Have a Maxtor 40gb ATA66 hdd here.
Running on a rig and suddenly windows crashed....not able to access windows anymore since then and trying to format the hdd.....Always failed at the halfway and subsequently getting worse.

There are 2 partitions in this 40gb hdd and the non-windows partition still working pretty well while I not able to format the windows based on partition.

Any solution?
Tried with winxp pro sp2 cd, not working.
Plug into my rig and try to format that particular partition, I'm not able to format it too.
Already backup all the data. Any solution for me to try?
Low-level format?

did your RAM usage full ? (hard disk keep blinking even in idle)
check your device manager for poper driver install
and make sure you use 80pin ide cable for the 20gb disk (little performance boost)

best way to preserve your hdd is to have enough ram. depending on your usage. those applications which need lotsa ram for example games, photoshop, 3dmax. This because enough ram will avoid using your hdd for temporary storage. Have u seen a 128mb ram machine run multiple tasks? scary man.

Power Outages In The Midst Of Defragmentation

A relatively rare cause of HDD failure is a power outage in the middle of a defragmentation but I have seen it happen and even though the damage is non-permanent in most cases, it may require a low level format which results in complete loss of all data.

my old hdd gone fly kite when there is a sudden power failure during defragmentation... damn tenaga !!!

now using western d,
before wd, i'm using maxtor and seagate.
maxtor got bad sector and sent to rma but the comp shop exchanged the wif a seagate.
the seagate die suddenly and i dunno why??? lost my all data...

how to kill the hdds is not important.
but make sure the data can't be recovered in the dead hdd is most IMPORTANT.

Well talking about dead HDDs, I am pretty worried about mine.

Since I changed casing, my HDD temp is, well appaling.

THis is due to the silent setup of my casing, therefore the front fan is actually quite weak from what I see.

My old iCute casing with aeroplane fans in front game my HDD temp around 40+ degrees.

Currently my HDDs now are at 48 degrees most of the time, sometimes incraesaing to 50 degrees. And I am talking about the HDD temp. itself, not the chipset, the chipset is normally a good 3 to 5 degree higher than the HDD temp.

So is this safe? Should I forget the silent setup and swap the fron fan with a powerful fan?

I stack 4 HDD in a row, because my casing got 5 slots, hence the temp is pretty high.

Can any of this method destroy my laptop hard disk?

1) Use a hair dryer to blow beneath the hard disk of the laptop
2) Use a industrial magnet (big one)
3) Use a hammer and knock on the hard disk

What more? Any good suggestion? icon_rolleyes.gif

Throw it down the building. Give it a pepsi treat. Cook it in the microwave oven with your maggi mee. You can do so many things to destroy it. An alternative to let the HDD go, give it to me and you'll never see it again. tongue.gif

I want to ask something. is it inside the hdd is vacuum? and if you run your laptop in an air-conditioned room, will the air inside the laptop condense and damage your laptop, as well as the hdd if it is not vacuum?
