Hi benny,
Just curious is there no any way (yet) to unlock this locked TAB by US telcos?
Even the locked iphone (if not mistaken) possible to unlock it and use any country.
*
YES it can be done BUT the US telcos are only selling the TAB with their data plan solely fror business reasons. So one would need to get another line for voice calls. Iphone in USA are tied to telcos with voice/data plan together

On your step 3, If not mstaken any new ROM flash with CWM should save at mirco SD card.
This because most of the TAB ROM will wipe the whole data at internal SD card. this bit difference with SGS flashing method.
Anyone here can confirm this?

When do we have this kind of gathering with Tabbers?
I really don't know and not really notice this have annouce before.
Where could i access this latest info from?

BTW, what normally monthly MobileFest gathering 'chit-chat' abt?
*
CORRECT - the zip rom file MUST be save on external microSD card. I assume he knows it already

Any new rom flash will wipe clean the internal SD card. It will not wipe provided you are flashing an update rom zip file by the same rom developer. Actually looking at the size of the zip file , one will know whether is a full rom zip or update zip. A full rom zip ranges from 180 to 220 MB while a typical update zip is about 10 to 30 MB.

Wong - can you organize one ? I suppose you are from KL - maybe easier for you to arrange ? I posted this several pages back

This MobileFest is actually a monthly gathering started few months back. Most of the regulars are very experienced mobile enthusiasts . We started to meetup one another since 1999 when PDA's were still new - then it was Palm, Psions, Symbian and Windows CE . We started meeting each other under the Klang Valley Palm User Group ( website already ceased ) . In between we have meetups under MyPdaCafe.com ( already ceased) and current MacFest - forum Lowyat Apple's group and mymug.org. I have been attending such meetups for the past 12 years if it matches my monthly schedule to KL ; sometimes I change my schedule just to match these meetup dates. What we do is basically talk about latest gadgets development, makan n minum, share ideas, play with one and other's gadgets, share knowledge not allowed in the forum ( you know what I mean ), sometimes we have invited guest doing short presentation on latest software/gadgets etc

Hey bro.... are you using stock ROM?? I faced the same issue also... very disappointed! sad.gif(
Change the network to GSM only dont seem to have this problem.

Now upgrading to JM4 and hope it solves this issue. Otherwise will need to try flashing to other custom ROM.

This could be related to network /location not so much the rom. I am saying this based on my experienced using Android phones besides the TAB. But one thing for sure is any of the popular cook roms ( Roto, Overcome and Modaco ) is one up above the stock rom. You want better performance, slicker faster UI - upgrade to EXT4 file system roms such as Overcome or MOdaco

Thanks for the heads up. Performance and UI aside, its the data network on WCDMA that is actually giving problem. Data transferring is stucked too often and you can see there's only outgoing data and no incoming. The data will timeout after a period and it will reconnect automatically or you disable/enable the mobile data manually, then the data will be back to normal.

It's confirmed not network tower nor the location problem as I tried using the same simcard on other phone and it works without data dropping.

I've just done factory recovery and the problem still persist. So it's either hardware problem or the ROM.

Added on February 18, 2011, 2:59 pmEDIT: Oh damn, upgrading to JM4 didnt solve the data issue :'(

New features found in JM4:-
1. Social hub is now included
2. Calculator is also included
3. Samsung Mobile Tracker is included, can be found under security setting.

KL is my 'hometown' and I actually stay and work at Klang. I don't think we need to gather certain amount of people to have this gathering. It's good opportunity for who interested to share or just want to join together. Even 2 or 3 people interested, i think it sufficient gather together. Doesn't need to book conference room of any restoran or hotel, even a mamak store is the good place to chit-chat together. You may just base your own schedule travel to KL and announce to other TABBERS here who interested to join. Although this just my own opinion and may not accept by others. However, beside discuss abt TAB, it's no harm for me to meet some interesting people like you. biggrin.gif

it would seems that the latest firmware from samsung JMx, has 'locked' the phone. so u can't root using zroot. not sure about the other 2 methods posted on benny's blog. anyone tried yet?

btw any knows whether normal usb charger with slightly lower ratings will work on the tab? i.e 5v/1000ma, instead of the recommended 5v/2000ma?

TQ

YES - you can use 5v/1000mA this is the minimum. Anyway any compatible cigarette lighter or desktop charger is cheap - as long as it can charge the ipad it can charge the TAB. My USB cigarette lighter only 1000mA and infact I find charge the TAB equally well - I also use it to charge my previous ipad and Dell Streak

Few Msian users in this forum with JMx firmware has successfully root using superoneclick . Sure can work - if cannot usually means your PC fail to detect TAB. Troubleshooting this please refer my post #3 for solutions. Don't assume the TAB is detected by the PC

1. Unsign bootloader first using Chainfire patch
2. You can change to Modaco kernel R3 and maintain the default RFS fs while keeping the Roto rom
3. OR you can change to Modaco Kernel R3 and sametime convert to EXT4 fs
With a change to EXT4, you can directly flash new roms ( example Overcome, Modaco ) from recovery - no need to use Odin in PC

Copy from XDA forum:

EXT4 version

To use the EXT4 version (i.e. you are already running EXT4 or you wish to convert)...

* Download the EXT4 TAR file from below
* Flash using ODIN (version 1.7, do not select the 'repartition' option)
* IF YOU NEED TO UPGRADE TO EXT4: Your device won't reboot normally - that's OK, just turn it off (hold down power button for 5 seconds)
* IF YOU NEED TO UPGRADE TO EXT4: Load recovery - turn the device on with 'volume up' held
* IF YOU NEED TO UPGRADE TO EXT4: Your device will now perform the EXT4 conversion - depending on the volume of your data, this can take a while, so be patient
* Reboot, you're done!
* Optionally download the kernel modules zip (for TUN/CIFS) and copy to a location of your choice

what does the last instruction mean ? kinda blur on this...plus, when flash using ODIN, where to put that EXT4 TAR file ? PIT, PDA, PHONE or CSC ?

These are optional files. You flash it under recovery mode after you have flash the kernel R3. Somebody mentioned several posts down that if you don't understand this, then you won't need it. I don't really understand too - so I disregarded it

Anyway I try to explain in layman's terms : TUN ( aka tunnel) is more for those users who works with OpenVPN systems. CIFS is Common Internet File System is started by and considered a political attempt by Microsoft in the mid to late 90's to rename the "mapping drives" to be part of SMB ( Server Message block ) to something that sounds like they've "taken over the world". At the time, there was the argument that FTP or NFS were just as valid contenders as SMB for that name, especially since FTP works way better "over the internet" than either SMB or NFS. If all this sound like Greek then just ignore it - you don't need it
