AS the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 17 times in their history - 10 times in the last 11 seasons. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup twice, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

Hi alien, I uploaded the Scholes Centurion video (a compilation of all 100 goals he scored throughout his career in Man United).

If it's allowed, I thought why not share with other forummers by posting the link in the first few posts. The link is : http://rapidshare.com/files/367460321/PS_Cntrn1x0.rar =)

Edit (08 Nov 2010): Looks like the link is no longer working (thx to sinoffire for notifying) so I reuploaded the video to a new link:

Surprise! United's virus-hit stars fit for derby after all

Sir Alex Ferguson has been boosted by the recovery of most of his first-team stars from a virus ahead of tonight's Manchester derby.

Rio Ferdinand has been suffering from diarrhoea but will start against Manchester City, while Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Darren Fletcher, Dimitar Berbatov and Paul Scholes have all been given the all-clear.

Several United players, including Scholes, were sent home from training this week after a virus spread through the squad and staff, with Sir Alex Ferguson also laid low for a couple of days after contracting it.

But the core of Fergie's first-team has recovered in time for the City clash at Eastlands.

Nani has recovered from a groin injury he suffered in last week's 3-0 win away to Bursaspor, but Sir Alex Ferguson has yet to decide whether to start with the winger.

Manchester City expect Carlos Tevez to be fit after he suffered a minor injury in training yesterday.

Respect the guy. notworthy.gif Love him to bits especially when you can see tears in his eyes sometimes in that vid. The interviewer asked him about what SAF said to him or how did SAF motivate him when he's only name as a sub, and Solskjaer said that SAF explained to him the reasons why and whatnot for 45mins before a semi final, and it meant a lot to him. But that he missed a chance in that game(probably), and it still haunts him till today. Wonder which game that was?

We were lucky to have him. He had so much respect for SAF and people in general in the way he behave and react to things. He said a lot of stuff about SAF too that probably most people still don't know about. The way SAF treats people.. that's important especially with big egos all sitting together at the same table. It's going to be a mountain trying to replace SAF when the time comes. Hope we strike lucky again like we did years back with SAF. And like SAF first few steps, it won't be perfect.

#MUFC v #MCFC: VDS, Rafael, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra, Fletcher, Carrick, Scholes, Nani, Park, Berbatov

Giggs not involved.

#MCFC team v #MUFC: Hart; Boateng, K Toure, Kompany, Zabaleta; De Jong, Barry; Silva, Y Toure, Milner; Tevez.

glad to see nani starts.. we need him badly.. looks like they are going on 4-5-1 like what they did against chelsea... midfield battle is going to be tough.. hopefully carrick and scholes are in their form

and de jong! you better not show your kungfu skills mad.gif mad.gif

Loving the defence!! Strong play by the back four, especially vida and rafa. Keep it like this and I believe city won't be able to do much. As usual, keep it simple. Now just need to find that bits of brilliance from Maybe berba or nani for that goal(s).

though its a draw its clear who's the superior team. we take it to their place after 20 minutes onwards. Performance was good, except for putting the ball into the goal. If we play this way every game we will win every game with ease!

Not a favorable result but well, pretty much expected a draw anyway

I agree man, what bad timing. 2 full backs injured on the same day. I wouldve settled for a draw before the game but after watching it,we were much better but credit to both defences. We looked rock solid.

Thank god for fletch. He is really work hard to get the ball. Pity but not surprise that Nani performance is a bit poor since he is just return from injury. A bit wreck 2nd half smile.gif

city's main threat was Joe Hart.lol.. screw all the wuss in city particularly in first half, so scared to open up and attack..

man hernandez should have come on earlier.. he stretched city's back four well..

vidic, ferdinand, fletcher for me la this match... defended consistently well and fletcher never gave up chasing and tackling right until the end.

So much for a BIG team. Playing for a draw at home. MASSIVE! BIG my azz.

