Video review of the GS70:

http://youtu.be/QaLbVTs2B5k

Only bad thing about the GS70 (other than the built in battery) is the fact that NOTHING seems user upgradable/moddable. The guy in the video above says that opening the chassis can result in twisting the entire thing apart.

A small price to pay for the slimness, of course. But for tinkerers like me, I'll go nuts not being able to adjust anything in the laptop lol.

Hopefully, however, this will entice A LOT of newcomers to the MSI camp. Looks like a great mix of size, mobility and performance indeed.

Now they just need to get some good designers in to know how to make a respectable logo... LOL

That would be a good machine for photographers. Just that the lit up "gaming" logo doesn't look professional. Maybe an option for an interchangeable logo? Haha... even the GE40's Dragon Eye I would prefer without.

2 years warranty local set.

Sadly, adding mSATA will void the warranty cause there is a sticker under then body. But my seller say he will gao dim la.

But really sad lo on a big brand high performance lappy u just can't do anything.. I bought 1 Asus, 1 HP and 2 Dell and all of them are very user friendly for DIY, none of them got warranty sticker blocking ur way

Actually for RAM upgrades especially tearing the sticker won't matter - as stated by the MSI Careline and various MSI reps I've contacted. If they see the sticker torn, the service personnel will FIRST look if the RAM have been upgraded - in which case service proceeds as usual.

Somebody else contacted them through email and it seems upgrading mSATA/HDD is treated the same way. AS LONG AS NOTHING ELSE INSIDE THE LAPTOP IS DISTURBED IN ANY WAY.

Though for the GS70 not sure if anything can be done RAM related, considering all the RAM is soldered on the motherboard.

BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, like I said before, DO check with the CARELINE (ask them to get the people IN CHARGE of the laptop department FIRST!) before proceeding with any SELF MODDING.

Questions:

1) If you look at MSI's current brochure (page 15), you'll note that it says the GE40 has optional Super Raid 0. I know that there has been talk that our local version of the GE40-20C doesn't have the mSATA daughterboard, but I'm wondering if the current refresh has it built in now.

2) If you look on page 14 of the same brochure, it says the GE60 also has optional Super Raid 0. Does the GE60 have mSATA support out of the box?

3) The current brochure doesn't have any info on the GS70. Any idea what the local version's specs and prices are like?

4) In theory, is it possible to swap out the i7-4700 on any of these models with an i7-4800?

1) Looking at the specs, both MY version and the current refresh (assuming the info about the changes in the new refresh is NOT just a typo) of the GE40 comes with the Optical Disk Drive. This means that they BOTH do not come with the optional mSATA daughterboard. I have heard info that you can order both the daughterboard AND the ODD SATA HDD caddy from MSI Malaysia, but I haven't had time to check. There are also info floating online that GENERIC SATA to mSATA adapters and SATA HDD caddies CAN be used though, but it seems nobody have tried yet.

2) IINM, the GE60 mSATA slots are on the motherboard, so yes. I can be wrong though.

3) You can check in garage sales for the specs and prices. They all SHOULD be official Malaysian models (I haven't seen MSI AP sets yet, except for a certain somebody who imported his own GE40 in for the mSATA).

4) In theory, YES. It should be possible because ALL OF the MQ chips comes in sockets and are interchangeable. The HQ processors (4700HQ on the GS70 for instance) however are SOLDERED on the motherboard and ARE NOT interchangeable.

BUT, you must keep in minds the ability of certain models to cope with the heat produced by the before mentioned processors. For example, putting a 4900MQ in my GE40 will FOR SURE overwhelm the meager cooling system.

As for CPU BIOS support, MSI has never locked anything in the past and I don't think they will start now. IINM anyway.

For warranty? Keep your old processor and put it back lar lol.

SteelSeries keyboard with multicolour LED... nope.

Awesome MSI gaming Mouse... nope.

Dynaudio... nope.

I no point getting MSI. I saddings nao... cry.gif

But really, the MSI guys at Lowyat are really unmotivated. At least the Kelana Square guys a bit better - they get the work done even if it takes some time.

LOL.

Anyhow, how are you enjoying your GT70 so far? Not taking into account the stressed out MSI guy in Lowyat experience of course. I went there at the Lowyat MSI Service Centre too when I bought my GE40 and asked a few questions... so I know what you mean.

I called MSI"s product info hotline and they told me we can indeed get.the GE40 mSATA daughterboard (just the daughterboard) at the MSI service centres for about RM 500. The daughterboard is installed into an ODD bay caddy and can be done while you wait. However, MSI's sales personnel also told me that they are currently out of stock locally, and they need 2-3 days to bring the part in upon order.

QUOTE

I did, bur I found conflicting information. Some listings say the CPU is an i7-4700MQ, and some say it's an i7-4700HQ. Since I'm interested in vt-d, I'd like to know if the processor is supposed to be the vt-dless MQ or the vt-d equipped HQ.

QUOTE

Yeah.... I'm insane, but not that insane. You're right about the TDP of the 4702 being much lower than the 4700 and 4800 chips, though. I do have some worries if the GE40 wpuld be able to handle the addiional heat.
