For those who had unlocked their 6950 and set their clock speed and memory speed to 6970, is there any who face problem? Or has anyone successfully unlocked it without any problems?
Also, anyone tried mod the bios only to unlock the shaders? If so, how's the performance compared to unmod?

@LExus65 Because currently in techpowerup forums, there are quite a few people discouraging modding 6950 to 6970 and claim it will permanently damaged the card. So, I want to know if any of us here actually damaged their card after modding. I myself have modded and tried for awhile before changing it back to its original bios while waiting for more information to come by.

Searingmage, I believe it may be power delivery issue, so it have good chances of not able to deliver the performance a 6970 can give, but permanently damage the card is slim as you do not always push the card at maximum limit all the time.

Well, they were saying stuffs like the 2 extra pin for grounding is important and without it, will damaged the card. Also, the memory clock are tested at 1250, not 1375 for 6950, by OC-ing it to 1375, it may damage the memory (from what people in the forum say).
Lastly, usually when they lock the card, they won't test the extra shades and the part they lock, hence it may actually be defective or a defective 6970 converted to a 6950.

is this the supposed range of score i should get?

Should be around there. My 6950 is roughly 4.1k, when convert to 6970 is around 4.3k. (but I reverted it back to 6950 until it is confirmed that it won't bring any dmg by flashing bios to 6970 bios.)

Hi guys just wondering, i 'm having a XFX 6870..when i just do normal stuff like surfing the net the temperature is around 41c but when i start watching YouTube the temperature when up to 53c... is this normal? but when watch downloaded video it maintain at 41c. btw i'm using 10.10e CCC. Thanks in advance

I also notice that watching anime etc will increase the load of the gpu and hence increase in temperature on my 6950. I think that should be pretty normal, since videos are also a form of graphic.

would like to ask about my OCed HD6850 TOXIC temperature. It hit 86 Celcius when i run furmark stability test for 1 hour. Is that ok for the GPU to stay like that for a long run? or should i lower the temp? im afraid of damaging the GPU unsure.gif

Driver: 10.12
Fan speed: Auto/43%
Core clock: 950
Memory clock: 1180
GPU voltage: 1200

It's perfectly safe. AMD's gpu can run at a max safe temp of 104 celcius. So, running at 86celcius whole day will not damage your gpu. And also, most of the time, your gpu will be idle, which has a much lower temp, so, don't worry bout temp. Of course, if its idle is 86, PLS underclock it back. the life span of the gpu will significantly decrease. Lol..