MOTM : Fletch, work his socks off. Closely followed by Vidic, Rio and Berba.

Team played very well. Very gutted not to get all 3 points especially that stunning display in 2nd half. Anyway, expected for a draw. Judas32 scared to fight with seniors and cari pasal with Rafael. laugh.gif On the bright side, Essien did a Balotelli. Red carded at the end. Good job Sheep. Keep em on coming.

Welcome back Micheal Carrick. If Evra and Rafael weren't niggling with injuries, we could have Obertan and Hernandez just now. Oh well, 4 points aren't a lot. We'll get them.

the difference between a real BIG club and a money BIG club. A real big club got the balls to push man forward. A real big club have 2 world class defender to defend and not concede while they have 5 to 6 man attacking. Money BIG club have 10 man in defense, 1 tevez running only. Sad to say, defending in numbers is stronger than attacking in numbers. Mancini should be ashame of himself having 350 million worth of player playing like a bottom table club

This weekend would be interesting. Bring it on Villa.

Everton vs Arsenal and Chelsea vs Sunderland. One of these will dropped 2 or 3 points.

to be honest i think Scholes doesnt perform that well as well. not poor, but just average. Nani and Park as well, but nani is understandable because he's just recovering..Berba meanwhile is awesome, as well as Rafael, and Vidic while the rest did their job well done.

Aiyoo guys stop it. It's embarassing doh.gif

Another thing that was embarassing? City. Showed absolutely no desire to win shocking.gif For a team full of multi-millionaires,where's the freaking desire? I'm proud of how we played. I thought Carrick and Fletch was exceptional, along with Vidic. Berbatov was poor, but we can't blame him,he really had no support, neither did Hernandez. And losing two fullbacks is just bad luck sweat.gif

But overall I'm pleased with a point, and a bit disappointed we didn't have the cutting edge to create chances. But considering the recent injuries and viruses,I can understand that. Heck,I bet most of them are still carrying the virus. Scholes clearly is,he was coughing badly at the end unsure.gif

I think I know the cause why we lost. We have no dribbler like bale. We need to sign him asap. Ask ferguson to look into his YouTube videos.

You cannot call city small club cos there is smaller club than them thus they need to be referred as the bigger team than forest or whatever.

Injuries updates on both fullbacks:

Rafael has a dead leg and will miss Villa Park. Evra has ankle injury and will only be assessed today(UK time).

Guess, it's going to be Brown and O'Shea/Fabio on Saturday then. We have an another midweek match against Gers right? I can see both of Rafael and Evra going to be rested for that match.

Carrick's contribution for the match ..

59 successful passes out of 61.
7 interceptions.
2 tackles won from 2 attempted.
1 clearance.
2 penalty box blocks.

All action.

Oh ... Scholes will miss Villa as well. He was yellow carded in the match.

Where got lah Keano replacement. Maybe, the closest we have is Fletcher. Then again, it's hard to replace Keano. Same for Becks, Ruud and Ronaldo.

But we will manage as we have done it through the years. Lets just wait for Carrick to get his full confidence and Ando to follow suit. They might just replicate their majestic performances against Roma(Carrick) and against both Fabregas and Gerrard(Ando).

bah... boring draw.

Mancini's City more like an italian team than an epl team. They set out to fustrate Man utd, and hoping that we want to desperate for a win and would press hard enough to leave ourselves open for counterattack. Good thing SAF didn't fall for that trap. But end result is quite a boring match.

Good to see boxy's carrick good form continue.

Nani looked a bit like the old Nani, not inventive and direct enough, poor vision/passing. But like others said, first game back from injury, so ok nevermind.

For me, Rafael looked really solid. If he can play at this level consistently, he'll make an excellent 1st choice fb.

yes i believe carrick's passing today was much much better than his other days.

they were with purpose and intent, also precise n crisp.

park was crap. duno why he was playing.
i felt that playing 4-4-2 with chicharito for park would be a more open game.

but if we put up to 4-4-2, that will lead to a city dominating possesion situation. With 3 defensive midfielders, they are definitely going to out muscle us if we have only 2 CM. Our CM was class enough to handle the situation though today.

