I just got myself the ubuntu 6.06.
This is my first time, however I had quickly encounted an error which I couldn't figure it out. I can surf the net with firefox, yet I can't do any update or whenever my system needs to download stuff from the internet. I'm using a proxy connection. This is my university setup for internet connection on pc http://www.ntu.edu.sg/CITS/Getting+Help/ge...er+settings.htm Below are some commands of my pc: QUOTE ipconfig » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « QUOTE iwconfig » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « QUOTE iwlist scan » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « QUOTE sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « QUOTE route » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « QUOTE sudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « QUOTE sudo lspci » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « QUOTE sudo lshw » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « This post has been edited by theodore_kh: Oct 23 2006, 12:56 AM |

Can you right click and download stuff with the web browser? If you can, then read on.
I dont have Ubuntu in front of me but look into the following: 1. Firewall 2. If you are using GNOME check the global proxy setting 3. Ask the network admin people if they restricted any downloading |

1. I didn't install any firewall, by default ubuntu don't come with firewall, right?
2. what is that? Is it system > preferences > network proxy ? Either manual configuration, direct connection or automatic proxy connection, my firefox still works properly. But still can't update ubuntu. 3. I dont think they did, since my windows xp works fine. |

The first thing you need to do on any Debian/Ubuntu is to :
sudo apt-get update so that the packages database will be updated and Ubuntu knows where to find it. |

Or can someone teach me how to configure my internet proxy connection?
At the system > preferences> network proxy That one I choose auto configure with http://www.ntu.edu.sg/proxy.pac What is that one anyway? Even if I choose direct connection or manual or even type the address wrongly in auto configuration, it doesn't affect my surfing internet and MSN. Seems like it doesn't function anyhow. and at the other at network settings under administration > network I choose DHCP, or whatever is it , only that my internet will work. If I choose static I totally can't connect to my university website at all. Inside the DNS it is auto configured for me ntu.edu.sg and the ip is 155.69.X.X. I already tried sudo apt-get update. But ubuntu can't detect the internet and cant update |

I missed the proxy part.
Since you are using proxy, wget (which used by apt) and any other means to connect ot outside world need to go through proxy. What you can do is set wget to use proxy by editing /home/your-username/.bashrc and add these lines (I'm not sure if it will work) : CODE http_proxy= http://www.ntu.edu.sg/proxy.pac HTTP_PROXY=$http_proxy export http_proxy HTTP_PROXY export ftp_proxy HTTP_PROXY You can add other transfer protocol which use bash/cli mode. Than you can try download things using wget. Example: wget http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf...-1plf4_i386.deb If you can download, then you are ready to apt-get. I you can't, maybe you need to adjust something on the proxy url. Try consult with your U on how to set manually the proxy. Update after doing some surfing on your U site: CODE http_proxy= http://proxy.ntu.edu.sg:8080 HTTP_PROXY=$http_proxy export http_proxy HTTP_PROXY export ftp_proxy HTTP_PROXY This post has been edited by oshiri: Oct 24 2006, 10:25 AM |

How come they say that I am not the owner of the account even I am only the single user ?
I log in with username oem and password.. I think i am a temporary user, because they wrote OEM (temporary user). I can download that wget. But they don't allow me to install it. ---------------------- nevermind. I fix it de. I done that by changing the root password and log in with root account This post has been edited by theodore_kh: Oct 24 2006, 12:23 PM |
