QUOTE(scorps @ Sep 2 2008, 09:37 AM)
err.. no one can help me?? blink.gif
*
the problem is...pls rearrange ur sentence to give it more comprehensible smile.gif is it when ur in ubuntu u can see your winxp system, but when ur in ur winxp u cant see your ubuntu system?

EDIT: ok here goes my explaination, if im not mistaken ur question. 1st, u need to configure your ubuntu to join your winxp's workgroup, your ubuntu can view and join any winxp workgroup it can see but not vice versa, the stupid winxp just can view and transfer files from within the joined network!

SOLUTION: go to console in ubuntu and type in "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install samba" minus the " ".

b4 u edit your samba workgroup, go to your winxp system n check the workgroup/network your winxp is in. once u done that, do "sudo gedit /etc/smb.conf" in ubuntu console again and edit the samba configuration. under "# Global Parameters" there is a line call workgroup = WORKGROUP(edit this to the 1 that is same as your winxp's). save it once your done n exit gedit.

you can edit other lines as well if you want, there are many options there for u to mess with. b4 u wan2 mess with any of them, save a back up(e.g. from smb.conf save as smb.conf.bak) so when u screw it up, load the back up(sudo gedit /etc/smb.conf.bak) and save it as smb.conf.

after u done all those, do "sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart" so that samba read and apply the new setting without restarting your pc. thats all!

hope my instructions help!
cheers!

EDIT 2: sudo means switching to privilege account, like admin, without that rights, u cant edit a damn thing and error will come out. when you do sudo it will ask for your account password, its normal, just type in to verify your the user, this is for safety, to prevent hacker/virus to edit your system config n system files. like vista's UAC, just linux's less annoying haha

not, when i in ubuntu system, i cannot see winxp system,
but if using winxp system, it can view and transfer the file from ubuntu system...  icon_question.gif
*
still, try my solution 1st, there r lots of options in that conf file to change, find a line tat is "discoverable = no" change to yes, try it 1st. cause linux's network isnt as messy as winxp's, linux's just need to check the conf file for problems, winxp dont, u screw up means u screw up hahaha

ok i say again, when u use linux, google is your best friend.

if that dont works, let me know your wifi adapter brand n model...n pls, when its about linux, be specific about your stuff, u guys should learn how to ask questions -.-" tats y u cnt find your answer...cause u asked a vague question!

dude..i know how to use google
i've searched in googled few days back and i found this
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=225206
but the problem i've stucked at step 3
CODE
sudo ndiswrapper -m

i got this message
CODE
sudo: ndiswrapper: command not found

futhermore the guide & driver attached is for 32bit version while i'm using 64bit ubuntu 8.04
i'm using linksys wusb54gsc version 1.0.. i also found out that driver for win 64bit was never released.  hmm.gif
*
u havent install ndiswrapper it seems...try to use apt-get/aptitude to install it rather than compile n make install, install it b4 any further steps, try the 32bit driver 1st, if it dont work only send in feedback to linksys tongue.gif

or just look at this site for much better explaination on how to install driver for your adapter http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=563547

that is much better than the 1 u posted

Added on September 3, 2008, 2:46 amknow how to use google n know how to use google right is different, y i can get stuff that you left out? dont just search according to what you wan2 know, sometimes when u hit a wall, search for things related to it, like chipset it use.

n since your using ubuntu, pls use apt-get more, rather than compile source yourself, it save u alot of troubles smile.gif

cheers! i've been with linux for over 10yrs, i know how frustrated it can be sometimes, but its also a good training for me to b more resourceful. linux teach u how to be tech savvy rather than tech retards thats rely on spoon fed information

If you follow my previous post on how to manually mount samba shares you should see everything shared in xp.
Just point nautilus to your samba mount point.

You can't see files automatically in nautilus is caused by bug in ubuntu gnome vfs.
What you can try is purge gnome vfs and try reinstall it, probably your Ubuntu version has an update.
CODE
apt-get update
apt-get --purge remove gnome-vfs-extfs libgnomevfs2-common
apt-get install gnome-vfs-extfs libgnomevfs2-common

I doubt kernel module will work with apt. Yes you can get module source using apt, but no way binary module will be there. You need to compile it against your kernel headers. Since you've been using linux more than 10 years, you probably know it by now.
I don't mind spoon feeding others as long they understand it at the end.
Cheers!! ... ops puasa.
*
i mean install ndiswrapper if u know what i meant, its used as wrapper for drivers that isnt suppose to be for linux. i know what i'm talking about, perhaps u need to understand my statement before u starts to shoot

wrong info when spoon feding only will give them more question marks, do not act smart my friend, cheers! i did not encounter the bug u mentioned on newer 8.04 ubuntu tho

Added on September 3, 2008, 9:40 amo and 1 more thing, kernel module do works with apt, if it doesnt, u wouldnt able to update kernel through apt-get, so pls...think b4 shoot, apt-get is the software manager, it install stuff through script, deb archive r good enough for all installation, it can also just download the source n compile it for your machines if thats the instruction for that particular deb file.

if u did carefully read their post, u'd know what's the conversation between me n arafat, he follows the forum he got, n in it it's instruction is to install ndiswrapper through compile, thats y i said use apt-get to install it rather than compile n install it.

you can doubt my credibility, but pls dont show your ego on trying to shoot some1 down just because u know something, others might have knowledge that you thought he/she dont know.

