Hello mr azari.

Ive been a fan of your thread since my spm days. Now this coming september 2016 i'll be in my final year for BSc architecture (part I) UiTM Seri Iskandar. Firstly, i wanna thank u so much for dedicating this thread for those who want to dedicate their life to a life of torture.

As u mentioned, Part 1 graduates must go through a compulsory 6 months period of working experience in an architectural firm to further pursue Part 2. Say i end my final year in July 2017, then i start working in the industry in August 2017,  so 6 months including August 2017 till end of January 2018;

is it possible for me to enrol for Master course (Part II) in any public uni for the March 2018 intake ?

Also, what if i start working in September 2017 and 6 months after that would be February 2018, would it still be possible?

Ive heard that like it or not Part 1 graduates have to wait atleast 1 year because they wouldnt make it in time to enrol for a March intake. This is due to graduates having to wait for their universities to issue out their transcripts(?) or something like that which would require alot of waiting. Or was it because the application for the March intake would be closed before theyve finish their 6 months working in the industry? Im not sure but i know its something technical.

As u can see, i dont feel like i wanna wait for 1 year to pursue my Part II unless there isnt any other choice. Can u confirm this?

Also, i heard from a friend of mine which he said one of the staff in the firm hes working for only worked for 6 months then immediately enrolled for Part II course in UiTM Shah Alam. This enhances the confusion in my head
*
hello there. these are very technical questions, where it could vary between the schools. but i'll try my best to explain.

1. yes, it is possible to join M.Arch by feb 2018 if u finish everything by july 2017. however, u need to time everything perfectly.

2. the working requirement can be fulfilled at the point of registration, not application. meaning, if u wanna apply for feb 2018, u can start applying right after u finished in july 2017. then u can go and work for 6 months. by the time u are ready for registration, u've completed the 6 months requirement. so far, i havent seen any school pun the 6 months working requirement as a pre-requisite for application.

3. the issue about transcripts is a tricky one. all universities require those if u wanna apply to their M.Arch. so this is one requirement that has to be fulfilled during application. if u're applying to the same university (say, UiTM sri iskandar to UiTM puncak alam for example), u can negotiate with the school as both will have a record of u and ur studies. u might be able to delay or even skip the transcript requirement.

but for other schools, i'm afraid u'd have to wait for the transcript to be released before u can apply.

* * *

bottom line is: start working right after u finish, and immediately apply when u get ur transcript.

Greetings everyone!

I finished my Pre-U this year, (took A-Levels) and decided to pursue a degree in architecture next year. This is due to the intake being full (for Taylor's anyways) Currently, I'm looking up at universities that are offering a bachelor degree in architecture here in Malaysia. Here are my choices: Taylor's University, UCSI University and UTAR.

My question is, can I still get my Master's overseas with a degree from UTAR? Generally thinking of going into UTAR because I heard it is quite well known for their architecture.

Thank you.

With regards to international m.arch, u should check if they are compatible with us. Normally, UK, AU, NZ etc are compatible with ours. Hence when a local school is accredited by LAM, u should have no problem going overseas.

But bear in mind that u might be required to take their part 1 exam.

no. it probably just takes longer. architects need to be able to communicate well. this could happen using visual, verbal or written communications.

drawing is just ONE of the ways to visually communicate. you can explore the others.

Hi all,

I have just completed part 1 in malaysia and is currently working in a singapore firm.

Planning to continue for master next year, however still very confusing on choosing the university on whether local or overseas..

Most probably I will prefer to keep working in SG/overseas after completion of part 2, so I have check through the admission to NUS part 2, however, I have find out that I might end up gettin a March from NUS without RIBA recognition as my part 1 in malaysia isnt from UM or UITM, meaning it would kill my opportunities to work in UK for the future? So does it mean if i have the will to work in UK/SG for future, UM with RIBA might be a better choice than NUS?

Another option might be straight away continue master in UK. Though the fees is really something... Is it hard for malaysian to work in UK after completion at part 2 with ARB & RIBA recognition over there? Soft of like registering those visa (tier 2)?
And what about a local grad from UM/UITM to work in UK? is there any possibilities for them to do so?

Is the culture difference/exposure worth spending a huge loan (200k/300k) to study and work in UK? just wondering... and need some advise..

