dude i think you've seen too much tv...
not everyone on the platform/rig is called an Oil Rigger
you so called rigger is one of the lowest level you can go in the entire hierachy of a drilling rig
so find out more on the whole thing before wishing to be something you dont really know about....

1 month on and 1 month off, you can do???
ok... i'll give you the benefit of doubt... but trust me you'll want to go less after that...
*
hoo weve come a long way anyway, biar la dia ingin masuk jd roughneck.no job can be termed "easy" so to speak.its always a challenge, about the pay environment etc etc.

anyway still the question lies how do you join it??x kisah la hard or easy i rarely see any ads for those positions nor ive known any companies/recruiters doing the rounds for it.

Read people. Theres a list of companies u can try in this thread. And theres even seniors who are willing to help, answers, and giving advise. Just dont be ridiculuous lah. Some stuff u can just learn before u ask. Like what bla3 stands for. Google lah. Dont just depend on people to answer u. U said u really wanna go into this field?then do ur homework.

true on all accounts but as far as acronyms goes anything can mean anything these days.so maybe thats why we need to ask the person them self what they meant.as for employment opportunities i think v1/v2 has a lot but maybe some questions still cropper up due to those companies already being tried by many of us(some may get some may not), and since there is still many left, we didn't know of them as well as the people whom are actually inside the circle would and we want that to(i mean who doesn't right).

I am relating to you the situation 5 years ago, I know they have changed the salary scheme for technical professionals. The starting pay for fresh grads has increased to 4K now. When I joined the company, it was RM2050 per month, so that's doubled after 15 years. They also implemented during my last 2 years there the technical allowance for specific skill groups such as SKG9, SKG10 (G&G and Petroleum Engineering) where you get a range of allowances for your technical skills (900 for Senior Execs, 1300 for Staff and 2500 for principal etc etc)

When Dato' Shamsul came on-board 2 years ago, he drastically changed the remuneration scheme, those in the technical ladder or in certain critical skill groups are got a 30% pay raise and (I'm not sure about this), a bump in bonuses and skill allowances (though I've heard that have been removed ... not too sure).

My colleague who is at the same skill level as me is earning close to 17K a month now so that was close to 2.5 times the salary when I left 5 years ago so they have changed a lot nowadays.

They have even allowed for ex-Petronas to return on a contract basis (3 years contract IIANM) and the salary is upwards of 30K and above per month. The previous CEO had some sort of vendetta against ex-staff where there is an unwritten rule where any subsidiary is NOT ALLOWED to hire ex-staff (this must be against the labor law but it was done nonetheless). That unwritten rule has been abolished as per the new CEO.

the previous one you mean datuk merican kah?or the one before him?

I tried for long time to get into O&G industry but always fail. And during my last try, I managed to land an interview and they hired me on the spot. I had no experience before and there was no technical questions at all during the interview. So that was luck and right timing. haha

All I can say is to keep trying and maybe one day you will get your chance.

I notice that forummers here only aim for BIG names and well known major players in the oil and gas industry and doesn't
have a very good knowledge and awareness on lesser known O&G companies.
Little do you know that these lesser known companies are more prone and likely to hire fresh grads compared to the big kahunas like
Shell, Petronas & Exxon Mobil.

Also, fresh grads shouldn't aim for operators only and instead focus your energy more on service hand companies eg Geoservices, Baker
Atlas, Halliburton, FMC, Cameron, Gyro, Scientific Drilling, Weatherford, Scomi (Malay's favorite company), MI-Swaco etc.
These companies are good career launching pad and forget about slugging it with ten thousands of candidates in SLB and
Shell.

Good luck hunting!
*
imo la(may be wrong) some of the comp youve listed bro is quite big themselves.even getting in those are harder by me.is there any smaller players then the above?(no disrespect meant by "smaller" but you get what i mean la)

keep trying preakz!lin fact lets all(the ones blom dapat) keep trying~ thumbup.gif im cramming someone/some companies mail box tiap mlm after work.

not to pour cold water, but be sure of what you really want before entering into O&G industry, as not everyone will offer big bucks in comparison with equivalent jobs in other industry.

and the industry is in sunset (well, some would say it's sunseting for the past 20 years anyway) especially in malaysia, so be willing to relocate

for some its the money, some the job, some the career it self and for some its many many others.what ever the reason may be good luck to all of us, yg dah masuk mahupun yg masih mencuba.

just out of curiosity, the m.east comps swooping experience up, wont that at least have a slight effect on companies we have here?

or is that our experienced engineers are still in good numbers companies not feeling that much of a pinch since when ever a job add comes up they want experienced ones.

Why do you think Petronas is suffering so much right now? We have sooo many young engineers but no one to train them. You have the senior managers, the general managers and then nothing in between. My ex GM keeps asking me to come back and train the new kids ...

Suffering woooo .... the most important thing you need in the Oil & Gas industry is the ability to make decision. This ability comes with experience. Without it, you end up delaying the process which costs money which leads to opportunity lost and what not.

When you have guys that has no seniors to tell them the ropes and all you have is a supposedly structured training for the last 5 years, you end up with people not sure if their technical analysis is correct, you end up with managers not being able to make the necessary decision because they themselves don't trust their subordinates recommendation. Ends up with the process being repeated 3-4 times before they make a decision. Before I left the company I went down to see a friend in Carigali, he had 5 young engineers around the table and everyone had no blood in their face ... I was wondering why, strewn across the table was the log interpretations, some maps and the drilling supervisor on the speaker phone ...

DS: Are we on target? We have reached the recommended depth .... should we perforate? The guns are ready ...

Team: Ermm .... ermmmm .... (everyone looking at one another)

Me: What the heck is going on ... is that the rig?

Team: Yes .... the wanted to perf now ...

Me: So what's the problem? Looked at the logs, confirmed the depth with DS, told my friend that based on my technical judgement, they are at the right depth and said that it will cost USD150K a day for the rig cost if you delay the decision ...

Team: Proceed with perf .... (by the way it cost around USD1 million for the perf smile.gif ) ...

That's why they were shitting in their pants .... but delaying the decision would have been a lot worse (an you still have to perf no matter what)

Turns out the decision was good .... well flowed 1500 barrels of sweet crude a day ...

Nowadays, I hear managers complaining every day that their subordinates really need some guidance ...

This is what happens when you pay peanuts .... you get monkeys.
*
hua...now thats big.well lets hope us fresh/semi fresh ones gets the opportunity somewhere to start and from there on build the knowledge and experience and who knows one day return back to the mother ship to help smile.gif

last few days every day i pass by the technip office...rasa mcm nak serbu masuk and ask why la none of my application successful tongue.gif

What positions have you applied?
*
various, any job opening needing a mechanical engineer i applied it also the opening being in malaysia(i dont think they would consider me for their offices/plant/work site out of malaysia)(but also noting the experience field, x dak la i blindly apply for manager or senior positions biggrin.gif )

if there is even internship opening oso i want to apply but jobstreet web doesnt allow.what im looking now is a platform to start.im also saving up a bit so that come dec i can take a twi+bosiet course to at least give a small mini boost.