To be fair, they have every right to do so.

The debt is currently easily sustainable. They won't expect to sell for anything short of over the odds for United.

i always thought he play behind rooney. With his fantastic footworks, he can easily go through a defenders and open up space for Rooney. But Rooney injured... so now he taking the main striker role. Like the target man

They were clearly playing for a draw. When we played well, quickly with possesiom, Toure got the ball and asked the teamates to slow down. Duh pretenders doh.gif

Btw Park didn't play well. We could have given Obertan a run if it wasn't for the injuries. Like I said Nani wasn't fit, he was not productive.

a good result for us.despite what other say about the teams performance, this at least keep s us in touch with the leaders.conmsidering were stil suffering from the flu, and injuries playing a 100% fit cit£h and getting a draw is an achievement it self.

and btw, is it safe to say "i told you so???".the jinx didnt work and we almost got the full wrath of it!!.

some funny moments tho with the argentinian terrier and rafael.i bet chirs foy was like

foy: "hey scholes what the hell they were on about"

scholes:"beats me, im english mate"

Why are u taking the jinx thing so seriously? If it's anything it's more of a jibe at sheep rather than the jinx itself..are u that superstitious? Besides IF the jinx is true how to determine it is working or not by just after 1 game? Takkan expect Chelsea players to blow up into pieces meh? laugh.gif

as for our players performances, i think its fair to them they did a good job.most of the are still lacking that fitness.fletcher, berbs are among them.the flu really did one against them and mean while nani isnt still 100% from the groin injury.

off to villa now, and what annoys me is they won in an action packed game!!the weekend they meet us the time they start scoring goals and and win matches.what an irony biggrin.gif

I seldom see a manager stands so long beside the touch line during a match. That's what manchini did, he basically stood there the entire match grumbling this grumbling that..... Niama deploy 3 DMs what did he expect? That his players can attack all out doh.gif

Maybe the owners told him if he loses this match then he will be sacked, that's why he was too nervous to even get his ass seated and playing such a no-balls tactic, at HOME whistling.gif

well its ok for them to play this type of tactics (after all it was what they did for years), but couple with the noise they made before the match, its very very anti-climatic tbh.... shakehead.gif shakehead.gif

10 Quick Observations From Derby Day
  • Fairly even first half but we bossed it in the second. City were there for the taking. They sat back and invited us to come at them. Our own careless passing prevented us from getting a goal as much as their defensive work.
  • First Gareth Bale, now Carlos Tevez and David Silva. The players who everyone rants and raves about are impressively neutralised by our defence. They make it look easy too.
  • Go on, Rafael! If ever there’s a way to endear yourself to the fans it’s squaring up to a despised opponent. Only 20-years-old and skinny as owt, Rafael stood his ground against that disgusting little troll thing.
  • Our full-backs are part of our great attacking threat, with Rafael and Patrice Evra up there as the best fullback combination in Europe. Disappointing to see both of them forced out of the game through injury. No disrespect to Wes or O’Shea, but you have to wonder what our first choice fullbacks could have added in those final 5 minutes.
  • Welcome back Michael Carrick! He was composed on the ball, confident and started to look like that player who helped bring the title back in 2007. Fabio Capello will have been wondering why he put that useless oaf Barry in his team this summer when comparing their performances this evening.
  • Nemanja Vidic is a brick wall. Every ball in the air was his, his timing for tackling was perfect, and I can’t remember a single occasion when a City player got the better of him. Rightly man of the match.
  • You have to wonder what Mancini has spent his money on. In the second half they only had one thing in mind: not losing. At home and in a derby, that is a disgrace. They parked the bus, showed no imagination up front and couldn’t give us a game. Remember the derby days of years gone by, with dross like Sinclair, Vassell and Jon f***in’ Macken scoring against us? Yeh, we’d go on and win the league or a trophy, but at least City fans could hold their head up high after derby day. Where can they get any pride from performances like that? Another source of embarrassment.
  • You have the admire the work rate of Darren Fletcher. With time running out, Toure and Tevez on two separate occasions threatened to break, but Fletch ran harder and nicked the ball off them. He hasn’t had his greatest season so far but you can’t underestimate the effect that extra effort he puts in adds to our team, and our results.
  • Blue tinted specs? Are you f***ing serious you small time knob eds?
  • If Ferguson wants to be a truthful man, he can’t say our main objective was to win the game if he is going to replace Dimitar Berbatov, who had played so well outside their box all game, with Javier Hernandez. Play the two together, go for the gamble, and win the game. We wanted to win tonight and certainly worked harder at it at City (not hard though is it?) but they were there for the taking tonight.

