DOF in photography applies to video. because light still works the same way.

Guys, have abit of dilemma here ~.~

Should I go for 550d + L lens or 5d mark ii + normal lens? I am sure my path is no more than just a hobby... might aswell get the best combo..

and yes this is for a long term period... been thinking high and low then again. I want to know what people think too...
photography is often about preference.

we could share 101 things but in the end it's still you.

you're in a dilemma because you know some stuff but know not enough, or know enough of the things but neither paths are convincing enough for your or both paths being equally convincing.

my take is that you should just wait.

you're talking about 550D + L vs 5D2 + non-L, sounds like you have a budget constraint.

in fact you talk like you only have 1 path and forever you're stuck. biggrin.gif

i look at it, either way you go you're bound to upgrade something later.

I'd say go for the 550D + L lens. 550D is a capable camera and im sure is great with an L lens. You'll know if or when you want to upgrade the body when you have more experience and understand more about DSLR. As far as I know, it doesnt really matter if you have a 1D mrkIV or a 1000D if you pair it with a useless lens. Watch this video on youtube, they discuss this dilemma http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk5IMmEDWH4
IMO their example isn't exactly a good one.

he's using a brand-new tip-top condition 550D with L lens

against a high grade body with a used lens with unknown condition, a pretty old one too. Not that L lenses aren't not old but they're built to last.

if he used a new but cheaper EF lens the outcome would be much different for the higher grade body.

the noise control difference would be so little that it doesn't matter.

you guys worry about the most petty of things.

Comradez, i think your expectation on noise could probably be at inhuman level. what exactly are you using those images for?

iso 800 can take nice clearly sharp images what.

QUOTE(ComradeZ @ Nov 26 2010, 04:26 PM)
thats the problem... when using noise reduction can still see the noise on 27" samsung... even resize can still see it. Or is it true what goldie said about me? I mean the part that I'm like a machine who can see the pixel but nobody else does?
*
biggrin.gif

i've sent my photos for prints, for.......

a) clients to use on brochures, menu, wall posters, glass windows (which the clients are happy)
b) qualification application (which the judges are pleased)
c) competition (which i won)
d) other requests, usually 4R (which the people requesting it were pleased)
e) newspaper (it came out newspaper la hehe.)

sources vary from 6MP to 18MP, print sizes vary 4R to 4ft x 9ft, from ISO100 to ISO1600, and printing cost varying from RM 0.03 per square inch to RM 0.15 per square inch. smile.gif

the requirement varies, so what is your requirement that you need to pixel peep so hard until you're not satisfied and all?

somehow i only face NOISE related discussion (along with sharpness, and wb matters) with the newbies.

talk with the experts in the industry - where got talk about those things wan? (Redcross can verify). people talk about how to get the shot, and how to do it right! ....... among many other things.

I mean if you can print some stuff, I can do the same. Thanks for the answers guys.
noise visibility depends on your photo.

if you're concerned about the noise and such, spend some money to do test prints.

QUOTE(Grajindo @ Nov 26 2010, 06:55 PM)
i am having problem wiht my battery grip. i sent to canon malaysia but then still have the same problem, which is the shutter button. sometimes i cannot focus, sometimes can. even it can focus, it won't take any photo even i fully pressed it. but the other things are just working fine, the wheel and the fe lock buttons. so would like to ask, by any chance that there is problem with my body rather than my grip? so tired to send to canon malaysia dy. sent my things on 4th nov but they only get it done by today, but still having the same problem
yeah common problem IMO.

QUOTE(Hwoarang45 @ Nov 26 2010, 07:13 PM)
550d kakis, does using a manual non TTL flash on 550d, the shutter stuck only at 1/200? i cant seem to increase it, i wonder is it my old vivitar flash problem ? i recall i use lx3 time with the flash i can see it faster...
have you set it in the custom function?

question is, why do you need it to be faster?

QUOTE(-kytz- @ Nov 27 2010, 02:59 AM)
Guys, can we have like have a Post Processing thread? Anyone willing to open one? tongue.gif

Noobs like me would definitely love to have one! Imagine sharing all the tips&tricks on how to produce magnificent HDR,B&W,Retro&Vintage feel,al naturale portraiture, landscape, macro  thumbup.gif And not to mention, can share the ALL important presets! drool.gif
why need to post process so much?

in fact i find learning what to dodge, what to burn, what to clone, and how to do it is more important in PPing than whatever you've mentioned.

take note of the courses / workshops i mentioned in the pinned thread, i donno how many of you even bother to follow it but many are where you can actually meet award winning pros / experts in the industry and see their photos, and how they PPed. there's a huge difference between GOOD and BAD PP.

steelseries ikari laser mouse! biggrin.gif

that said, PP is entirely individual. yours looks fine, pretty much the usual S curve adjustment.

there's more to PPing that changing of colors.

Just went to a wedding and suddenly become the OP .... I refused... but they keep on asking... not prepared... the result freaks me out... and I'm having a fever on being OP  rclxub.gif so seeing stars and dont know...
just pray the outcome are not like crap  sweat.gif cute couple and nice family indeed  thumbup.gif the hospitality is top notch... but then again... afraid to see the pictures gonna be on the big screen  cry.gif

p.s: I followed goldfries of "not to be uncle bob".... then got trapped... because intentionally want to just capture the atmosphere... and friends having fun...
haha. as what my "sifu" would tell me - photography is a show-business! tongue.gif

pic spam, Kenny roger's Caesar salad,  blush.gif

50m f2.5 , i feel maybe too much bokeh should have use 2.8 or more right? sifu goldfries any tips?
i doubt 2.5 to 2.8 going to make much difference. even 4.0 sometimes not enough.

no other angle, like say higher up?

good try though, enough as a food blog photo.

again pictures of my dinner vs pictures for cookbook / magazine is different oh.

QUOTE(ukiya21 @ Nov 27 2010, 08:45 PM)
Just my dua kupang... If you intend to take food i think you DOF should cover everything.... ur DOF is not enough i think...
DOF doesn't have to cover everything but it has to cover most part the subject. smile.gif

But I'm just a newbie... no idea at all.. the best is ask from the pro --> Goldfries
thanks, even I'm learning as well. blush.gif

http://www.twitpic.com/31sijv <=--- these are the photos i sent for my MPA panel judging. (i think the only one in M'sia to do commercial, some more using food)

before this session i had a quick review of my best 20++ food photos by a few experts (Jim Liaw and Patrick Low) - they just gave feedback on each photo but generally my best from 2007 to 2010 - i had probably only less than 10 that were decent enough to use, then considering the duplicate setup / dishes, the total count went down to only 5.

the rest were like jokes la. I mean really, when they gave their feedback then only i realize how crappy is my work. fine for food blog, can make people hungry but by industry standards ahhh, haiyohh not enough! some pictures look alright but for print (about 12x8 size) it they just don't cut it.

after that back to the drawing board. spent some money planned a few shots. took additional shots during event, which i was lucky to nabbed many nice photos. Finally have my 20 presented photos, only 4 were from my database from 2007 to 2010. the other 16 were NEW as in created within the month.

summary : what i thought was good, and what other thought was great - got hit, and hit pretty hard though not harsh.

next time if got photo review sessions, I'll inform and see if you guys can attend. quite fun wan la actually. let the experts critique your work. once you see the light, you can improve your photos and it's a really rewarding experience.

Edited pic of ahmike89. just started learning pping pic.
that pic could look better with some burn (as in dodge / burn) on the face area, it's rather dark.
