Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013)

I got to watched this in Sunway Pyramid Imax 3D...

First, the premise..

After all the vampire and werewolf movie, a witch movie is actually.... refreshing!

Gemma Arterton is eye candy... I mean and GREAT actor!! laugh.gif

Lots of action

Effects great

Apart from Hocus Pocus and Harry Potter, I cannot remember a wicth riding a broom scene and they did it very well

So effect is good

Gory, very gory movie

And as usual, the story...

It could have been a little tighter and it would have been a GREAT movie...

Good pop corn movie

Will not go into movie history as the greatest movie ever, but good empty your mind and enjoy, movie

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012)

Making an R rated comedy about the apocalypse isn't very profitable.

I didn't know anything about it.

Managed to watch it today and it is surreal??

Steve Carell headlines this and Keira Knightley co star.

As mention, surreal.

A meteorite is hulling to earth and all attempts to stop that had failed.

All the politicians, the rich and entertainer/sports persons, have left earth on the last space shuttle and all other little people on Earth to wait for end of days...

Steve Carell's wife had left him after the last fail attempt to deflect the meteorite, and he has no one. Keira Knightley his flaky neighbor.

Nothing about this movie makes sense and as stated above, poking fun at Armageddon isn't profitable.

The thing about Steve Carell's movie is... he tries too hard...

Half way thru, will update after the end

This is an utterly and thoroughly depressing movie.

It is a love story

It is DEFINITELY a chick flick

The further the movie progress, the more oppressed the viewer feels.

There is absolutely nothing redeeming about this movie

If you like depression, this is the movie for you...

Ive posted this in Argo thread, but anyways:

Just finished watching Argo.

This is arguably the best movie of 2012 (i havent watch Zero Dark Thirty, so yeah)

Great acting, great directing, great storyline, criteria that are usually missing in movies based on true story.

And as far as movies based on true story goes, this is THE BEST.

If you manage to find a copy of Argo, be it DVD or blu ray, please please please buy this movie!

If I have to give numerical rating for this movie, i would not be hesitant to give it at least a 9/10.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Just finished watching the movie.

Great romance/drama movie. One of 2012 hidden gem.

Go watch this movie! It has this nostalgic feeling especially if you're the kids of 80's and early 90's!

The Young Master 師弟出馬 (1980)

I LUV Jackie Chan stuff from the late 70s and early 80s...

There is something "eternal" about them

Case in point, The Young Master.

Having watched it for the first time many MANY years ago, I never notice how many Shaw Brother's regulars who are in this!! I believe in the 1980s, Shaw Brothers was "streamlining" their productions, and I suppose, actors have to eat.

I also notice that Jackie directed this, at the ripe old age of 26!!

As per his signature, comedy with Lion Dance, fighting scenes

The martial choreograph was good, maybe a little jade compare to today's standards, but seeing how they did everything practical back then (eg. not CGI) , I appreciate it.

The story is routine, and the highlights would be the fighting scenes

Like a blast from the past??, look no further.

Flipper (1996)

Not sure if any of you remember this. I'm not sure if this was ever released on DVD (I first watched it on Laser Disc). It is now available on Bluray.

First thing first, seriously, Elijah Wood looks EXACTLY here (1996) compared to when he was in, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), Sin City (2005), The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), many many years later...

I not sure if I'm suppose to admire that or to be freaked out!!! biggrin.gif

Paul Hogan does his usual sleep walk through the movie.

I'm still impress how they got all those shots from the dolphins(s).

Not a bad family affair

If you like the more recent movie, A Dolphin's Tale, you'll like this one as well.

Highlander (1986)

This is a cult classic.

And you know what is weird, it actually was alot better in my mind then it actually is!! smile.gif

It does not have the nicest transfer, but it does have it's moment.

The concept, the music, Christopher Lambert and most importantly Sean Connery.

Apart from an interesting story line the effects are actually cheesy.

Some scenes on HD, I can see the wire works!! I kid you not!! biggrin.gif

Again, a decent blast from the past.

