@benny888
I'm going to give it a shot at rooting and installing custom roms.
I have read through the thread considerably and also read the xda-developers forum link that you have put up.
However, I do have a few questions.
1) Is there a "Correct" rooting method? I used to use an iphone and there were a few "Jailbreak" methods that would cause ur phone to be unable to update your firmware anymore. Wonder if this is applicable to Android? Cause I notice there is "Manual" rooting and "Easy" rooting
2) What should I prepare and do before rooting? I'm using stock rom and I bought my tab from Maxis. What program should I use to backup my stuff?
3) I noticed the heavily discussed custom rom is Overcome and Modocco? Which is better ? (I'm a new user btw so just let me know which has better performance).
4) Will updating to a custom ROM disable me from updating to a newer version of OS in the future? (Eg: Gingerbread / Honeycomb? )
5) Also, I noticed in the FAQ at xda developers they mentioned that these custom ROMS have regular updates and the updates can be done easily without hassle (just update it online and done). Is this applicable to Modocco and Overcome?
6) You mentioned that after rooting, I need to install apps to enhance my tab's performance. Do you have any recommendations for this that would bring "huge" performance increase?
Thank you for your input and feedback. Trying to research as much as possible in order not to brick my tab. I understand that bricking happens only when you screw up the bootloader (or was it kernel?) and only certain actions will do that. However, would just like to understand further to avoid the problem from happening
1. You can try the easiest method Z4root first. If yours is a Malaysian set, most probably you need to use SuperOneClick. If you need to use S1C, make sure your Tab can be detected by your PC as most failures are due to such failure
2. Rooting will NOT spoilt your TAB> No need to worry about it. Just in case, make a backup copy of your important files/data which you keep on internal SD card. As your TAB is not rooted yet, you cannot use any 3rd party apps to backup yet - another good reason why you should root it
3. Both Overcome and Modaco are EXT4 based roms. I have explained about this in my blog why one should consider switching to EXT4:
http://leemn.wordpress.com/2011/01/27/gala...daco-rom-beta1/As a new user, I'd suggest first that you do not consider these roms. Stick to roms that still use the default Samsung's proprietary RFS file system. Rotohammer JMI is a good start - please refer to the quick guide I have posted in post # 3 to the links. REMINDER - when you flash a different rom, ALL your apps/data will be wiped out clean
4. NO ; you can always revert back to original before upgrade to the newer offerings. Anyway I believe the rom cooks will be offering their own versions of HC and GB too
5. YES - updates are easily done . EXT 4 based - just flash from recovery , no need to use Odin on PC. RFS based - still need Odin on PC
6. After rooting - the biggest improvement are in kernel changes and customized roms.
Minor improvements are in apps related to changing system settings - eg setcpu ( cpu tuning ) , battery life improvement apps - several available, disable ads on apps, voice activated google navigation, backup and restore apps with tweaks, apps to improve performance - cache etc, access to more free and paid apps in paid apps market etc
Make sure your TAB has good charge before attempting flashing, I'd suggest a minimum 50%. Bricking TAB is unlikely as most users here will confirm. If it does happen, don't panic - we will try to help. As long as you follow instructions closely you will be fine. Ask and clarify first before start. Read the XDA forums about other user attempts
