Always start with "ping" when trying to troubleshoot networking problem.

1. ping ip vista client - make sure vista does not blocking icmp
If you got reply, then there is no problem

2. ping vista hostname/netbios name
If you got reply and the ip comes back, then it is fine.
If you got ip which you does not recognized, then you could be behind router and you can't use hostname for samba.
If this is the case, you might want to try samba winbind.
http://mambang.org.my/modules/news/article...eywords=winbind

3. Try list samba shares using what anetwork suggested by using both ip and hostname. This will give you some clue if your samba configuration has problem or folder shares on vista has problem.
You can check your samba configuration using : testparm

if you scan the default repos, you'll see that TW repos are fast too. using TM broadband can achieve speed up to 60kbps during peak hours.

remember last time samba4 uninstalled ur samba2.3? its time for u to go back to 2.3, winbind seems to depend on samba-common. u can try sudo apt-get install samba

if that doesnt work, try change samba to samba-common

by the way, i didnt study computer science...i studied psychology

to edit things, or anything related to system change, remember to add sudo...e.g. sudo gedit /etc/nsswitch.conf

how sad looks like the blind leading the blind

by default u should not need to install anything else to access a samba share

on gnome, use the start menu -> connect to server

or command line #sudo mount -t cifs -o "username=xxx,password=yyy" //192.168.1.2/sharedfolder /mnt

hahaha u still hv lots to learn. for default start up, sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst (it's L, not 1), in tat file, u'll see a line with default (a number), now in that file look for your ubuntu's arrangement, if it's the 1st 1 means 0. e.g. default 0

press tab n it will list down whats in the folder, or tab for it to auto select file name that is most likely to your request. e.g. when u type /bo *press tab* it become /boot, hope u get the idea, experiment with it if u dont get the idea.
