I have received an offer with Tokuyama, in Bintulu. Semicon industry. 8 months training in japan next january. 5 years bond. Salary 2k + 100/day allowance (if I'm not mistaken). Haven't discuss yet on the job scope, increments and other benefits. If I go for this, it is going to be my first job. I have always wanted it to be O&G sector, just like my late father and my two brothers. Be the first engineer in the family, as the other only worked as ship crew and technician. If I receive this offer, then it's going to be a 5 years bond. It wouldn't be wise to turn back to O&G after 5 years, right? 5 years experience in O&G already enough to get a way better job.

I am trying not to be picky. But I really wanna make a living out of something I love doing. But I can't stay jobless anymore.......

If u wanna join shipyard, y not consider shipyard in SG? shipyard industry in SG are reigned by mostly malaysians, definitely u can secure a job there, plus u get 2.5x in currency and high bonus (some say 10 months) also... just wanna give another better options.

U know what....your words there kept disturbing me day and night. Not exactly disturbing..but kept me constantly thinking. It's hard to make a decision. It is definitely not what I want, but opportunities doesn't always come. And yes, I am still on job hunting, I'm afraid I can't turn back after 5 years. If u know any vacancy, just any, be it internship, or trainee, anything in O&G pls do let me know. Thank you soo much for your advice..

Yeah..Samalaju industrial area.. O&G is always what I wanted to get in, so yes its what I love. Aiming for O&G even before I entered uni. My 1st choice is PE, second is CE, but I got in for the 3rd choice, Chemical-Gas. Doesn't matter anyway.  Even during the FEP, I know this is what I wanna do for a living. The technology fascinate me. Gosh I miss that place. So many things I could learn. 1 week is totally not enough...
About pay, salary doesn't matter bro..this is my dream. Why work just for money when u can earn it doing something u love? So, I'd leave. For O&G. I mean, if there's any offer..
I don't really mind the fact that it's a japanese company, I'd still go for it if it's an O&G company. 100% agree with u, job satisfaction, opportunities to work around the world, no bond, just what I want. It's my dream job. I don't have any commitment on anything else right now, I'm young, I'm not interested in relationship, I'm just very eager to work.  Just that the chance to get in is very slim.

congrats to those who is stepping ahead in their career..    So jealous of u guys.

For my grade they have both school and housing allowance.  School is aed35k per annum (which is not quite enough)  while housing is aed150k per annum (which I read is decent enough) .
By the way you are right about the cap for each grade. But I think they many people didn't (including myself)  is what they call market adjustment. So even if its max, they can put some amount for market adjustment.  For me I only manage to push my adjustment untill aed5k permonth only.

Regret for not choosing geology..

To tell you you the truth, I was never intended to take geology during my uni. I was force to do so (kind of) by my sponsor. But heck, I guess it turn out ok after all.
Those kind of events take makes you realized later in your life that there is this thing call destiny.

Same here. I actually asked for accounting for the Rancangan Bersama but the guy who interviewed me asked me to do Geology. Hated the course in Uni coz it was nothing but looking at rocks! Arghhh. I was really good at structural mapping though and when I came back, the put me to work on mapping and 3D modeling. Have not looked back since. I guess it's fate.

Geophysicist especially development geophysicist is in demand especially in my company (we don't have a lot of them). It depends on the scope required, in my company, the Geophysicist is not required to do QI, all of the QI work is done by another department. The development geophysicist here does nothing but do structural interpretation (in time). Depth conversion is done by another department. They are however responsible for well placement. A lot of the time spent deciding where to put the well. If you have 7 years experience, you may want to have a look at openings in my company (there's an App for that as well)

During the interview, you're like (what the heck is Geophysicist etc etc) but once you get the scholarship offer with the required degree that they want you to take, then it's a different story. All in all, during my time, Petronas only sent 2 students to do geology. One is now a big shot, while another (me) served my required bond and left

Physical Requirements

    Ability to lift 50 pounds - None of their tools weighed 50 pounds expect for the 20" centrollers and 8" sinker bar (Excluding their wireline tools)

    Ability to stand for 16 hours - Rubbish. None of their jobs requires the engineer to stand for 16 hrs. The closest task that requires this long standing period is during testing and rigging up your tool. None of these tasks exceed more than 6 hours and you can sit when you are testing the tools.If there's a time you need to wait, better hang in the accommodation and watch TV

Ability to sit for 16 hours - Who doesnt want to sit for 16 hours?

    Traversing a staircase multiple times for up to 16 hours - Don't get the wrong impression. The criterion sounds like you are reuired to do a 16 hr marathon up and down on the staircase. Again, you may need to go up to the rig floor on certain occasions but nothing came close to the 16hr jog up and down on the staircase.

    Grasp and hold hand tools and other types of equipment - Even a plumber also has to use handtools to fix the tap

    Be able to function mentally and physically with lack of sleep - Function mentally? Rubbish. Any post Form 5 polytechnic student can do the job. Probably the easiest job you will ever find in oilfield business. Lack of Sleep? Probably true, when you are doing singleshots when sliding in hole or your tool went bananas in the hole.

Does anyone know that Gyrodata is one of the companies that takes in fresh grads or engineers from non oilfield background? Happy hunting

Try Technip. My fren got in there last year, she's good with autocad n solidworks too. I don't think pdms is being used in uni..they give her training fr pdms.

I need some advice from you guys. I am in dilemma. I just started working as a project engineer, about 3 weeks, with an airline operator which pay me really well. I also receive an offer as corrosion and materials engineer with a local ong consultant company. the salary is about RM2.5k. The company is established about 2 years ago and they said they are expanding. The job scope is pretty much doing everything. From the technical work to the office work. I really want to be in ong industry. But right now I cannot decide. If I stay as a project engineer for a couple of years, is there a chance for me to get into ong? If I accept the offer, if there a chance for me to get higher pay later on? Is is secure/stable to work with small consultant company like this.

Dont really know which company do accept trainee engineer in materials corrosion, inspection field... cos normally they wan senior engineer in Malaysia, so far for the vacancies i searched la... But in US or other country, alot vacancies on graduate engineer in this field.. ><
