What would you suggest for a close up? what is your MFD of the 20mm?something like this? this was at 17mm APS-C la..with 20mm can do more creative things This post has been edited by zstan: Nov 4 2010, 10:15 AM |

QUOTE(8tvt @ Nov 4 2010, 10:07 AM) Yes. All these shots are done using my 20mm. Distortion is most pronounced when you are pointing a UWA lens up or down towards a subject. If you keep your lens level, then distortion can be kept to a minimal.QUOTE(wha7ever @ Nov 4 2010, 10:16 AM) Thanks!zstan : For a shot like that to work, you will need some dramatic clouds. As you can see in my shots, there are hardly any clouds on the day I shot. Also I feel that taking too many of these looking up shots they will start to look the same. It's a good suggestion but I guess I'm just not too much of a fan of this type of shots. If you noticed, in your pic, the building is side lighted. This gives some interesting shadows to the pic. If you look at my pics, the sun hits most of the buildings head on in one row while the other is in full shade. Won't get much interesting effect on those. I don't know the exact MFD of the 20mm but I can get within a few inches (3 to 5 inches IINM) to a subject. This post has been edited by shootkk: Nov 4 2010, 10:40 AM |

I would like to ask your personal experience in usage of filters like skyline, UVA/B, etc, etc. Forget about special effect filters like ND, Grey, polarizing, diffuser, etc, etc.
My question is ... a. Apart from protecting the lens, UV cut, what else it can do? b. Is there any significant diff between "cheap" & "expensive" filter? (other than the price lah... c. Why some pros decided to do away with such filter... (I don't want to ask them, ask u guys better...hahaha) d. Some says using flash without filter is better to avoid flare....true ah? Thanks in advance.... This post has been edited by joejoe2004: Nov 4 2010, 11:48 AM |

Why some pros decided to do away with such filter... (I don't want to ask them, ask u guys better...hahaha) they want 100% light transmission? |

Apart from protecting the lens, UV cut, what else it can do? b. Is there any significant diff between "cheap" & "expensive" filter? (other than the price lah... c. Why some pros decided to do away with such filter... (I don't want to ask them, ask u guys better...hahaha) d. Some says using flash without filter is better to avoid flare....true ah? Thanks in advance.... b. yes there is.cheap filter allow less light penetration. there will be issues of ghosting & flare. if you wanna use chepo filters for your expensive lens, might as well go naked. c. because some of those 'pros' are pixel peepers and they say filters will affect IQ(very true if you are using cheap filters, for expensive filters like B+W it is very negligible). d. not quite true. even the Sony Carl Zeiss lens are quite prone to flare, especially when shooting towards the sun. filters will help. edit: for very expensive filters, light penetration would be 99%, so it doesn't really affect the light gathering properties. You should compliment the designers of the buildings and pavement though I suspect that they are long gone. I just took the pic but thanks anyway. QUOTE(joejoe2004 @ Nov 4 2010, 11:47 AM) I would like to ask your personal experience in usage of filters like skyline, UVA/B, etc, etc. Forget about special effect filters like ND, Grey, polarizing, diffuser, etc, etc. a. Digital SLRs does not need UV or skyline filters anymore. Electronic sensors are not affected by UV and the slight color of skyline filters can be PPed into your shots. So UV filters are purely for protection purposes. Thanks in advance.... b. Cheap filters are prone to flaring and ghosting and some even add unwanted color cast to your pic. Some expensive filters have tank like build for protection and are less prone to flaring or ghosting. c. Anytime you add any filter to your lens you are decreasing the lens' IQ. You're adding another layer of glass to the front so at the very least, the amount of light transmission is going to decrease however minimal it may be. That's why some people don't use filters. d. It's true. Adding any filter to your lens will increase the chances of getting flare. More glass = more chances of light getting reflected or bounced or whatever off it. |

Quick question, the Alpha lens 50mm f1.4 cost RM1299, and the CZ 85mm f1.4 cost RM5999....both at f1.4 but the price so much difference? Does the quality justify the premium price for the CZ lens?
