stage in the campaign.

"It was a strange one tonight with two injuries in the same position," he said.

"It's never easy to deal with but luckily we've got such a good squad and strength in depth that people can step in.

"It's not ideal but whatever's thrown at us we have to deal with. Hopefully we'll get the bodies back, if not for Saturday, then for after the international break."

Opportunity

With key players such as Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Ji-sung Park also ruled out with various knocks, veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs agrees the impending international break will provide the perfect opportunity for the United squad to regroup before the season run-in.

"We hope the international break has come at a good time for us," said Giggs.

"We've got a tough game against Bolton on Saturday. Hopefully we'll get through that and then we've got two weeks to get bodies back and hopefully that will be the case."

Carrick's defensive concern

QUOTE
Michael Carrick is hoping he will not be pressed into emergency service in defence for Manchester United's game against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday.

United's defensive injury problems worsened on Tuesday night after John O'Shea and Rafael were both forced off in the UEFA Champions League win over Marseille.

Nemanja Vidic missed that game due to a calf injury, while his fellow centre-half Rio Ferdinand has been sidelined since the start of February.

The latest injuries have left United with only four fit defenders to choose from, although Northern Ireland international Jonny Evans has a chance of being available to face Bolton.

Carrick was forced to play at centre-half in a 3-0 defeat against Fulham in the Premier League last season and is keen to avoid a repeat scenario.

"It did get a mention in the changing room," the England midfielder told MUTV.

"I said to Mike Phelan 'I don't fancy that again'.

"It is never nice to get the injuries of course. It is disappointing when you pick up a number in a similar position.

"But I don't think we are that desperate yet and hopefully I won't be called upon."

Nani rejects exit rumours

QUOTE
Manchester United winger Nani has rubbished rumours suggesting he could leave the club in the summer.

Reports have implied that the Portugal international could be on his way at the end of the season, having enhanced his reputation over recent years.

Following the Old Trafford exit of countryman Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009, Nani has matured into United's most creative midfielder.

His rise to prominence has led some to suggest that he is now willing to take on a fresh challenge, with there likely to be no shortage of takers were he to become available.

Nani, though, has been quick to play down the reports, insisting he remains fully committed to the Red Devils cause.

He posted on his Twitter account: "I've seen some false reports on the press. I want you to know that you will hear the truth from me. Love MU."

The 24-year-old returned to action with United on Tuesday as he helped Sir Alex Ferguson's men book their place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

He has been with the club since 2007, progressing out of the Academy ranks at Sporting Lisbon to become a global star - in the much the same way as Ronaldo did after he made a move to England.

Lol you just insist on being the contrarian, dont you? tongue.gif
Its was a huge game, and Berba was benched. He was benched against Chelsea,he didnt even play against Arsenal, and didnt get a chance to play yesterday too. These are all big games and im sure he would want to play but he didnt get the chance. Thats why we feel sorry for him considering he's been very good this season.
Ish,you ar tongue.gif
*
well contrarian it may be, the sorry seems a bit off la mang.i mean yeah he didnt play but think of the ones who played.gave them more credibility for getting the job done, and as for berba its always good to have him in the squad, whether he plays or not, and even if he didnt play the past few games, he can always take it as a rest and gun for the next one, not a single player in our camp is going to play all the matches.

if he didnt play bcoz of a fallout or etc its a diff story labut currently others are challenging his place and they are in front, its up to him to battle it back.

and as for the question of whos been good or not...thats another highly over rated stuff we seclude our selves from.we win trophies each and every member of the squad IS the BEST, not any single player.its a team game mind you.

but he still start as a midfielder not striker turn to midfielder. only choose to play more upfront role due to absent of cantona. thats why we got sheringham after cantona left
always seen playing more of a AM/FC role on his early days. nowdays more like CM but still more to attacking role compare to fletcher and carrick

also think rooney can be a good midfielder coz for me rooney have all qualities to be true footballer.. type of player who can play anywhere. highly adaptable. even when playing AML dont think he play bad at all. rooney also been seen helping to defence for many occasions. still prefer him stay as FC partners etiher berba/chica

All this hype about Rooney replacing Scholes.. I don't think is the right choice to put him there..

He simply lacks ball control, he can pass, but when closed down, he tends to lose the ball. Given space, he can dictate the game, spray pass, shoot, pass, whatever. That's why he's good when playing in a hole role. He need other striker to make space for him. When defenders are marking Berba or Chic, he can make good pass, or maybe he can go for himself.