QUOTE(boxsystem @ Nov 11 2010, 03:30 PM)

We wanted to win tonight and certainly worked harder at it at City (not hard though is it?) but they were there for the taking tonight.

to be honest im not sure who's he is referring to, but personally i think he refers to that City dude, and that City dude himselves think so too.

when United players > City players in fitness, they never think it could be due to Mancini's more tiring training regime? But NOOOOOO, its MU players taking drugs, oh yeah thats more possible.

just read about Blackpoo thatl made 10 changes to their squad before facing Villa..Now if they were against ManUtd and did that surely will cause some media outburst against us and Holloway getting fined like Mick McCarthy back then..just because it was Villa then this case basically evaporated..just shows the double standards they have

Their manager threatened to quit the club if he/the club is fined over that. It's ridiculous. He should be able to do what he wants, especially if he thinks it's in the best interest of his club to do so, even if it means fielding a really weak side.

ooh, why are the pundits not talking about it. Only Manchester United case they make it big la. The media know of very well how much United is hated due to their glorious record, so they are stepping on to this retards ABUs to gain publicity to their news stand.

Every time I get in there I only hear sounds of crickets. There is almost no discussion happening. They only praise for their team & criticism for the others. They construct their judgement through rumours. Kind of sad of to see that in people.

yup, and fair play to them cause they could have drawn the match as well if not for Collins late winner..Just don't get what the FA/Premier Leauge is thinking sometimes..just because a lot of changes made doesn't mean they were throwing in the towel, and midweek matches are taking a toll on the footballers anyway, nothing wrong at all to rotate players..I blame the media as well because of the publicity they made..well tbf the media is part to blame for everything bad happening in English football nowadays laugh.gif

It's always like this. Whenever we claimed that we are being discriminated, it will fall on deaf ears.

If it weren't for dubious handball and that offside goal, 4th on a trot will be ours.

Wat

I hope you are trolling or you just don't heard the news about his injury

Anyway, Villa has always been a tough opponent for us. Hopefully we will beat them and maintain our unbeaten run

yes and no. it is more like a hybrid. It has the bigger ventilation holes on the side, like the player version (replica doesnt have this). However the washing tag inside is also in the form of labels like replica..for Player wear, it is printed. For example, THIS PICTURE is the jersey worn by Portugal players. Authentic Home Shirt will have those holes, but not the printed washing info as seen at the back of the picture. instead the washing label is the same as replica.

Valencia wasn't bought at a bargain price, it was around 15m, but can sumbat into starting 11 and make impact is true.

i'm guessing that the only problem Chelsea's having now is trying to gel the newcomers into the current squad. apparently Ramires isn't doing a good job at it, and so is Zhirkov?

i guess one of the reason is SAF has been doing it for decades, which means more and more links all over Europe and word to spot talented youngsters. Not to say other clubs doesnt, but the degree of links SAF and his assistants have over the years are massive.

