QUOTE(quintesson @ Mar 24 2011, 12:45 AM)
just bought a 50u20 from iamsobloodysick. been playing it with my hdplayer on some 1080p movies but found it there's noises / snow when i went close to the scrren to check the PQ. is it normal or during breaking in time only?
by the way how to check the running hour? i've try the method from v1 but stuck at the last part where i've to hold 'mute' button for 3 sec and i can't turn it off by pressing the power button on the tv, i actually have to turn it OFF.

thanks

the snow or noise is normal for plasmas. normally for a 50" tv, it's recommended to at least 2m away from the screen.

u probably won't see the snow when u're seated at this minimum viewing distance.

perhaps, the word 'grainy' should be used to describe quintesson's problem instead of 'noise'.

maybe some people would picture 'noise' as in static on blank Tv stations.

i'm pretty sure i have seen this 'grain' from all plasmas if i stand a few centimetres away from it.

tim,

If u r noticing it from a few inches, then its dithering. Plasma dither. However, pannys shd dither very little in colours and more in dark areas.

If u move back about 2-3ft, it shd be difficult to see. If u still see it, u r probably overdriving the panel, most likely in vivid mode or very high contrast.

Pioneers dither more in colours but are stable in blacks.

Sammys dither but have some kind of temporal filtering that renders less on the eyes, but the filtering causes undefeatable sharpening thus the images don't look as realistic as the others.

All the companies have different methods.

When the company chooses to use less aggressive dithering or different algortihms, something gives. In Pannys sense, banding is the effect.

Oh i see...so that's the reason banding is so prevalent in my U20. I even thought the mighty VT25 and V20 don't have this

all this while, i thought those bluray rips that i downloaded were too compressed or someone messed with the colours.

bro anfield posted some settings awhile ago for U20K.

if i still remember, his recommended setting is True cinema, contrast 70, colour 50-51, brightness 0, CATS off, sharpness all the way down to 0.

of course if u can ask him to do proper calibration, that would be better than these settings.

Aside from the :
- price difference
- HD (X) vs FullHD (U)
- reflectiveness you mentioned (confirmed?)

is there anything else different between the Pana 2011 X and U series?
*
U can see the 'screen grid effect' on the X series.

Panny is notorious for using poor quality panels for the X series. It's not even 720p, don't let the marketing fool u.

I think Sammy and Lg's HD ready panels are better than panny's.

ST30 does not have the proper 24p 96hz playback. VT20 has it.
