*
What tool did you use to partition your hdd in the first place?
Is your Windows XP running on ntfs?

QUOTE(elfreakz @ Nov 6 2006, 10:43 AM)
(b) i dont understand how to create connection in ubuntu, im using cable/usb via phone as modem...
*
Well, i'm sure you need a driver for that.
Contact the manufacturer and see if they provide drivers for linux.

Try if the driver is included in Ubuntu, but chances are, slim.

Frankly speaking, I have never expected ubuntu to give such problem...

Hmm, have you tried to unhide the NTFS partition?
Just add a line in the grub.conf
So it will look something like this

CODE

title Windows XP Professional SP2
unhide (hd1,1)
root noverify(hd1,1)
makeactive
chainloader +1

Note: (hda,b)
a corresponds to the drive and b corresponds to the partition.
(hd1,1) means second hdd, second partition.

By the way, if you want to be more adventurous, you can always get into grub and run the commands line by line and end it with boot

cheers

swap in Linux is always called swap.
You just need to define a swap type partition with a fixed size for it.

It depends what tool are you planning to use to create the partition.
Can't really say which one is better.

Btw, have you tried to unhide the ntfs partition?

when installing xp, delete all partition in the disk, then create a partition for xp and left other space unpartition, then continue ur xp installation.

After that install ubuntu linux, in the partition part, edit manually, then ask it use the existing free space...

done!

swap is not "/" , swap is swap, "/" is the Root partition, an linux system must at least got two partition one is the swap, another is the "/", swap is like RAM, for linux temporary store file.

1st of all, i recommand u go and take some tutorial about partition and file system.

if u really want to try linux, u must 1st throw away most of the thing u know in window. if u don't have any importance data in ur pc, and if u only had one hard disk, then i recommand u delete all partition in ur drive, as i know u just recently formatted ur XP right? ok, when u install XP, create one partition which u think suitable for ur XP, normally 20GB to 40GB is big enough, then after that, try to install Ubuntu with its live cd.

in the partitioning part, choose manually edit.

then, i recommand u create 3 partition.

1.)Root (/) with Ext3 Filesystem
2.)Home (/Home) with Ext3 Filesystem
3.)Swap (swap) with linux-swap

for the swap make it as a logical partition, primary is also ok.

Root(/) and Home (/home), can be large partition, home partition is to store ur file, root is then store the system file and program.

for the swap, if ur RAM is big enough like 1GB, then make it as 400Mb to 1Gb is enough.

then start ur installation, after that, ur system will be dual boot Linux and XP, if no error occur.

After all, are you trying to install two O/S into a single HDD?
Making dual-boot?

Windows XP partition can never be swap.
Swap itself is a partition and it cannot be shared between Windows and Linux.

Are you confused or something? tongue.gif