Zhirkov has been doing pretty well recently. and Ancelotti has been trying to integrate Ramires into his team whenever possible.

oh i thought valencia was around 10m or so. yes, both ramires and zhirkov cost about 18m each. both needed quite some time to play well. zhirkov is playing well but it looks like ramires needs more time.

Ramires technically is very good. but i think he's too weak, too easy for opponents knock him down and steal ball from him. need to gain more muscle. similar to our Park, opponents shove him a bit and he'll lose the ball. no foul given. though, too early to judge Ramires, but hopefully he'll be their Kleberson.

Ferreira IMO as good as our Oshea, as fullback. technically Ferreira is better, but Oshea are better defender. they will not be spectacular, but good back up players to have.

dunno about Park.he certainly got great ball control(just behind Roo and Carrick).besides he can dispossess ball from opponent without tackling

if he losses the ball he'll win a free kick

before he was just a good workhorse (no offense, its a compliment) but over his time here u can see he improve from ball control, crosses etc...

er....nop...'twas his brilliant performance for PSV and of cos his tireless effort on pitch that prompted saf to get him over from PSV. he's ball control + crosses are already there when he was in PSV. hence the nick "3-Lung-Park" by stretford end.

I don't think he "improved" per se. I always think he is good, I mean he's the one pulling all strings for PSV before, the main man. So he is comfortable with the reaponsibility. However, when he come to MU at the beginning, the "leader" role is assumed by others and thus he happily take the role of supporting player, or back up. But after a few seasons, SAF have more trust in him to give him in a more commanding role, as u can see how he often scores against the big teams. The biggest evident is against Wolves when the usual "leaders" are injured or not performing, he stepped up and won us the game with his goals.

He plays with more confidence now, that's all I'm saying. More confident to shoot, to dribble..few seasons ago he just do normal passing, probably scared to mess it up.

Well, what can you do if you are spoilt with choices? We had Rooney-Ronaldo, then Rooney-Ronaldo-Tevez and Rooney-Ronaldo-Tevez-Berba. Now we're having Nani to step up and play consistently.

Park has been brilliant even in his PSV days. When you come to a bigger club, of course you won't be playing the 'STAR' card anymore. Plus, there are more talents than what they had for PSV. It's no surprise, really.

It's his humility that I respect as well. From a star he is willing to be the supporting actor in the club, not something you see everyday. Probably something to do with his Asian upbringing, especially those Koreans/Japanese. Rarely get over their head and always wanna improve.

But good thing that we can still rely on his leadership in attack when needed to.

Ronaldo: Ferguson is best in the world

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson - branding him the best manager in the world.

The Manchester United manager spotted his talent and signed him from Sporting Lisbon back in 2003.

And there was no turning back.

Ronaldo collected three Premier League titles as well as a Champions League winner's medal during his six-year stint at Old Trafford.

Under the tutelage of Ferguson, Ronaldo developed into one of the best players in the world - leading him to win the FIFA World Player of the Year in 2008.

A year later, he signed for Madrid on a world record fee of £80 million.

Speaking in an interview with publication Metro, the 25-year-old was probed to make a comparison between Ferguson and current manager Jose Mourinho and he was quick to give his former mentor the best possible accolade.

"In some ways, they are alike - they both have plenty of experience and have won all there is to win in football," Ronaldo said.

"The only difference that comes to my mind is that one is older than the other. I loved working with Sir Alex. We got on really well and today he is my friend. From where I am concerned, Sir Alex Ferguson is the best coach in the world."

The Madrid winger also spoke about his slow start to the season, where he failed to find the net for the first four games before going on to score 13 goals in 16 matches in all competition.

"My task has not changed. I work, I stay calm, and I let things come to me. It is true that I had to wait some matches to score goals, but from that moment everything has changed.

"This is proof that football is unpredictable. That is the situation I am experiencing now and I am happy for it. I hope it will continue like this."

