QUOTE(CGLegacy @ Aug 24 2011, 11:34 PM) .... how much faster can it go??? Depends how much time you're willing to put in, and how much functionality you want. Slitaz installed on a HD with FAST_BOOT_X is probably the fastest thing around. Problem is, it's a small project and has small repos, hence you'll need to do a lot of source installations for apps you prefer. It also lacks support for some hardware, particularly new stuff (especially wireless chipsets). If you want a mature project with package management and big repos, then GRML is the way to go if speed is everything for you (yes, it blows Arch + quick-init away). See my post on this thread (gutterslob) for details, though it's recommended you have some experience in administering and maintaining a Debian Sid rolling release beforehand. In addition (if you know how), you can rebuild all your installed packages, which gives a tad more responsiveness. The final method is installing a source based distro like Crux, Gentoo, Sorcerer or LFS. It's fairly time consuming, and you'll probably screw up on your first try. The upside is you'll have a distro and apps perfectly suited to your particular machine thanks to compile flags and other optimizations performed during installation, though the difference in speed is pretty minimal compared to the GRML method above, in my experience. I personally prefer sorcerer because of the syntax (also cos I was involved in it previously), but I'm biased. QUOTE Since i didn't tried a lighter linux distro, please someone enlighten me on which part is it lighter??? Bootup / Task processing / Opening programs??? Boot: Slitaz = 5 - 6 sec on standard HDD. probably faster on SSD, but I've not tried. GRML (using my method above) = 7 - 10 sec, depending on hardware, all standard HDD. 4-5 seconds on my SSD. Arch + quick-init = around 9-10 seconds, but highly unstable system. Arch + systemd + e4rat = 10 - 11 sec. Much more stable than quick-init. Sorcerer or Crux = around 7 - 11 second mark. Task Processing: Dunno what you mean, but if it's memory footprint, I can go as low as ~40mb on fresh boot (for 32 bit architecture) on a laptop with wireless and bluetooth drivers installed, minimal daemons loaded and a lightweight WM on any of the above-mentioned distros. Lower still if it's a desktop that doesn't need restricted gfx drivers. A bit less than double that if 64bit. Of course, all times are for systems without bloated crap like plymouth, GDM. I also don't use desktop environments and prefer lightweight window managers like Openbox, EvilWM, ScrotWM, xMonad...etc. It'll definitely take longer on Gnome or KDE. Opening programs: Source based distros have the lead here, thanks to cflags and such. the downside is that compiling takes a long time (try 5 hours for Firefox on a 5 yr old pentium... give or take), but they still aren't much faster than my GRML or Arch installed apps. Some apps on Gentoo or Sorcerer can use less memory, like mplayer for example, if you compile it without all the stuff you'll never use (like IR remote support, etc). Hope this helps. A Gentoo or Sorcerer tutorial would probably give me broken fingers before I finished typing it... an it would still blow your comp up all the same. Also, most of this I learned from others (real gurus) throughout the years. Credit to them. This post has been edited by G-17: Aug 25 2011, 02:40 AM |

Sorry for the late reply. I just got home from work (at 7 in the morning, mind you) >_<
@~Ipoh Mali I don't really think I'm that knowledgeable on the matter. I've just been using it longer than most people here, so I tend to know some "shortcuts" other users might not. There's still a lot of stuff I don't know. (see my reply to farkinid below) @Zai You're worshiping the wrong person. Sign up to Debian or GRML mailing lists, or dig deep into the Debian, Arch or Gentoo support forums and you'll find real gurus, many of whom are more proficient the the actual devs that make their distro, in some cases. @Farki No, I'm never really okay, but doctors scare me. My point stands, though. There are lots of people here that are light-years ahead of me in the stuff that matters. You know, stuff that can actually "cari makan". You, for example, probably blow me away at anything networking related. FlameReaper is also an I.T guy (I think) with some level of proficiency. Then there are guys like Zeroglyph who is a legally certified guru. TRUNASUCI also, I assume. I'm just a hobbyist who likes stable home BSD servers and Linux-powered netbooks that boot fast.... and colorful terminals ... and funky scripts .... and bitmap fonts...... etc. That's all. Totally useless stuff. Now can someone please post a screenshot to get this thread back on track!! This post has been edited by G-17: Aug 28 2011, 10:52 AM |

Someone send me some rendang!! QUOTE(cocooh) Busy with playing PS3 I sold my PS3 and every other Sony product I had a few months ago. Decided to boycott Sony ever since they sent that guy who installed Linux on hos PS3 to prison. I'm kinda angry cos they decided to release Limbo on the PS3 after I sold it, though. It's the only game I wanted to play ever since I saw the Xbox 360 video review last year. T_T Was playing with an older Debian partition and OB on the netbook earlier today. Thought I'd post one last scrot of it before I wipe the partition, just for the sake of old-skool nostalgia. ![]() |

@Zai
GTK and OBT are custom. I never got round to releasing them. That partition has already been wiped, but I should have the themes stored on one of my external HDDs somewhere. Problem is, I forgot what I named them >_< Also, Final Fantasy is not a game. It's a 60 hour long CG B-movie full of sparkly hair (looks more like a shampoo commercial, tbh), with maybe 6 minutes of actual gameplay somewhere in between. >_> |
