For those who had unlocked their 6950 and set their clock speed and memory speed to 6970, is there any who face problem? Or has anyone successfully unlocked it without any problems?
Also, anyone tried mod the bios only to unlock the shaders? If so, how's the performance compared to unmod?

Take note, newer Radeon HD6800 and Radeon HD6900 series can't be really flashed anymore. AMD have changed the PCB and BIOS design for newer batch of Radeon HD6800 and HD6900.

Still, there's chance they're still able to flash successfully. But, it's not as safe as the older batch anymore.

It is okay to try as it comes with dual BIOS with one BIOS for recovery

So far so good, 6950 flash to 6970, i have increase the power tune to +20% as well give a bit of boost in world in conflict (old game)

but i'm having problem with eyefinity setting up though, it seems the passive mini display port to dvi adapter i have may be not working.

@LExus65 Because currently in techpowerup forums, there are quite a few people discouraging modding 6950 to 6970 and claim it will permanently damaged the card. So, I want to know if any of us here actually damaged their card after modding. I myself have modded and tried for awhile before changing it back to its original bios while waiting for more information to come by.

Guys just a question a 6970 > 5870 by 30% only right, in term of "cooler" it is still the same temperature 70-80C when it is running peak. Energy saving? 5870 use 180W and 6970 use 250W O.o

Searingmage, I believe it may be power delivery issue, so it have good chances of not able to deliver the performance a 6970 can give, but permanently damage the card is slim as you do not always push the card at maximum limit all the time.

Well, they were saying stuffs like the 2 extra pin for grounding is important and without it, will damaged the card. Also, the memory clock are tested at 1250, not 1375 for 6950, by OC-ing it to 1375, it may damage the memory (from what people in the forum say).
Lastly, usually when they lock the card, they won't test the extra shades and the part they lock, hence it may actually be defective or a defective 6970 converted to a 6950.

Should be around there. My 6950 is roughly 4.1k, when convert to 6970 is around 4.3k. (but I reverted it back to 6950 until it is confirmed that it won't bring any dmg by flashing bios to 6970 bios.)

PhysX still can be processed by Processor but it's not recommended only.

Games without PhysX title can't use PhysX also. Most of the games out there do not have PhysX title, so, they can't use PhysX offered by Nvidia.

Most games used OPEN SOURCE PHYSICS CALCULATION ENGINE, this mean they'll use whatever hardware(can be both GPU and CPU or either 1) you got to render or calculate the physics of the games/software.
Example:
Bullet Physics and Havok Physics.

So, you can stop your "don't think things didn't work out quite well". That's just your own imagination.

Physics Calculation of a game or software is merely CODING.
It's depending on the manufacturer on what they're into.
Take an example:
PhysX supported(and enabled) games are CODED NOT to perform greatly when you don't have PhysX(Nvidia GPU).
It's a marketing strategic offered by Nvidia basically.

3DMark, a well known benchmarking tools company used to support and partnered with PhysX.
However, now, they had dropped it. Because it's kind of cheating and unfair(get too much score making the benchmark unstable to be judged). It's like you need to make your software(physics calculation) just can run great in Nvidia GPU and run shitty on other hardwares(Intel, AMD).
3DMark 11 officially support Bullet Physics Engine(Open Source) already.

So meaning to say that titles with PhysX (Arkham Asylum, Mass Effect 2, Mafia 2, etc.) will work on AMD cards without problem... Cool!

Maybe I'll grab a HD6850 then. How about DX11 Tessellation?

These games can still be played nicely on AMD GPUs.
Maybe, without PhysX or you can set the PhysX to be rendered on CPU(it should be auto set to CPU since you're on AMD GPU).

DX11 Tessellation? Around all same basically, except Radeon HD5000-Series have very poor DX11 performance.

To begin with, titles with PhysX is workable with AMD cards. What is missing is only d eye candy offer by Physx itself. To me, no biggie as it does not affect my gaming much biggrin.gif
To date, not much games utilize DX11, but im sure more is coming on d way.

Thanx a bunch guys. I'm going to grab an XFX HD6850.

Btw I have an ASUS 650W PSU. Would that be enough if go Crossfire with HD6850 (2-way) in the future?