Ronaldo went on to hail the effect of Mourinho at the Santiago Bernabeu and the players he brought into the club - particularly Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira.

"There is more discipline. Mourinho has adjusted the way that we play. He is a fantastic coach, and the titles he has won prove his value.

"[Ozil and Khedira] are both excellent players. They continue to surprise me, like they did at the World Cup. I love playing with them."

In conclusion, he was coy when quizzed on who he thinks will win the Ballon d'Or title.

"That it a hard question. We will see what FIFA decides this year."

that whats special bout park with united.. on regular basis he only run here and there, pass the ball. then suddenly he can surprise the oppenent with dribble and shoot on goal. type of player that can make a different.. also can defence when needed. that why he's been feature most on united big games.
read somewhere hiddink said when he want to leave PSV hiddink try to persuade him to stay for another season then he will try get park a deal with chelsea

Someone mentioned here after the derby math that he's not impress with park's performance. Can't remember who was it but I was one who were really impressed with park's performance that day... Chase the ball tirelessly for the team, always making himself available during attack..

Notice that he always create space for himself to receive passes from carrick and scholes, eventhough he can't do much with the ball but it's not his fault, city's defence was just too packed for him to pick out any good passes or do any dribbles.

Overall his contribution was just impressive, at least to me rclxms.gif

Schmeichel tips Reina for Utd

QUOTE
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel is keen to see Liverpool No.1 Jose Reina make the move to Old Trafford.

Schmeichel was a key figure in United's dominance of English football during the 1990s and the club initially struggled to replace the imposing Dane upon his departure in 1999.

A string of keepers came and went before the Red Devils settled on Edwin van der Sar, who has been a consistent presence between the posts since joining from Fulham in 2005.

However, Van der Sar has been tipped to retire at the end of the season after recently turning 40 and speculation is mounting as to who will be his successor.

Liverpool keeper Reina has recently been linked with a move to his current club's arch-rivals and there have been rumours that the Spaniard wants to leave Anfield.

Schmeichel believes United need to bring in someone of Reina's ability to replace Van der Sar and would not be surprised to see his old club bid for the 28-year-old.

Fits the bill

"I'm pretty sure they would go for someone like Reina, I'm pretty sure that's what they are trying to do," Schmeichel told Beyond The Pitch.

"You can look at talent, you can look at young, good players, you don't want that, you want someone that can go in straight away and give performances in 80 per cent of the games that the No.1 choice goalkeeper will play for Manchester United.

"Too many goalkeepers have been through in and out of the doors at Manchester United and I think now the general perception is, for this team to play well and win trophies, that position has to be someone who is of the very, very highest quality, but also with the right experience and that's why I think someone like Reina would fit the bill.

"The rumours are very, very strong around Old Trafford with this. A lot of goalkeepers are mentioned, but Reina seems to be the one that fits in the team and if he ever was to leave Liverpool, which again there is a big, big rumour he will, Manchester United would be a great club for him to come to.

"I hope that someone like Pepe Reina will go to United when Edwin calls it a day and I hear rumours that he is going to leave Liverpool so for him to go to Man Utd would be very, very good for us."

Rafael plays down Tevez row

QUOTE
Manchester United full-back Rafael claims he has no problem with Carlos Tevez following their on-pitch bust-up on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old Brazilian squared up to Tevez during the Manchester derby at Eastlands in midweek, as City and United played out a dour 0-0 draw.

It was a rare talking point in a poor Premier League affair as, after a heated exchange, the pair were separated by referee Chris Foy.

Rafael insists that he has no problem with former Red Devil Tevez, and says it was merely a normal confrontation between a Brazilian and an Argentinian.

"This was normal. The rivalry is always fierce in a derby and if a Brazilian is against an Argentinian, even more so," he said in The Sun.

"I do not have a problem with Tevez. It's up to every footballer to defend his club 100 per cent.

"I am unhappy with the scoreline as we needed to win to leave City behind but I'm very content with my own performance."

