to install tiles over painted wall, how do we treat the wall to ensure the tiles stick?

do we scrap off the paint, or do we use a hammer on it?

My bathroom was also 5' high. I added 2 more rows to make it about 7'+

The contractor just chipped the wall with chisel randomly on the painted wall. The chipped hole was < 1" deep. Distance between each were around 10" perhaps. Nothing was done on painted wall except for chipped wall that removed the pint. Then they just put tile cement and laid the tile on it. Work done on 3 bathrooms and took around 6 hours I think including lunch break

The white color cement between tile is called grout. It is mixture of cement, water and fine sand. It can be any color. Normally white is used. For tiling cement is used normally in olden days, but now special mixture of cement is used which include adhesive material. This can ease the tiling work and reduce time.

After tiles are fixed to the wall, the gap between tiles are filled with grout which normally white in color. If old grout yellowish and dirty, you can get contractor to re-grout it to look new. I don't know how much though

Still got. The problem is the pattern may be discontinued and most likely even if you get the same series, the color does not match. Color change over time and color also slightly different among different tiles batches

how old is your house? if within 1-2 years, some place somewhere may still have stock. you should ask management for the exact tile brand & code number so you can ask around. Jalan Ipoh whole road selling tiles. go ask all the shops.

Maybe you want to use different pattern on additional 2 rows. It can be nice. Otherwise, replace the whole tiles.

Just Google "construction material subang jaya". Many to choose from. Most likely you can ask them for contractors contact. Usually contractors leave their contact numbers to shops just in case costumers looking for services.

anyone here use Epoxy for grouting? White Cement seems to be prone to cracks but Epoxy are very expensive. can't imagine how much it cost for 10kg epoxy.

don't bother with white cement. it is weak and will change color with time.

just use normal cement and add on waterproof additive to it

end result with be a very dark color cement that is very hard and strong. likely to be fungus resistant too due to the hardness and very low water penetration/absorption.

Instead of powder cement-like grouting, use the silicone type. They are meant for grouting. Sold in tube and can be applied straight to the tile. Squeeze along the line between tiles. It will not grow mold and waterproof. Common nowadays in hardware store I believe.

but silicone type are flexible and looks shiny/rubbery like those used in kitchen cabinets right?

the normal cement don't look well on light colored tiles, especially some existing using white grout.

My bad. I was imaging wall tiles in bathroom. I hate those mold that need to be scrub from time to time

Epoxy grout material more expensive because it is meant for stronger grout as you said.

i notice Sika cement that has waterproof is super expensive. their tile cement that is Part A & B waterproof cost rm80 per bag. yes i ask shop keeper rm18? 80.

but epoxy is expensive lo. and not many shop sell.

for waterproof i just use the Davidco Part A + B. around rm37 per 4L. but for white cement was told Davidco 6kg one less likely turn yellow.

You asked about epoxy type. So, this Sika is epoxy type and not just about waterproofing.

One more thing. The problem with white or light color epoxy resin is that they can easily gets yellowish. This is common on any epoxy based grout. On the other hand, the colored epoxy grout may stain certain type of tile. So, need trial I guess

hmm i though the perks of epoxy is that it doesn't turn yellowish easily like white cement?

that epoxy is waterproof so i'm saying waterproof combo cement cost alot more. Sika Tile cement 88 cost rm13 per bag. Sika Tile Cement Water Proof Part B cost rm80 per bag.

if you buy a Sika 88 & a Davidco Waterproofing cement Part A + B (rm37 per liter), it's cheaper as you just need a thin wet layer of waterproof cement then use normal tile cement.

i saw some tile shops got tons of color choices for their grout not sure what material, got a piece of sample with many colors like paint catalog. but i never seen people or shop use it though.
