If fresh grad enter big 4, how long can they attain the assistant manager/manager position?
*
AA1 = Join / 0
AA2 = 1
S1 = 2
S2 = 3
S3/AM = 4
M = 5

Minimum 5 years to be manager unless you double promote.

Dear tendouSouji,

The fact that you are so concern bout the time you'll need to put for your work, just shows that you are not committed enough to be in BiG4.
Cause there is no "how many hours you work per day?" such of question.
It'll sound more logical "how many hours you get to sleep?"
Longest, I've work, 8.30am/9.00am untill 5am/6am for one entire week, continuosly. I look exactly like a zombie then.
And that is with me being in one of the less "stessful" department. So you can imagine how the others work.

Don't easily judge me like that, sounds offensive to me. I just wanted to know. And how many days do you have to work like that for a week? THanks for your reply.

peak period, Jan till April. (at least till 2am) My senior work for entire solid 3weeks....8/7am till next day 4.30am,go home, and then come back to work around 7am. But I was allowed to go back around 2.30+.

However, bout Dec onwards you'll already have terrible working hours, which I would deemed as VERY good already (12 to 1am)

And it very much depends on your engagement year end. And whether it is a reporting job or not.

Added on June 18, 2011, 12:25 amand one more thing. I think you should look for a firm, with nicer seniors rather than "nicer" working hours. Cause having horrible seniors, can make your "short" working hours into a nightmare too.
Trust me, this is a VERY good piece of advice.

Lemme give you an advice. Don't bother getting mentally prepared now. (though, I applaud your commitment)
Jump in, try to take the shit that happens, and if you can take it, stay. Words can say much, but it is the first hand experience, feeling the huge expectations, the confusion, and the exhaustion taxing your body, then you know whether you can take it or not.

Personally for me, January - early June is my peak period, on average every day work, (6 - 7 days per week, on average about 9am to 1-2am on weekdays, 11am to 6pm on weekends). But that's cos I'm a senior and I can manage my workload and bosses accordingly. Back when I was an associate it was (7 days a week, 9am to 2am every day).

Do note I'm considered one of the luckier ones smile.gif (I dare say one of the best in my dept, because my portfolio is relatively manageable and reasonably staffed) If you're unlucky (and you're more likely than not), like most of everyone is, you'd be putting in the mad hours everyone else talks about.

Is there a difference in workload/pay/career advancement between Tax and Audit and if so, what are the differences?

Also, for one contemplating an early career change to one of the Big 4, if I were to continue with my remaining three professional papers, what would the study leave be like? Can we arrange to go back early on one day per week to attend classes?

Don't look so highly upon yourself.

I used to think that I can take these hours too, I used to study like that too during college finals!

But when it comes to the real scene, fact that you're STILL sitting in the damn office doing endless tasks (especially admin works) while your colleague left one by one saying goodbye to you, while your non-audit friends are having a good chat at bars/mamaks, the feeling of helplessness and loneliness kicks in. That kind of feeling is unimaginable until you really experiences it.

BTW I'm still in audit yeah!

I'm prepared for that, if I want to escape, I can do it now, no one can stop me, it's still early. But I think audit is the right way for me, the job that suits me the most smile.gif And I don't look highly upon myself, I know what I'm capable of. I'm of course scared of it, but I'm willing to accept it.

In terms of workload, the peak period for Tax is much shorter than Audit. And on other days, depending on your workload and how you manage it, you can go home anytime you like as long as your job is done.

Pay - no difference

Career advancement - tax is a much more specialised field. harder to get jobs if you want to go commercial. Also, less promotions than audit (mostly because while audit have aa1 and aa2, it's just one rank (tax associate) for us)

study leave - only available if you sign a bond with the big 4. bond lasts about 4 years and grants you 5 days study leave + 1 day exam leave per paper.

attending classes - not sure how it works in audit, but in tax we just leave early (after 5.30pm of course) to go to class. then again if you leave early you better make sure your job gets done on time, even though you have to come in on weekends to clear it.

Auditors often think, we must finish our work before we go home. Therefore we work till late nights. Cause we fail to address that : there is no such thing as finish your work dy. Cause when u finish one thing, there is another, and another...then another.

I was seconded to the Business School in my firm for a month.
Funniest thing was during the first day, I tried finishing up all the work given to me while everyone went home at 5.30pm.
Cause as auditors, we must finish our work!
One fine day, at 6pm, the business school manager look at me and said, "what are u stil doing here? continue tomorrow. Go Home!"

Lolz. I told my mum, aft one mth here, I seriously dont know how to go back to auditors' life.

Just received a verbal offer for KPMG's TS. Woohoo.

Anyway, can anyone confirm if KPMG audits Net Edge Online (parent of Edge Financials)? That would be a great help!

Do u have audit bckground? For seniors the range is 3.8k (at least it used to) to 5.5k (2nd year seniors or AMs).

AS for managers it's 7k+ (bck then). Im not sure whether there is any revision for managers upward since. 7.5k seems reasonable lol

thanks thanatos! Actually, I've been in audit for 6years in another big4 firm (2yrs as audit manager). I just wanna know if the offer they gave me is already reasonable, whether i still have room for negotiation because now I don't have idea on the average salary of an audit manager among big 4 firms in malaysia.