United have the chance to get back to winning ways when they take on Aston Villa in the early kick-off on Saturday.

at the peril of being blasted by kopite for my opinion...

i think getting reina as a GK is almost as good as getting gomes as a GK

i personally prefers GK in the mold of VDS(tall, long arms, silent command, stay at his penalty spot).i don't want Attacking GK

so far i see both Hart or De Gea fit as VDS successor

Dunno if im slowpoke onot, but Man Utd gonna wear Poppies against Villa at Villa Park. Considering its away game, it means the poppy is gonna be on the white shirt though, so the pic in Daily Mail link is not accurate.

park already posses the such skills some of the members posed here.thats among the reasons we bought him in the first place.he may lack that creativty or flair compared to south Americans nor Europeans but he makes that up with the work rate, the good judgments and simplicity wch sees us really go forward.under sir alex i think he just learned more a nd developed what he already have in him to the next stage.

no team report today tho,its all tomorrow.

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed Frank Lampard faces another two to three weeks on the sidelines.
Lampard, 32, has already spent two months on the sidelines this season after undergoing hernia surgery, and he suffered an abductor muscle injury during training on Thursday.

Alex also misses out on Sunday's game against Sunderland, but Ancelotti will be able to welcome Nicolas Anelka back into the side after he recovered from a back problem.

Here's to Neuer muppets who hope he replaces VDS:

QUOTE
Schalke coach admits Neuer and others may go

Schalke coach Felix Magath claims that the club may struggle to hang on to goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and others, as they struggle both on and off the pitch.

Neuer, a German international, will see his Schalke contract expire in 2012 and, as the Bundesliga side are suffering financial difficulties off the pitch, may be sold in order to bring in more revenue.

The goalkeeper has been lined up as a potential replacement for 40-year-old Edwin Van der Sar at Manchester United, while Arsenal and Bayern Munich are also believed to be monitoring his situation.

Schalke's awful start to this season has seen them take just nine points from their 11 games, and Magath admits it may be tough to persuade some of the club's stars to stay.

Speaking to German daily Bild, Magath said: "Of course I do not trust entirely that I will be able to keep Manuel Neuer and all the other players.

"Although the situation is somewhat more difficult with less revenue, we have created the conditions to become champions in years to come."

I certainly don't pray for his arrival tongue.gif

Not that I don't like him, but haven't watch him long enough to know what he can do. Same with all others goalie, like de gea etc. Let SAF and Eric Steele to sort it out biggrin.gif

cant expect him to say

My Rooney's fantasy 11 is

Van der sar, Gary neville, vidic, ferdinand, evra, nani, fletcher, scholes, carrick, giggs, rooney

right? LOL

Nevertheless that was a very strong team by individual performances. our clubs are more of teamwork i guess, very hard to blend mix with other team

Rooney ready to fly home

QUOTE
Wayne Rooney is to return to Manchester over the weekend after making giant strides in his recovery from an ankle injury.

The striker has made just one appearance as a substitute since the end of September due to the problem and was sent to America for rehabilitation and conditioning work earlier this month.

He is set to fly back to England on Saturday before being assessed by Manchester United's medical team on Monday.

Rooney therefore has no chance of being selected for England's friendly with France next week, although it may not be too much longer before Sir Alex Ferguson has him available again.

Improved

Assistant manager Mike Phelan has been encouraged by the reports United have received about the 25-year-old and hopes he will be ready for action soon.

"Wayne has been doing really well," Phelan told Key 103. "He has been training really hard, working morning and afternoon.

"Our people out there who are looking after him have been really pleased with his attitude and approach.

"All being well he can have a nice easy flight back.

"We will see where he is at on Monday but we think he will have improved immensely."

Fletcher wants no more draws

QUOTE
Darren Fletcher insists it is crucial Manchester United do not add to the run of draws that has hindered their progress this season.

