Gear stripping is common. I sent my 1870 for repair last time because of gear strip. Luckily under warranty, RM0. Hehe.

Sorry to hear about that mike, this is the first time I've heard about a Tammy getting gear stripped (actually this is the 1st time I've heard of any lens apart from the 18-70mm kit getting gear stripped).

Does this mean any lens which uses the body's AF motor to focus will have a tendency to get gear stripped? Can't imagine this happening to a 85mm & 135mm ZA! OMG!

Not reli. Tendency for gear stripping if used with A700 is quite well known as the AF motor at high speed setting will cause gear stripping. But not all lenses are prone to this issue. The older 18-70 however though, is well known for this issue lol.

gear stripping can cause by many thing,
i) the hood might be tightly lock, and u have to use force to unhood, causing unnecessary stress on the gear during unhood.
ii) ur hand/finger acciendentally hold the focus ring/rubber jamming(withholding) the focus....
iii) drops, (during in bag, throw bag etc, swing) causing the gear inside may dislodge a little, little tiny bit, but during turn on, the motor burst to turn to infinity and FML. tongue.gif

sigh, today dunno why so poison to get nex5 and today i will be in fever oh.
