so which one should be swap, and which one is root (/)
should partition C (XP) be swap?
1st of all, i recommand u go and take some tutorial about partition and file system.
if u really want to try linux, u must 1st throw away most of the thing u know in window. if u don't have any importance data in ur pc, and if u only had one hard disk, then i recommand u delete all partition in ur drive, as i know u just recently formatted ur XP right? ok, when u install XP, create one partition which u think suitable for ur XP, normally 20GB to 40GB is big enough, then after that, try to install Ubuntu with its live cd.
in the partitioning part, choose manually edit.
then, i recommand u create 3 partition.
1.)Root (/) with Ext3 Filesystem
2.)Home (/Home) with Ext3 Filesystem
3.)Swap (swap) with linux-swap
for the swap make it as a logical partition, primary is also ok.
Root(/) and Home (/home), can be large partition, home partition is to store ur file, root is then store the system file and program.
for the swap, if ur RAM is big enough like 1GB, then make it as 400Mb to 1Gb is enough.
then start ur installation, after that, ur system will be dual boot Linux and XP, if no error occur.