Despite boasting a 25-match unbeaten streak which stretches back to last season's title-losing reverse against Chelsea, the Red Devils have been unable to win half their games in the Premier League this term.

Their sixth draw of the campaign came in Wednesday's dour goalless Manchester derby, a result which allowed leaders Chelsea to re-establish a four-point advantage at the top of the table, and midfielder Fletcher is adamant United need more than a point from their trip to Aston Villa on Saturday to stay in the title race.

Left behind

"People are talking about us not losing but we have drawn too many, especially away from home," said Fletcher.

"We have to start winning our away games if we want to push up this league.

"You can't afford to draw too many games, otherwise you will get left behind.

"Overall, you would be better winning two games out of three and losing the other one rather than winning one and drawing two.

"That is why we were disappointed on Wednesday.

"We could have got the win and felt we produced a performance good enough to get us one."

United have not lost at Villa Park since the opening day of the 1995-96 campaign, but Scotland captain Fletcher knows his side cannot afford to be complacent.

"It is a really good ground to play at," he said. "It is a fantastic setting that has a good feel to it.

"The pitch is always good and every match seems like a big occasion.

"You can't explain why you have a good record at some grounds but not others but the important thing is not to take it for granted.

"We can't just expect to win because it is Villa Park."

Fletcher has already racked up 16 appearances for the Red Devils this term, 15 of them coming as a member of Sir Alex Ferguson's starting line-up, but the 26-year-old insists he has no complaints over his taxing start to the campaign.

Coping

"I am coping fine and loving every minute," he added.

"I feel good and my energy levels are good. Because my pre-season was uninterrupted, my fitness is high, so I have not had a problem at all.

"You have to make a conscious effort to be sure your body is ready for each game, but that is easier purely due to the medical facilities we have at the training ground.

"Everyone loves playing and you are certainly not going to hear any complaints from me about too many matches."

Reds optimistic for Evra

QUOTE
One of United's main casualties from the midweek derby is in contention to face Aston Villa this weekend.

Patrice Evra limped off the pitch at Eastlands due to an ankle injury but he has since trained with the squad and the Reds are hopeful the left-back will start the Saturday lunch-time match at Villa Park.

Assistant manager Mike Phelan said on Friday afternoon, "Pat has been out there [on the training pitch] today so we’re quite optimistic that he will make it."

However, Evra's opposite full-back - Rafael - seems less likely to face Gerard Houllier's side following his withdrawal from Wednesday night's match. With Gary Neville ruled out, there could be a start for Wes Brown at right-back.

"Rafael is still suffering from a dead leg," reported Phelan. "We’re going to see how that develops over the next 24 hours."

Paul Scholes is suspended after collecting his fifth yellow card of the season at Eastlands, and Wayne Rooney will again be absent as he travels back from a training week in the US.

"Wayne's been doing really well," said Phelan. "He has been training hard, working morning and afternoon. Our people who are looking after him put there have been really pleased with his attitude and his approach to everything. All being well he will have a nice easy flight back and we’ll see where he’s at when he comes in [to Carrington] on Monday.

"We think he will have improved immensely."

Awesome tonight early kickoff, biggrin.gif

Always prefer our match to be on Saturday instead of Sunday

So my prediction for tonight

VDS
Brown - Vida - Rio - Evra
Nani - Carrick - Fletch - Park
Berba - Hernandez

Oh so predictable biggrin.gif

there's nothing wrong in what he said. maybe he is a bit big headed sometimes who knows. no doubt he is a decent player. but just like mancini said, must be down to earth and humble. look at messi, top player but still so humble.

to me/in my opinion/imho... you cant be going out slaying your club players like that, that would just demoralize them more...

Giggs should be available for today match... probably come in as a sub.
Scholes will be missed but if we're playing 442, Carrick and Fletcher will get the job done.
Brown and Oshea must step up and cover our back flanks... hoping for a win tonight flex.gif
