First you have to state the music you're interested in. Also, are you a beginner?
1) Different wood has different tone, so it all boils down to preference. For a strat-type guitar, alder is the common choice although some would prefer swamp-ash (more sustain but much heavier than alder). For Gibson-type of guitars, it's usually mahogany although some Epis are made with alder body.
2) For entry-level guitars, I would go for Korean/China/Indon-made Epiphone, Squier, LTD, Yamaha or even SX. As for beginner amps, Line 6, Roland, Vox & Fender's entry-level amps should give you the tone you want.
3) Your fingers determines how good the music your instrument produces. wink.gif
4) A good guitar, imo, is a guitar that's well-built, with decent electronics & pickups, have a good feel and reasonably priced.

Hope that helps. thumbup.gif

superdav > above all, define which music you like to listen to, and which music you'd like to play. Which band in particular do you have in mind ? Don't be shy !
Then we'll try to get you a setup with a "similar" sound to those guys wink.gif

The main thing is : there are certain families of guitars that will ease your playing toward a certain style, so first we have to narrow down all the specs and models you should be looking for.
you can then go in a shop, make your own choice and grab whatever your wallet allows you to laugh.gif It is very important you try the guitar and the amp, because you might feel superbly comfortable with a certain models (the opposite is true also)

a good guitar is a guitar that serves you well.... play it before you buy it...
some people prefer thick necks, some prefer thin ones....
some prefer hard tails, some prefer floating trems

hardware doesnt really matter imo.... you cn always change that afterwards...

santana rocks !
unfortunately i suppose your talking about recent santana recordings ? (supernatural and so on ... ?)
and not about his hottest latin jazz-rock 70's era sad.gif

so anyway, you might go for one of those guitars with HUMBUCKERS (magnetic pick-ups with TWO coils), instead of the guitars with SINGLE coil pick-ups.

So those models might fit you:
- yamaha aes : http://www.yamaha.com/guitars/aes/0,,CTID%253D600002,00.html
- ltd ec serie (or f / m / as series... all good !) : http://www.espguitars.com/guitars_ec.htm
- epiphone les paul (or you prefer g-400 ?) : http://www.epiphone.com/default.asp?Produc...&CollectionID=6
- ibanez RG serie : http://www.ibanez.co.jp/world/products/eg/...M_AM_a_e_u.html
- SX GG / Poison / ... serie (don't be afraid by the picture !) : http://www.sxguitar.com/gg_series.htm
- samick avion : http://www.samickguitar.com/electricportal_avion.html
- slammer (by Hamer) if you find them... (in CK music)
- shecter C or S serie : http://www.schecterguitars.com/menu_guitars.asp?guitartype=1

you can find all of those brands in or around KL (refer to the thread dedicated on where to find the right shops here: http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=162736 , 1st post)

choose by feel and by look, don't bother too much about specs. All those are reliable brands (even though i'm not so confident about SX, but i never tried them ! ) which will give you a good guitar to begin with.

For the amp, buy one in the store you tried the guitar. You can find cheap dirty "no brand" 15 Watts (like Drive, Red-something or stuff like this), and by taking a package you might end up with a really good overall price. If you want a quality small amp (and are willing to go to a diffferent shop and pay more), you can't go wrong with the entry-level amp of those brands:

Roland (Cube 15)
Vox (AD15VT)
Hugh&Kettner (Blues Edition 15)

However I do think that a cheap 15W will do the job, until you get more quids to buy a bigger one (30w or 50w).

Wow... I guess Pix's post should be more than enough to guide you now. thumbup.gif

The Roland Cube 15 and VoxAD15VT is priced at (approx.) RM450, that leaves you about RM1550 left for the guitar. I suggest you try out the Yamaha AES620 at Combo Mix, it looks very good & should sound even better. thumbup.gif

Good luck! laugh.gif

led zep > thx for giving the prices... i couldn't be sure that those hi-end 15W would fit in the budget. and you must wonder how come i've so much time to spare while being in tahiti laugh.gif actually i went surfing on the ocean this morning (or rather... tried to surf ! i just started), i'm quite exhausted to do anything else for today. hehehe

evo.com > mmm... it's mostly a matter of price unfortunately... yet i used to find 15W plenty enough for bedroom-solo usage !

Pix, next time when I need help on gears, please go surfing. tongue.gif Must have been fun anyway, how's the weather over there?

I second evo.com's suggestion on getting the 30. I've compared the Cube 15 and 30 (Almost side-by-side) and imo the 30's far superior to the 15. The sound's much more 'open' and not to forget has more amp models. The Plexi and JC models sounded very good, especially the JC, add a light touch of chorus and instant Larry Carlton. thumbup.gif Haven't compared it to the AD30VT tho.

superdav007, I'm not too sure but here's a rough estimation of prices
Yamaha AES820 - RM1800++ (Combo Mix)
Yamaha AES620 - RM2200++++ (Sold at Combo Mix KL & Euphony, Ikano's Power Center)
Epiphone Les Paul Standard - RM2200+ (At Rhapsody Mid Valley, you could get a free hard case)
Epiphone Les Paul Goldtop (With P90 Pickups) - RM2300+ (Also at Rhapsody MV, you'ill get a free case)
SX Les Paul - Less than RM1000 I would assume?

Not really sure about the rest. But you can check the prices at http://www.wwbw.com for rough estimation.

As for amps :
Vox AD15VT & Roland Cube 15 - RM450
Vox AD30VT & Roland Cube 30 - RM900+
CK Music is the official distributor of Vox products while you could get the Roland at Rhapsody or The Guitar Store.
Some demo clips for you : thumbup.gif

http://www.roland.com/products/en/CUBE-30/demos.html

If you're still confused, feel free to ask some questions! thumbup.gif

yea for the cube 15 and 30 theres a huge difference....
volumewise they're prettty much the same but you get much more stuff on the cube 30 and the dist is much better....
you can go up to 5-6 without the speakers breaking on you

same goes for the ad15.... sounds thin and ermm.... dunno how to describe... the kind of sound you get when u turn ure tone knob down
