Hello forumers, I really got a weird problem which I found it ridiculous. I never experience or heard about cases like these before.
I recently bought a Western Digital 2.5" 60GB HDD. I use the HDD in a cheap external casing mainly for storage porpose with use with my laptop. After a few days, I found that the HDD will seem to stop responding if I touch(i mean gently touch) the casing. Moreover, the data will be badly corrupted if I transfer files while touching the HDD's casing. The data will be 1-5% corrupted if I do not touch it. Then I checked more in detail. The HDD will not be detected if I place it on the floor. Once in a while, a "Delayed Write Failure" message will popup in the taskbar and I need to reconnect the HDD to the computer. Out of all these problem, I went to the shop and I complained. After all the checking, I was amazed that HDD worked as if it is the best in the world without a problem even on my own laptop(which I am using). Conclusion, the HDD and its enclosure is 100% working. To make the story short, I found that the HDD works perfectly if I use batteries only on the laptop. Whenever I use the adapter, the HDD gives problem. It is against the myth that batteries may not provide sufficient power to the HDD. I know my problem is lengthy but give me some suggestions. I never seen such weird problem for all these years of computing. Sorry for being lengthy and thanks for helping... |

hmm... quite amazing... Btw, is there any suggestions or is it I have to dump the adaptor into the bin? This post has been edited by mengsuan: Feb 3 2006, 12:24 AM |

QUOTE(leeshock @ Feb 10 2006, 06:03 PM) Hi, I am new here and this is my first message. I confirmed that that putting a magnet doesnot wipe out yr HDD. I accidently put my notebook next to a speaker driver (woofer) overnight, in my desk drawer. Note : I had to change the driver due to some speaker problems. Didn't realise that till the next morning. When I took out the notebook and the driver was directly beneath the HDD part of the notebook All modern HDD has resistance to magnet to many thousand gauss. At most time, HDD will never be affected by magnets.Notebook still working and I still have my data. This post has been edited by lex: Feb 13 2006, 11:44 AM |

I just plugged in my 2.5" WD HDD into the laptop to check it's SMART status. Everything looks ok but there are 115 Reallocated Sector Count. Speedfan online diagnostic adviced me to backup data and get a new disk. This disk was actually used in a problematic HDD enclosure. Does this mean that my HDD is dying? Maybe because of my lousy cheapskate enclosure, it has caused the reallocation. Can I un-reallocate the sectors by writing zero or formatting?
p/s: Don't use cheapskate enclosures.. They give headaches. |

QUOTE(ff7yta @ Apr 12 2006, 08:56 PM) cheap enclosure's chipset will give u the headache by not giving data at all... U should listen to speedfan and get a new disk... Wa... that disk is less than 6 months and it cost me 300++ for that 60GB. To RMA, there is not enough reallocated sector count, I think. |

QUOTE(saintsoul @ May 21 2006, 12:52 PM) Off topic... Lifetime warranty? Is there any manufacturer providing lifetime warranty for HDD? If you bought it from a shop, the shop will help you RMA in the 1st year. Other remaining years, you'll have to pay the shop or send the HDD yourself.Sorry, just borrow this space awhile. Where can we claim our warranty?lifetime waranty from manufacturer?Agent or HQ? |

QUOTE(Mcrae @ May 30 2006, 12:19 AM) Guys wanna ask u all, if when running the comp, than suddenly TNB current blackout/ house ELCB tripped, than the comp also sure off straight away. Possible. Especially if the HDD is being accessed(read/write), the blackout may cause a scratch on the platter thus damaging the disk. But so far, for me, I have not encountered such problem. Wanna ask will that spoilt my hdd ? |

QUOTE(sapstar @ Jun 20 2006, 11:22 PM) hi there, Yes! I'm using North Bridge: Intel® 855GME, South Bridge: ICH4-M. There are 3 drivers. atapi.sys, intelide.sys and pciidex.sys. I already have intelide.sys in this case. So, what should I do? Ah, you should have appeared earlier. I have actually solved this problem by buying a new RM 50 enclosure. The cap ayam enclosure is in my desk.got same problem as you. delayed write failed. the dreaded error message keep popping out when i try to write any file to my 2.5" seagate momentus 40GB in housed in 'ayam' brand enclosure. after 2 weeks i finally managed to sort the problem out. my solution only applies if you're using ich4 or ich5 southbridge, found on boards using intel chipset. i'using thinkpad r51 with intel 852/855 with ICH4M southbridge. first check the driver of your IDE ATA/ATAPI controller in Device Manager. if the Intel 80xxx controller is using pciide.sys driver, high chance you'll get delayed write fail because of this. you can refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322359/ for details. you need to use the intelide.sys for your controller to solve the problem gud luck Edit: Oops... the driver that you mentioned is pciide.sys but mine is pciidex.sys This post has been edited by mengsuan: Jun 21 2006, 03:36 PM |

QUOTE(hackwire @ Oct 12 2006, 10:24 AM) Can any of this method destroy my laptop hard disk? Throw it down the building. Give it a pepsi treat. Cook it in the microwave oven with your maggi mee. You can do so many things to destroy it. An alternative to let the HDD go, give it to me and you'll never see it again. 1) Use a hair dryer to blow beneath the hard disk of the laptop 2) Use a industrial magnet (big one) 3) Use a hammer and knock on the hard disk What more? Any good suggestion? |

QUOTE(lswang @ Nov 18 2006, 10:12 PM) I want to ask something. is it inside the hdd is vacuum? and if you run your laptop in an air-conditioned room, will the air inside the laptop condense and damage your laptop, as well as the hdd if it is not vacuum? No. Our HDD are not in vacuum. There are small little holes with filter if you have closely inspected your HDD. As long as the temperature change is not great (>10C), there won't be any problem. |
