looking for gingerbread screen-off animation..is there any1 manage to port it?
*
I'd like that one too. But so far only for gingerbread. need to be patient with supercurio and cyanogenmod team

QUOTE(Bap3 @ Jan 14 2011, 10:15 PM)
i installed TW gtg with  5 docks..suddenly all my stock apps disappear from apps drawer...e.g contact, dialer..how can this happen?..how to revert back?
*
That's odd. I use it myself but have no problem like you said. How exactly did you install touchwiz gtg?

QUOTE(qdipanda @ Jan 14 2011, 10:53 PM)
hi guy...do u all got enable the BLN?? i enable it, i tried to receive sms and missed call...nothing happen...sad.gif
*
I used to enabled it but not now because I find it to drain battery alot. Like some one said, try rebooting and install the BLN control app

QUOTE(thereefster @ Jan 14 2011, 10:54 PM)
i just enabled lagfix on my sgs, nothing changed...maybe it just me..
*
Which lagfix? Using ext4 instead of samsung's stock RFS will give you extra read/write speed that comes from inherent advantage of ext4. There will be no difference in smoothness (like swiping the homescreen left and right) but for app that uses a lot of read/write, database(like newsrob), installing app(when restoring app from titanium), you'll see huge difference.

It used to be that ext4 drains more battery and wears more than RFS. But as someone here quoted hardcore's statement about the optimization he made to ext4. If that is true, there is no reason to not use ext4.

QUOTE(roci @ Jan 14 2011, 11:01 PM)
yes my sgs oni can last to 8 hrs oni.. i heard from this thread, some of them can last for 2 days?  blink.gif

ive check my task manager 1.51 there is no running apps.. but the RAM used always approx 240 / 399 mb? is that normal?

im vr2 curios rite now.. can last oni 8 hrs without doing anything.. what if i make a call or else..  rclxub.gif

btw... where can i find the dxjpa modem? did the 2 days guy also use this modem?

really need some sifu advise here...  biggrin.gif
*
All I can say is recalibrate your battery - drain, full charge delete battery stats using sgs tools app.
Go to Settings > Applications > Running Services to see what background service is running
Install os monitor too see which app is causing the cpu load.
Try different modem. Different area gives different radio strength, thus better energy efficiency. Some modem like JPP may be better but consumes a lot of power. This is a guide from pele78. Try different modems and see which one suits you the best.

QUOTE(kswong7660 @ Jan 14 2011, 11:27 PM)
very very strange issue u got there my friend,as for me my batt life can last for nearly 3 days with few calls and sms and also check for app update in market,FYI im on DXJPE with speedmod kernel and i recommend u to use ES task manager and place the widget on ur homescreen and always tap on it b4 u lock ur screen,as for me my min free ram is always 140++ mb when phone is idle and when i clear my task using ES task manager widget i surely get min 190++ mb free ram, just download it from market and u don't have to do any settings...trust me it really works and helps ur batt life
*
excessive use of task manager may lead to more battery usage. only use it for misbehaving app. It helps for short term only. I used to install autokiller(not a task manager, but it manages the minimum limit of free ram for froyo) to increase the smoothness of the phone. I don't know how relevant it is now since the advent of speedmod and others. I don't think many people in xda uses it anymore. Maybe because we got bigger ram from speedmod (339MB)

QUOTE(jujx @ Jan 15 2011, 02:14 AM)
SGS is much tougher than you know, its super hard to brick if you have 3 button recovery
*
Very true. Even if it happens, in xda, they use hairdryer and some homemade jig to go to download mode when their phone bricked.

QUOTE(flawless_333 @ Jan 13 2011, 09:13 PM)
so which one is better? EXT4 or RFS?
*
RFS - Samsung crappy file system
EXT4 - build upon the reliable and most used in linux - EXT3 file system. It is open source, one of the better speed (at least in benchmark) and heavily developed.

EXT4 FTW

QUOTE(thereefster @ Jan 14 2011, 11:24 AM)
where can i get adb for 3 buttons fix?
*
By downloading android sdk. Link

my phone stuck at the home screen, the screen with the samsung logo on it...what should i do??
*
I think is is better to narrate eveythting that you did. It will make it easier to point out where the problem is and give you the solution.

QUOTE(StarSaber @ Jan 14 2011, 04:33 PM)
Guys...

It has been 1 week since I flash my SGS to Darky's v8.0 Gingerbread Edition Wipe using Odin3 v1.3 and 512.pit. My SGS show:

Firmware version: 2.3.1
Baseband version: I9000XXJPY
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 wasted@box #8

Its damn fast and Im really happy compare to the stock firmware.

But Ive two issue:

1. Battery drain fast: Its been a week now. The longest time it can last is 17 hours.

I use my SGS mostly for scrolling like nobody business, play angry birds, browse internet, sms or chat and that's about it. I seldom download app as my app now are more than enuff (for the time being, hehe).
Ive try a lot of way (including the FAQs way) to calibrate the battery but so far.... no improvement.

