just bought a 50u20 from iamsobloodysick. been playing it with my hdplayer on some 1080p movies but found it there's noises / snow when i went close to the scrren to check the PQ. is it normal or during breaking in time only?
by the way how to check the running hour? i've try the method from v1 but stuck at the last part where i've to hold 'mute' button for 3 sec and i can't turn it off by pressing the power button on the tv, i actually have to turn it OFF.

thanks

the snow or noise is normal for plasmas. normally for a 50" tv, it's recommended to at least 2m away from the screen.

u probably won't see the snow when u're seated at this minimum viewing distance.

really? I'm googling now for this information. I plan to watch 50" plasma in 6~7 feet range.

I thought the plasma disadvantage is just burn-in IR and high power consumption only.

Added on March 24, 2011, 9:26 amI google and found noise and snow only happened after 1 year:

U series maybe got snow/noise if you sit too close but V series probably not noticeable. Anyway look at the picture, not the snow.... tongue.gif

Im still in a dilemma whether to get the V50 or not. Somehow I got a gut feeling, 2011 model will be better and cheaper. With stiff competition from the Korean brands, this has got to be the case. The only thing that put me off is the 2011 high end models lineup seems to be all 3D which Im not too interested in

What do u mean by snow/noise? Is it in bright areas or dark areas? One thing to note is that when a panel is new, the phosphors are unstable due to higher drive voltages for different r,g,b sub pixels due to different half life of each colour. It typically goes away and becomes better after about 50 hrs. Pannys are known to have noisier blacks but that can be minimized with the correct brightness setting. Pannys do not have 'noise' in colours which is also why there is more banding in pannys. I don't want to go too technical on why but will add to this post later.
Pls explain ur problem and let me know ur plasma life an settings that u saw this. Something is not right. If the set is new, pls do not use vivid as it can cause what u r seeing as well.

Accessing the service menu voids the manufacturers warranty? Is it stated anywhere in the manual starship1?

perhaps, the word 'grainy' should be used to describe quintesson's problem instead of 'noise'.

maybe some people would picture 'noise' as in static on blank Tv stations.

i'm pretty sure i have seen this 'grain' from all plasmas if i stand a few centimetres away from it.

tim,

If u r noticing it from a few inches, then its dithering. Plasma dither. However, pannys shd dither very little in colours and more in dark areas.

If u move back about 2-3ft, it shd be difficult to see. If u still see it, u r probably overdriving the panel, most likely in vivid mode or very high contrast.

Pioneers dither more in colours but are stable in blacks.

Sammys dither but have some kind of temporal filtering that renders less on the eyes, but the filtering causes undefeatable sharpening thus the images don't look as realistic as the others.

All the companies have different methods.

When the company chooses to use less aggressive dithering or different algortihms, something gives. In Pannys sense, banding is the effect.

I think this is going to be a long wait, recent tsunami in japan has caused lots of japan factories to reduce parts production

Oh i see...so that's the reason banding is so prevalent in my U20. I even thought the mighty VT25 and V20 don't have this

all this while, i thought those bluray rips that i downloaded were too compressed or someone messed with the colours.

The V and the VTs have but its made worse when the image bit rate is low. There is not enuf info to reduce the banding.

Its possible that u will see it on compressed rips as it will make it worse. Also in Astro HD/SD feeds as well, especially in faces.

I believe US and EU has started to receive their initial batches. From what I've read, Panny plasmas shd not be too hard hit at least in the 1st half. The LCDs and other lines will see some issues.

thanks for the feedback guys.
at the moment my setting are at 'zero' or minimal level cause still in breaking-in stage. will see how it progress later. theoretically plasma PQ is the best but i found that the LCD looks much sharper, it has the feeling that the character & the background is separated, if you know what i mean.

btw can anyone tell me how / steps to check the duration usage on U series, i've tried the V series method stated on V1 but got stuck at the last level no timer shows?