QUOTE(oshiri @ Sep 3 2008, 09:41 AM)
Yes I understand it correctly. And I'm sure I was talking about ndiswrapper.
Ndiswrapper tool ( userland ) will not work without ndiswrapper kernel modules !!!!
Remember "modprobe ndiswrapper" ?

CODE
$ modinfo ndiswrapper
filename:       /lib/modules/2.6.26-oshirix-wanted/misc/ndiswrapper.ko
author:         ndiswrapper team <ndiswrapper-general@lists.sourceforge.net>
description:    NDIS wrapper driver
version:        1.53
license:        GPL
vermagic:       2.6.26-oshirix-wanted SMP preempt mod_unload modversions 586
depends:        usbcore
srcversion:     876B497D6997CD8A626EA6F
parm:           utils_version:Compatible version of utils (read only: 1.9) (charp)
parm:           hangcheck_interval:The interval, in seconds, for checking if driver is hung. (default: 0) (int)
parm:           debug:debug level (int)
parm:           proc_gid:The gid of the files created in /proc (default: 0). (int)
parm:           proc_uid:The uid of the files created in /proc (default: 0). (int)
parm:           if_name:Network interface name or template (default: wlan%d) (charp)

That is why you need to compile ndiswrapper against your kernel headers.
Hey .. I'm trying to teach you something here ... not to insult you.
*
u still dont get the whole picture...fine, let me explain, he follows instruction from another site, n his stuck in 1 of the steps with error, i just give him a hand bro! sigh...pls dont just understand 1 thing without looking at whole picture la -.-"

Added on September 3, 2008, 9:53 amanother thing is, ndiswrapper works fine when u install it through apt-get, it's there, so y lead new user into more work when there is an easier road for them?

his stuck at sudo ndiswrapper -m with error sudo: ndiswrapper: command not found

another road is to use sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper-common ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 && sudo depmod -a && sudo modprobe ndiswrapper, then echo 'ndiswrapper' | sudo tee -a /etc/modules and finally sudo ndiswrapper -m...

Added on September 3, 2008, 10:22 ami have no intention to argue, im just here to help. v both know how linux progress since the last dacade, v used to compile from scratch for installation of software or os! tat was fun, but im not sure about current user find them fun to play with, thats y software managers r around, to give users ease of use. i only suggest compilation when apt dont get the job done.

QUOTE(light bulb @ Sep 3 2008, 05:20 PM)
Hi question guys, is there any difference between the nvidia driver in nvidia site and the driver readily provided in ubuntu disc? Like if it handles 3d more efficiently than the default? I'm asking this because I tried playing a 3d shooting game for linux but it lags a lot (and the graphic is nowhere near up to today's standard). I'm pretty sure if the game's ported to winxp I'd have high fps.
*
nvidia driver provided in ubuntu cd is for 2d only, it's nvidia's open source driver, to enable 3d, just install it. to install, there should have a notification in your tray regarding restricted drivers, it will auto download n install, after that a reboot will do.

if your reading this message from your linux's monitor, means the display driver is installed, so as your mb's driver, simple as that, no place to get lost in

QUOTE(cool_redant @ Sep 6 2008, 12:32 AM)
Guy,

I'm having Hardy Heron 8.04 on my lappy for about a month now. I've been working with twinview without a problem until now. I manage to install few games(termoulous+nexuiz) and update all packages, my PC is not getting stable, but usually i can over come by log-off and login again. Unstable I mean is when I went to jango.com, sound works fine, but after i close jango and start to play games, the sound did came out. I've to re-login again to get the sound. My deluge also sometimes doesnt finish its job and I've to start over again.

Few question I need to ask here. Is updating my packages to the latest is a bad idea? Do i've to check on something before I install/update?
*
latest as in u did not added any additional repository? if thats the case, its advice to update to latest, but if u added development repo, better becareful with what your doing. what kind of sound card your using? i think its the problem with pulseaudio, try to manually set it in sound server, to pulseaudio, rather than alsa (note: alsa in 8.04 is just a proxy for pulseaudio, which doesnt works very well..buggy)