2. GPS useless.

I have tried the FAQs as well....but still cannot use. I can only use the google maps only which just like what i've used on my Nokia E66.

Hope the sifus can help me here.

Cheers!  icon_rolleyes.gif

Firstly, you know you are using Froyo, now gingerbread right wink.gif
I think 17hrs with thhat kind of usage is quite ok. What do you guys think?
galaxy s has crappy gps chip. Try flashing different modems to see which one is best.See this guide from cypher guide

Lol, I use TeamViewer 6 to do that. And also Orb Live to watch/listen to my media on computer. Pretty cool live streaming.

Definitely okay. For me, I get like 16 hours of battery life with a couple hours of calls, 100+ texts, couple hours of gaming or apps and an hour of random usage like web browsing. I never get 2 days or 3 days like some of the users here.

Hey guys, found a new home launcher that's simple and nice. I like launcherpro cos I can hide unused apps icons. This one does that too. It has it's own facebook/twitter widget on homescreen but it's called dashboard. Only negative thing is that I can't read chinese letters on the facebook updates.

Not necessary. UV doesn't give much battery saving time for me. In fact it does gives instability to me like certain Gameloft games freeze after sometime. OCing makes the whole phone a little smoother but not worth it for me. I just don't see the point.

speedmod k12m is out ... might wan to check it out ..

QUOTE(StarSaber @ Jan 14 2011, 10:13 PM)
R u sure its ok....coz ive been reading this thread and remember that somebody (same firmware like me) the battery can last up to 2 day & several hours! Thats y i tot mine not ok.

On the wifi, do i just use ODIN and then change the MODEM only or there is an actual way?

Btw, Ive already flash the speedmod k12l-500hz. Let see how long it will last this time....
*
yea one of them is me, and that was while i was using official firmwares of DXJG4 and DXJPA, even last up to 3days+ ... but for custom rom no, coz alot of customization and optimization implemented, for the speed u have to sacrifice something else ...
17hrs for me is good, and usually my phone can last even longer .... brightness set to low, no background sync, disabled data network, super duper heavy texting, roughly an hr calls daily ...
its li-ion battery, just charge whenever there is a plug and charger with u, it is safe to do so ... but dont let the battery to go under 10% which is unhealthy for the li-ion batteries ... lazy to dig out the thread about li-ion batterys, sorry dont have the source ..

1st question, y do u wan to use JPO? instead of the newest official firmware of XXJPY?

just imagine a PC ... if u overclock, it works great but produced alot heat too but no fear, u can install ventilation fans or even water cooling systems but for a phone sweat.gif .... if u underclock, phone consumes less battery but if u r a gamer or heavy user it might slow down the speed so hmm.gif ... best is stay at default clock, best of both worlds as long as its smooth, nice and frozen yogurt like ... thumbup.gif

about the JPA wifi modem update .. its a fix by hardcore ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=885903
both update modem files of DXJPA and XXJPY is inside so u can switch and have a test urself ..
i am using the jpa fix without any issues on my specs below ...

Some info, through my own experience and also reading from other threads and forums ... no sources coz i read it last time ...
Linux is an OS which is superb for developers, its free source and have a very good ram management. So as Android is based on Linux, android inherited the good ram management as well. If ur ram manager shows u r using alot of ram, just leave it to the OS to handle, it is recommended not to use any task killers. The OS will try to calculate the best fit of ram usage for u, all u have to do is clearly/completely close ur app if u have done using it to free up immediate ram, even if u dont do so, after some amount of time the OS will just kill it for u but of course the app gotta run in the background thus eating up battery before it is closed. There are some custom roms and kernels that optimizes this ram handling as well, so u can try it out and can be found at XDA forums.
Another thing is safe up ram is to ensure u dont have any background sync, disable them or set it to the longest time limit it has (unless u r really active or required), this could save up battery.
Save battery by using low brightness, since i got my phone the brightness setting is manually set to around 10%. I dont like the screen being too bright as it hurts my eyes (high astigmatism doh.gif), this of course is altered at different environment or usage. Some said switching to GSM from HSDPA/3G helps too.
Smoothness of phone, is it already confirm that the latest official firmware XXJPY is the fastest and silky smooth rom, thats for those who prefers to stay on official roms, take note u do not have chinese/malay as it is europe firmware. No worries though u can extract and manually install them easily. For custom roms, most of them are based on JPY base, different developers have their taste so u may wan to try them out one by one. What i did was each week different rom till i get satisfied with one of them. For those who wants to stay on asia firmware, there is one half-customized rom based on DXJPE in XDA, so u might wan to try that out too.
Hope this helps someone. icon_rolleyes.gif