He plays better when he has strike partner. This statement is greatly underrated, as Rooney scores more goal last season, but remember, most of the goals are header. When he can't head the ball, he hardly has the confident to strike the ball; too little space, so much defender marking him.

Now, he's playing a more free role, he can provide more style, more creativity to the side.

Just my 10 cent. biggrin.gif

I'm in the best place

QUOTE
Young defender Chris Smalling has featured in all but one of the Reds’ Champions League games this season. In this interview he talks about his adventures in Europe and the progress he's making in a busy first campaign at United...

This is your first season playing Champions League football. Is the challenge what you expected and how does it differ to the Premier League?
The biggest difference is in the tempo of games. In the Premier League it’s all about attacking football, but in Europe you sometimes have to be a bit more patient. Even teams like Barcelona bide their time. You see the way they just keep the ball even it means going back to the keeper. They pick their moment. I think the way play in the Premier League can give English sides an advantage though, because we have the ability to lift the tempo in games and not all foreign sides are used to that.

French sports newspaper L’Equipe described your performance in the first leg against Marseille as ‘a revelation’ – were you happy with your display?
Keeping the clean sheet was a big thing for us especially in what was quite a hostile atmosphere. It’s nice to hear those comments and I think the experience I got from playing for Fulham in the Europa League last season has certainly helped me settle in the Champions League.

Looking back on your first season so far, you must be really pleased with how things have gone for you personally…
It’s been great. I’m not surprised by the amount of games I’ve played – I always hoped I’d get my chance – it’s been more the calibre of games I’ve been involved in which has surprised me. I really feel like I’ve progressed and it’s been great that the manager has faith in me to go out and do a job for the team.

What has surprised you most about life as a United player?
I think the size of the whole place and the spotlight that’s on you, but also the fact that it’s a real family club. There’s a great togetherness in the dressing room despite the fact there are so many different cultures. The spirit between everyone is fantastic and it makes it a lot easier for any new player to settle in.

You’ve been touted as Rio Ferdinand’s long-term successor – how has he helped you on and off the pitch?
He’s been brilliant, even if it’s just little chats here and there about my form, the experience he has of playing against certain players or his views on how other teams might approach games. He’s always there to talk, whether it be in training or during games or at half-time during a match he might not even be playing in. He’s a massive voice in the dressing room and I’m very grateful for his support.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given so far?
There are probably two things. The first is about communication on the pitch. I’ve always been quite quiet, but the likes of Rio and Vida have spoken to me about the importance of shouting up more. The other is about having the confidence to express yourself when you have the ball and to always look for that forward pass. Mick and Rene really emphasise that to us in training and it’s something I’m getting better at. I want to improve every aspect of my game and there’s no question I’m at the best place to do that.

Hernandez hungry for more

QUOTE
Chicharito is hoping for a trophy-winning debut season at United, and looking forward to getting back to winning ways in the league…

How do you assess your season so far? Has it gone better than you expected?
I’m very lucky to be here, and happy to have played so much for the biggest team in the world. I’m really enjoying myself and hope to play a part in the team winning trophies this year. My first season has gone better than I could have hoped for. I was expecting to be on the bench and playing for the Reserves more, to introduce me to football in this country, so I’m delighted to have played so many games. Now I want more.

Do you seek advice from your team-mates and the manager?
All the players talk to me about things I can work on and improve in my game. That’s a great thing about this club. I get advice from Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov on different areas of my game, but that’s not just because they are different types of strikers, it’s because they are different people. When the boss speaks to me, he always tells me to keep working and to keep the same mentality. He’s happy because I am improving a lot.

You’ve scored [16] goals so far this season: have you set yourself a target?
I’ve never set myself a goals target; I don’t like to put a number on it. All I want to do is win trophies with United, because this is a team game. Of course, I enjoying scoring goals and that’s my role as a striker, but I always say that goals are a consequence of teamwork.

Last time out in the league we lost to Liverpool. What do you think went wrong?
The game came at the end of two difficult weeks in which we played three other away games. We got the draw in Marseille and the win at Wigan, but lost at Chelsea and that may have affected our confidence a little. And at Liverpool, two mistakes cost us the game. But we are still in three competitions and we want to win them all, so we have the opportunity to get back to winning ways.