House at the End of the Street (2012)

It is interesting to see Jennifer Lawrence outside of Hunger Games. Also Max Thieriot, whom I first notice in The Pacifier. He had since made some... interesting roles, first in undecipherable My Soul To Take and now this.

Not sure if he is trying to pull an Anthony Perkins, and have to add his choices have not been "conventional". Have to add that I am not suggesting that he does conventional.

This is a "different" movie.

It has been advertise as A and it turned out to be B...

Not sure if that help this movie in the box office (let me do a quick check). It did, it made money.

A lot of the movie depended on the young shoulder of Max Thieriot, I know he had been brave with his role selection, but am not quite sure he pulled it off here...

So to reiterate, story is decent, advertising is wrong, and delivery is average so...

A few scares and surprises, but at more skilled hands (directors and actors) could have been GREAT!!

A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)

Okay, let's get this out of the way first.

This is a fairy tale movie, American is all for World Peace and all that Jazz.

As long as you understand THAT, all is fine.

The premise of this movie is that THINNEST of the whole die hard series.

The first movie is about his wife, so is the second. The third is is about losing his family, the fourth is about his daughter so the fifth... you get the idea...

If you are a car lover, I implore you to NOT watch this movie...

Car... CARNAGE... BMWs, Mercedes... Porsche... none were spared...

Action galore...

And have to add... I still like the fourth one better...

One thing for sure Quentin Tarantino is a badass movie maker notworthy.gif
Not really masterpiece storyline as it is a remake of the 60's Django, but how Tarantino blend it with the touch of his trademark make it one of his best movie so far (heard this will be his last movie??)
The opening music already make you want to ride a horse.

The story is about a slave, Django. Who was free by a German bounty hunter/dentist Dr Schultz (hope i get his name right) and make him his partner. Soon after Django become the faster shooter in the west and the only black dude who ride a horse.
A long the way this two make a path to find and free django slave wife. This is where they meet The Candyland estate and slave owner Mr Candie (U jump I jump Di Caprio) and the wild wild west begin.

Jamie foxx as Django character is good but Dr Schultz played by Christoph Waltz (the nazi dude in inglorious basterds) was awesome. And of coz Mr Candie played by Leo Di Caprio, this dude can easily nabs an Oscar nomination.

This is quite a violent and racist kinda movie so to those who cant stand any of it is not recommend to watch this movie.

I give 4/5 star thumbup.gif

The Man with the Iron Fists (2012)

I don't think I can ever express, how BAD this movie is.

RZA says that he is paying homage to all the old Chinese Kung Fu movies.

In my opinion, he is insulting the genre.

This is suppose to be all star cast.

Jack Knife (Russell Crowe) thinks that he is tongue and check here, and have to add, in truth is both offensive and racist.

Lucy Liu cannot pull off Mama San.

Rick Yune can neither act nor good at pretending he can fight...

Dialogue, BAD.

Scoring by RZA is terrible.

Everything is seen from the POV of occidentals so, bad Bad BAD!!

Some of the fighting sequences are actually decent, even that, isn't enough to rescue is terrible, TERRIBLE movie

There seem to be some indication that they want to make part two...

Let's all pray, at your place of worship that, THAT does NOT happen....

Atrocious, simply ATROCIOUS!!

The Impossible. Eh, didn't like it. I just wasn't drawn into the whole family looking for each other drama, plus the kid was really annoying to me.

The Intouchables. French drama/bromance starring Dustin Hoffman and Mario Balotelli. Love it.

Just finished watching John Woo's Bullet in the Head

Dare i say it's much better than most modern Hollywood action movie. Even thought it got John Woo blueprint all over it, but it is not a plain action movie. It blend drama, humanity and reality of the situation at that time (Vietnam, Tiananmen Square). It's not a film for everybody. Though i don't really agree with the ending.

Why Hong Kong can't produce film like this nowadays? Today, it's all about romantic comedy, like fast food. Beyond the comedy, there's nothing. Even comedy genre back then (up until late 90's) was much better.

Also, it's easy to detect bad / plain HK film today just by reading it's title. Usually they will include some sort of silly pun as part of the title.