Thanks and appreciated any reply on my questions..

many people confuse what RIBA accreditation really means. RIBA is just a club that goes around the world certifying that school XYZ is equivalent or better than the standard they've seen in the UK. but this is not binding in any way, nor does it carry any professional or academic recognition with it.

imagine manchester united comes here, and tells us that our football players are equivalent to the UK players. does it mean we could go there and play for them? does it mean we can get easier visas? NO. individual schools in malaysia go for RIBA mainly to get a 3rd party opinion that they are THAT GOOD. u know how people tend to say UiTM is a bottom tier university, but wait a minute, their archi school have RIBA!

singapore do not have any governing body that certifies education, because they literally have two schools of architecture. so instead, they use RIBA to give them some basic idea of the quality to expect. again, this is not binding in any ways whatsoever.

UTM students (without RIBA) have been working in singapore both after part 1 or part 2 with no restrictions. as far as SG practice is concerned, if u hold a cert that is accredited by the originating country to practice as an architect, they're happy with it. and the same can be said about entry level to NUS or NYP.

and about the UK option, i would say do it if u have the money to spend. with the current economic state, u either will put a massive debt on ur shoulder, or burden that load on ur sponsors (or parents!). but honestly, do not put any hope on being able to work there as an architect after finishing ur studies there. they say BREXIT will cause the UK to look for non-EU workers, but still we have not seen that happening yet. and there would be even less hope for local grads to land a place there immediately after graduation. they will seek at least 5-10 years experience because they have a large number of UK graduates to fill up the industry.

if u do decide to go there, then it would be advisable to look for schools that are validated by LAM. at least u can come back here and work if u cant find a place there.

I knew UTM in Johor has provide this kind study, but it is a best if UTM KL also have this classes

Free very appreciate if you able to share me all this information even this topic is not under architecture. I really need to know it and plan for my future.

I see. If the massive debt is an issue, then probably I will left only considering studying in SG/Msia... Do you have any advise on these schools for the possibilities of working overseas such as at Australia? Is getting an architect (senior/junior) job at Australia favourable for NUS/ Malaysia Local Uni graduates? Or is it significantly more favourable towards NUS graduates as NUS is accredited by Australian Institute of Architects?

Like i said earlier, due to the current policies, if you're interested to migrate and work abroad, the best option is to study and graduate there. Else, you should think about working and get a few year's experience before going abroad. At the moment, the best and easiest option is to study locally, and find a job in Singapore. Then use your experience in Singapore to apply abroad like Australia. Be aware that some people get it easy. Most have tried for many years to no avail.

Regarding NUS and Malaysian, well this is quite vague at the moment. I believe LAM is quite aggressive when they changed the policy to no longer accredit australian architectural degrees automatically. But now it looks like they are working on somekind of mutual agreement between the msia-australia. Hopefully, we will mutually recognize each other so that we can study there and come back to practice with no problem, and they too can study in malaysia and practice in australia with no issues.

Wait, why would australians study in Malaysia?

Because our fees are bloody cheap! HAHAHA

that typically is a general statement by the university for all courses. relevant here refers to anything specific required by the course. for a B.Sc, normally it refers to any combination of science subjects.

with that said, this is a question that is best answered by taylor's themselves. no point of beating around the bush. either look up the architecture programme's own website, or give them a call.

Hi Azarimy,

Just for consideration, If i'm planning to practice my architecture in Malaysia does it matter whether I take my part 2 in UTAR vs Taylors? When finding work will firm consider between these two certs for part 2 or do just consider whether I'm registered as a graduate architect? Looking forward to your input on this matter as I plan to further my studies for part 2.

Thank You in advance smile.gif

as far as licenses go, any schools accredited with LAM part 2 are equal to each other at the minimum achievements. but beyond that is a different matter, where each school is allowed to excel in areas they are strong in. for example, some school might focus on urban design, others in technical expertise, a few on management and so on.

at the moment, schools like taylor's and UTAR have yet to settle on an area of strength (not that they need to), as these are normally the things firms look for. so it's not about which school is better than the other or more preferred. it's basically about the kind of graduate they need at that particular time.

even graduates from the same university wouldnt necessarily perform equally to each other. hence, it boils down to your portfolio. most of my practicing friends have given up looking at school backgrounds, but rather focus on the graduates themselves.