Scoring against them is normally a highlight of a United player’s career, but presumably you couldn’t take much pleasure because of the game’s result?
That’s true. Goals always give you confidence, but if I had the choice I would swap this one for the three points, as I’ve said about several other goals in my career. It was nice to get a goal at Anfield, but I would have preferred not to score and win. We can’t change the past, but we can focus on the present and the future. The mood is good. We’ve discussed what went wrong and what we can improve upon, and now we’re looking ahead. Everyone here – the manager, players and all the staff – is determined to respond. This is the crucial part of the season and we’re all looking forward to it.

After four away games in a row, has it been good to have a run of games at Old Trafford?
Yes, definitely. It’s great to play in front of all our fans, who give us an advantage. We generally haven’t played as well away from home as we have at Old Trafford. I can’t think of a reason why that would be the case, because we go out with the same mindset whether we’re playing at home or away – to win the game.

Chicharito was speaking to United Review ahead of the Arsenal FA Cup game.

Sir Alex handed five-game ban

QUOTE
The Football Association today announced that Sir Alex Ferguson has been handed a five-match touchline ban and £30,000 fine after being found guilty of an improper conduct charge.

A statement on the FA’s website this afternoon reads: “At an Independent Regulatory Commission today (Wednesday), Sir Alex Ferguson was handed a touchline suspension for three matches and fined a total of £30,000.

The Commission found the charge of Improper Conduct relating to media comments proven, following remarks made in relation to match official Martin Atkinson in post-match interviews following Manchester United’s fixture with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday 1 March 2011.

Furthermore the Commission invoked a two match suspended touchline ban, relating to a previous charge of Improper Conduct in relation to media comments made in October 2009.

Therefore Sir Alex Ferguson was ordered to a serve a five match touchline ban commencing on Tuesday 22 March 2011.”

Ferguson banned for five matches

QUOTE
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been suspended for five matches and handed a £30,000 fine following comments he made about referee Martin Atkinson earlier this month.

Following a controversial 2-1 defeat at Chelsea Ferguson said he had "feared the worst" when Atkinson was appointed match official for the Premier League clash on March 1, adding: "You want a fair referee, or a strong referee anyway - and we didn't get that."

The FA's disciplinary board have imposed a three match touchline ban and activated a suspended two-match ban that hung over the United manager after accusing referee Alan Wiley of being "not fit" after a 2-2 draw with Sunderland at Old Trafford last season.

Ferguson will be confined to the stands for the FA Cup semi-final with Manchester City at Wembley as well as Premier League clashes with Bolton, West Ham, Fulham and Everton.

The United boss was angry over Atkinson's failure to dismiss Chelsea defender David Luiz for fouls on Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney after he had already been booked.

He was further upset when Chelsea were awarded what he considered a "soft" winning penalty when Yuri Zhirkov took a tumble under a challenge from United centre-back Chris Smalling.

With Premier League leaders United just three points ahead of Arsenal

Any team in last 8 is not fluke be it shaktar or Chelsea or whichever. I don't mind meeting with Special One again and of cos the return of C.Ron...

Barca on other hand strong too but they too have injuries

problem is which other team?

prefer united be the one to beat them. QF would be too early so hope for semis.
if theres any team i rather lose its barca. think we got better chance on 2 leg game against them.
they may hv stronger side but SAF is more experience and better tactician. BELIEVE flex.gif

for QF anyteam will do

well no gaffer for 5 games...albeit only from the dug out.lets see what the abu's will come next when they always say the refs are afraid of him.

anyway, this could be a positive thing yet.gaffer can have clearer picture on whats happening on the pitch from the stands just as he used to do in the past.

anyway we cont on with our program at all 3 fronts.

i'd rather spurs rape barca and put the shame in the faces of every catalan in nou camp.then they got the bragging rights as the first newcomer that beat 3 UCL champ in their first season

we have our own unfinished business with Real Madrid, especially with Jose Mourinho at the helm...

Rio out for the rest of the season?

QUOTE
Thursday 17 March

10:00 Sir Alex says Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are both unavailable for the weekend clash with Bolton. Vidic should be back after the international break. Jonny Evans could come back in "but it's a risk as he's been out so long". John O'Shea is out for five weeks, while Rafael will be missing for two or three weeks, both with hamstring injuries. On Rio, Sir Alex adds worryingly: "We may be lucky to get him back for part of this season." More updates from the presser... (GT)

- Injuries to defenders: "We're having a bad spell. Only a few weeks ago we had every defender fit. We've got the bonus of Wes Brown being able to play centre-back and right-back, and Chris Smalling has been brilliant.

- On midfielders and other team news: Fletcher is still suffering from a virus. Anderson is doing well running wise and getting close to a return. Owen Hargreaves trained all week which is good news. Park has been training and may be on the bench on Saturday. Michael Owen is available.

- On FA charge: "It's disappointing. This is the only industry where you can't tell the truth. But it's in the past. I've not decided about appealing."

Davies-Elmander-Sturridge. Damn. Evans-Smalling partnership didn't look very convincing at the moment. Last game they partnered together is the Carling Cup drubbing, rite?

Is Petrov available? Last game in Reebok he was impressive against us.

Right now I think the attacking position needs to be step up. Score a lot of goals and we'll be safe.

it may be a long shot and written of by 99% of ppl but im still have that feeling he might just make this time around.

Looks like we only have Brown, Smalling, Fabio, and Evra as our fit defenders. Evans still in doubt with SAF said it will be a risk putting him on considering he's been out for a long time. News on Ferdinand might miss the rest of the season is a blow for us. We really need him especially towards few final games at the end of the season. but we just have to strive without him. No Fletcher therefore right back position will definitely occupied by either Fabio or Brown. i hope Carrick won't play as a CB.

Mr. Reliable like Irwin eh? although he's not as good as Rafael and Brown when comes to overlapping but his presence is felt during set piece defending. against Bolton, a purely physical team, O' Shea will be important. too bad we lost him to injury.

reliable, yeah...but irwin was a much better player than he is.
we miss him because he can play everywhere, left right centerback...midfield...
he's nowhere near a world class midfielder, centreback nor fullback..but he gets the job done..
we nid a player like him the most at this crucial times when games are piling up and injuries are aplenty...

They are now lying at 6th position, 6 points behind Spurs and have played 1 more game. So the chances for them to get the last Europa League ticket is quite slims... whistling.gif

according to UEFA site, it should be 1200CET at Nyon, Swiss.

So I try to use this converter below:

Nyon, Switz - Kuala Lumpur

it should be 1900 / 7.00PM our local time. The draw held at Nyon, Switzerland.

UEFA Site

nice...SAF not appealing n wanna start ban immediately so he'll be available for Arsenal match it seems...

QUOTE
Sir Alex Ferguson will be on the touchline for Manchester United's crucial game against Arsenal after he opted not to appeal against his five-game suspension and requested that it start immediately.

Ferguson was handed the suspension on Wednesday, and fined £30,000, as a result of his criticism of referee Martin Atkinson following United's Premier League defeat at Chelsea.

Having requested a personal hearing in an attempt to clear his name, Ferguson was critical of the FA's subsequent punishment, telling a press conference on Thursday: "It is disappointing. It is the only industry where you can't tell the truth."

However, Ferguson has decided not to appeal the ban and has been granted permission to start the suspension immediately, meaning he will not be on the touchline for Saturday's game against Bolton, or the following games against West Ham and Fulham in the league, as well as the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City.

Thursday's news does mean that his suspension will have finished in time for United's trip to title rivals Arsenal on May 1, despite expectations to the contrary.

An FA statement read: "The FA can confirm that Manchester United will not be appealing Sir Alex Ferguson's five-game touchline ban. Manchester United have also requested that the ban starts with immediate effect. This has been accepted by the FA."

Don't start on Liverpool's situation.. I pity them really. Their TS only come when they win. When we no update on our thread because our TS only bz for a while, they come troll also no worry. Here lack of pulis, pulling trigger whenever outsiders post.

And tbh, that TS fella of the CL winner, he manage to troll Arsenal fan, really bad.

On our current situation, based on this season performance and last season's, it'll be amazing if we can still be on top of the table in another 6 weeks, not that I don't believe in our team, but I do hope we won all our remaining games, but with this kind of crisis, we better prepare for the worst.

watched Man Utd season review 06/07 before Marseille match.. a season where we lost almost entire 1st choice defender towards the end of the season. hopefully this story will not repeat this season.. (though december last season are much worse)

positive things are Arsenal had also bad injury situation. plus point, our attacking dept looking very healthy right now. international break are timing perfectly.

hopefully we'll get a good draw, i want Schalke or Shaktar (though a long trip are exhausting). QF CL games are around game vs Arsenal@Emirates, which potentially be our pitfall..

vs Spurs will be great draw too.. they're not easy. but at least SAF know their team really well and travel distance arent annoying.. we had a very good record against them will be a little advantage.. their mind also occupied with uncertainty in top 4 position.
